Well OK it's about someone touching a line but it wasn't Raul's teams line. Not nearly the misleading promo I figured it would be. But it wasn't really an accusation, it was more a matter of fact . . . and a perfect example of why you should know the rules.

I think the best way to look at this show is as a game show, and not necessarily a golf competition. In other words, I don't think this show was constructed to necessarily find the best golfers of the bunch, but more for (obviously) entertainment purposes, and to find the team who can best deal with all the elements of the competition... those being golf, navigation, speed and dare I say, luck.

I would agree with that... luck will certainly play a role. it is for that very reason that I like BB better than HW18... and even BB has a lot to do with luck.

Hey everyone.
Had a great chat with Ashley and Ashleigh tonight after the show. I'll add the other contestants interviews to the blog post tomorrow and Thursday as well.

I'm looking forward to hearing from Jay on his dad's faux pas and Raul on his "call" of the infraction. Also, Andy and Parker looked like they might "get into it" this week, so I'm looking forward to those southern gents' interviews as well.

I'll talk to Charlotte about dodging yet another bullet this week - she and Rob must have horseshoes stashed somewhere ;)

This is fun! ;)

Big Break is certainly more "real golf" based, but Highway 18 is

I wouldn't say that, Big Break is a damn good show. Nailbiters, playoffs, you can only try to guess week to week who won't make the cut...but of course, with Highway 18 you try to guess week to week if there will be a cut. I would never miss an episode - you miss a lot. I missed Highway 18 last week and everything was the same: Jay screaming at Peach, the Ashes dropping a few more dumb blonde moments, everyone quivering a lot but no one disappearing, and silly little pseudo-golf challenges.

In a week like this, if there's a prize for the winner but no loss for the loser, you get moments like Rob/Charlotte and Ashley/Ashleigh putting around in no real hurry, since they know they lost. It's an opinion, I'm just saying the show doesn't seem to be much of a competition. Maybe it'll pick up speed. I miss Ka'anapali.

What Peach did was wrong... no doubt about it. But Raul lost any kind of respect crying to the judges.

"Beat me but don't cheat me"......pla-ease.....I was laughing at that hard. He did seem to be a little beotch about how he handled it. Don't get me wrong....he called a correct penalty....it's just how he did it that made me laugh.

I was surprised that Jay accepted the violation without issue. I wasn't sure what behaviour to expect from his ill-tempered brattish self. He probably gave Peach a hard time later....as is his normal. It's obvious to me that Jay wasn't disciplined as a child. I'd love nothing more than to see Peach dress him down a time or too. I shouldn't expect too much from a man that wears his socks like Peach does...... I hope that the Eastern NC fellas stick around 'till the end. I was born and raised about 25 miles from their hometown. I've played their home course, Lanetree, many...many times (first bentgrass greens I've ever played). They remind me of home and the guys that I went to college with!!!!! I hope that Ashleigh and Ashley stick around, too. They are a riot. I'd love it if they would outplay Peach and Jay and eliminate them!!!!!

I didn't mind that he called the penalty. Hey, that's golf and those are the rules.

But the high-five after the rules official announced that Jay and Peach lost the hole because of the infraction? Complete lack of class. You high-five after you win, not because someone else lost. Yippee! I called a penalty and they lost. And then to follow that with the "beat me don't cheat me" comment. Give me a break. The penalty may be the same (in this case, loss of hole), but there is a vast difference between a rule infraction and "cheating." Cheating implies an intent to deceive, and I don't think anyone would say that Peach intended to deceive or gain an unfair advantage. He eff'd up, plain and simple. Don't rub it in. That kind of behavior will always come back to bite you in the arse. Karma's a b!tch. I suspect that some of the animosity goes back to the challenge where Raul and Jameica got to choose holes for the players, and Jay and Peach birdied the hardest hole. Jameica made the "was that a little 'tude". Uh, yes. You gave them the hardest hole, basically telling them that you hoped they would get a strike, and then they birdied it. Damn right they were giving you attitude. I would have too, and so would you. Again, it's the difference between celebrating a win, and cheering someone else's loss. Lost all respect for Raul and Jameica after that. Hope they get eliminated in the first show after they are no longer immune. Aside from this incident, neither one of them has any personality whatsoever. They are by far the least interesting of all of the teams. Things I did like:
  • Jay and Peach conceding a putt to one of the Ashes in match play.
  • Parker's comment "I'm so hungry I would eat my own hand if I could regurgitate it and use it later." (The NC boys said something else really funny, but now I can't remember what it was.)
What was up with Keri Murphy's awkward interview of Ashley ("So, what's the plan here?") in the middle of a match play hole?

I was thinking the same thing when Jay accepted the violation with no argument, then I got to thinking later, I wonder if it would have been different if Jay had been the one accused? I bet he would have fought tooth and nail against it. It's almost as if he had the attitude of, "oh well, that's just Dad messing up again."

I agree that Raul's handling of the situation both during and after was a little off-putting. I think after Peach missed his putt and they were obviously going to tie and have to replay the hole, I would have just let it go. But then again, I've never played for the kind of money they're playing for, so I might have done exactly the same thing as Raul.

Things I did like:

I thought it was funny that Jay was saying, "That's good to me, can I do that, are we allowed to do that, can I give them that putt?"

This competition is obviously confusing everyone so much that they don't know if they're still playing by the normal rules of golf or if anything they say or do is going to cause some strange new twist in the game.

Things I did like:

I liked that one of the girls pulled the pin for Rob to putt in the chip and putt challenge. Only time I saw that happen during the whole challenge. Gave me a little more respect for them than I had before (they may be kinda cute but I really didn't like them as a team).

Of course it wasn't Raul's team's line. That wouldn't be a penalty (just a breach of etiquette or something).

What Peach did was wrong... no doubt about it. But Raul lost any kind of respect crying to the judges.

I don't really see it that way. How else should he have handled it? In a deeper voice? All he said was "he touched his line" a few times, right? I'm not a fan of either of the teams affected, but I stand by Raul on that decision. It's not "crying" to the judges - it's enforcing the rules of golf, something you're

obligated to do. Would it have been crying if he had called the same penalty on himself? No.
He did seem to be a little beotch about how he handled it.

Guess I'm in the minority here. I don't think he sounded "bad" at all.

But the high-five after the rules official announced that Jay and Peach lost the hole because of the infraction? Complete lack of class.

I agree with that. Totally lame. Nobody wants to win because the opponents cheat, particularly when they don't really display a whole lot of intent to cheat.

there is a vast difference between a rule infraction and "cheating."

True

What was up with Keri Murphy's awkward interview of Ashley ("So, what's the plan here?") in the middle of a match play hole?

You got me there. She looked totally out of place on the golf course itself.

I liked that one of the girls pulled the pin for Rob to putt in the chip and putt challenge.

It only makes sense for them to be doing that for each other so the one could putt. After all, they were just holding each other up at that point. I'd have voted for taking the flag out entirely if you could at all see the hole, and by that point, maybe not even then because they have to know where to land the ball by then.

Well, yeah but if you go a step further, they should ALL have been doing that because they were ALL holding each other up at ANY and EVERY point. I brought it up because of WHO did it, not that it was done. Since no one could go when another team was going, this should have been done the whole time, not just when it was down to the last two teams. No one else did it, just the girls, which was the whole point of the post.

The girls are the only ones we saw do it, and just the one time. That doesn't mean no one else did it. On the same subject, I can't believe there wasn't a rule against that, seeing as how they have gone to the trouble in the series to make them have to finish out holes and make sure the attempted chip stops rolling before they can pick the ball up and those kinds of things.

See my original post on that subject:

Didn't figure I needed to repeat exactly what I just said.

OK, I guess I shoulda said "I didn't see anyone else do it, just the girls . . ."

Were there times the chips didn't finish rolling? I missed that, but I figured since they had to do it in two shots was why they didn't have to finish putting out. Totally missed them picking up the balls while still in motion.

    • Day 126: 5/1/24 Putting and chipping practice. Slow motion swings with 8-iron.
    • #4 - 1st hole at Kingsbarns I rolled in a 15 footer for birdie. Showed my caddie an old guy could still play a bit. #3 - 18th hole at Basin Harbor Club, Vergennes, VT. I had played matches against my nephew over the years. He had never beaten me although through the years he had become a long hitting teenage golfer. I was 1 up but bunkered near the 18th green. My nephew had a long putt for birdie. I splashed out of the bunker to 4 feet. He rolled his first putt close and I gave him the par. Sadly for him, I rolled mine in and won our last match. He went off to college and then Europe for a Ph. D. It was our last match. Family champion forever. #2 - First playoff hole in the City of Livonia, MI “65 & Over” division. I rolled in an 8 footer that broke about 4-5 inches. #10 Whispering Willows GC. #1  18th hole at TPC Prestancia, Sarasota, FL. A 4 foot slicing putt for par to beat the prior year’s Member/Guest winners and win the Member/Guest with my father at his club. I was having heart palpitations as I played the final hole solo when my father put two in the water. There was never a better golf sight for me when that ball dove into the hole.
    • Finally, wedges getting somewhere. This one a punch gap from 87 yards to about 12 feet. Contact and ball flight absolute restaurant quality. It's nice when grass comes back.
    • Tiger on the Today show today. At 3:25 he says he's working on keeping his arms in more and rotating his hips better. Nice.
    • Day 11- Slow,  short swings with short practice club.
