    • most of the time, but he plays to the public sometimes...

    • he's full of it - taking advantage of the media !

I know we all love him for that (including me), but today, while watching the "Daly's comeback year" show I started thinking - what if he's smart enough to recognize it why people are behind him, and now, it's more act than "real" ? One ad for his new show especially made me think:
(announcer) : "Daly on practice rounds"
(John) : "Practice rounds sucks!"
that smerk on his face was kind of saying "that's what you wanted to hear, right? so here you have it"... wonder what you guys (and gals) think ...

I say JD is 100% JD. If he was as calculating as you seem to imply, I can't fathom why he would have done half of the self-destructive things he has done. The guy is probably lucky to be alive.

I'm not all that big a Daly fan, actually. I am certainly not one of those people who stare transfixed waiting for the next train wreck.

I hope he eventually dies peacefully in bed of old age. By that, I mean something over 48.

From what I've seen and heard about him, what you see and hear is what you get. Like a lot of people I'm sure he hams it up a little extra more for his own amusement rather than those watching.

I would say he is about 80% real and 20% act. I definitely think he knows how to get the public going, but like LarryK stated, he wouldn't self-destruct so much if he wasn't being real.

I'm not a fan of John Daly. I never really have been. He is one of the best golfers in the world when he is on his game, but then again, a lot of golfers can say the same when they are on their respective games. It's just a pity that so much talent has gone to waste because of so many bad personal decisions.

At least he gave us the 91 PGA Championship and 95 British Open though.

People see through an act pretty quickly. I think Joh is for real. If he was worried about popularity he'd attend the British Open winner's dinner instead of catnapping through it.

John is 100% real. I can't recall one time where he did anything that made me think he was trying to play to the media. John is John, and he doesn't care whether you like him or not. Follow him around on a practice round if you ever get the chance. It was one of the best days I've ever had. The guy is a genuine.

I don't think he's hamming it up for the camera in that instance. This is the guy, who during his Playing Lessons from the Pros, wore jeans. But I don't think he can seriously think practice rounds "suck." I'm sure he understands some benefit to them. I'd imagine there is a little more context to that quote that the Golf Channel edited.

On a side note, I love the new Winn commercial with him and Butch Harmon. Butch has a ball teed up on the range, John comes walking over, straight to Butch's spot, knocks the ball off the tee, than pushes him out of the way. I was cracking up for a good minute after seeing that for the first time. Winn grips are still lame though.

The best is the last comment by Butch - when Daly tells him that his differnt from Butch beacuse of distance and Butch responds "but I can make a 3 footer"... ICE COLD

Yeah, I cringed when I heard that. That's messed up. But funny!

However - it's a copy cat of the Nike Commercial from about a year ago, where all the Nike players sneaked into Tiger's garage and Duval pulled out the Ignite from the bag and smashed the windshield of Tiger's Buick on the backswing - Frankie (Tiger's headcover) yelled " The best swing you made whole year Duval !"

It's good to see that the "Big Guys" have enough sense of humor to make fun of themselfs

He strikes me as one of the few genuine people on tour. He has already been through so many bad times while being in the public eye that he doesn't really have any reason to hide anything else. On a side note, His show might be one of the few interesting things that the Golf Channel has had in a long time, The Big Break IV was the worst thing on TV since 'Joanie Loves Chachi.'

Come on guys. John Daly is a ham now that he's got a t.v. show. It's funny how people act when they know the cameras are rolling.

I don't think I want to know about the Stacy-meter.

And people wonder why I don't think John should be chosen (if he doesn't qualify) for the Ryder Cup.

Here :
These are tough times for John Daly, with his wife being hauled off to prison and all, but that doesn't justify his acting like a punk on the golf course. At the FBR Open, Daly called in sick for Wednesday's pro-am, shot a 74 on Thursday and then a 40 on his first nine on Friday, at which point he walked directly to his car and left without telling a soul. Last year Daly spent the Tuesday before the FBR rocking out at a pre-Super Bowl event before jetting to town at the 11th hour, only to shoot 81 in the opening round, then WD. Daly should simply leave Scottsdale off his 2007 schedule. The dozens of players who failed to make it into the tournament would've coveted the opportunity....

    • Yeah, I agree that some of the charts are hard to make sense of. That short game chart is showing how often a short game shot ends up within a certain distance. The orange bar is all shots, the green bar is for shots within 25 yards, and the blue bar is for shots between 25 and 50 yards. I just play around with all of it and will figure it out. I would suggest just diving in and see what jumps out and work on that.
    • PGA Tour players weight shift to their lead foot way sooner and to a higher % than amateur. I would say it is something like close to 90% lead foot at impact for PGA Tour player. For Amateurs it could be under 50%. You need to get the weight transfer over more and sooner. You can't rely on the feeling of finishing on the lead foot as validation you did so.
    • Just because it's a small league at a county course doesn't mean their couldn't be a small group of people who take on the role/responsibility of ensuring the rules are properly enforced and being the rules committee for your league   That's the whole point of GUR. It's a temporary thing. Also like I mentioned before, since you're playing on the same course it's highly likely this isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened to a bunker on this course.   There's nothing that needs changed though. There is the rule for how the situation is supposed to be handled as well as an alternative for how it could have been handled differently via a committee. Just because your league chooses not to have a committee doesn't mean the rules of golf need changed for everyone.   Absurd logic. You and your opponent can't just agree on rules and make things up as you go. If it's just a 1v1 match for fun, sure do whatever you want. In an actual league with other competitors, no shot. Everyone needs to play by the same rules. How would you feel if someone else in the league took a casual drop on a different hole and their playing partner agreed with it but you didn't agree with it and you found out about it later?
    • I suggest you actually read some of the Rules, either online or on the USGA (or R&A) phone app.  Here's the Definition of Committee: You have a small league, whoever is in charge of that league is the Committee.  This would be the same person (group) who might decide that you should play Lift Clean and Place (Modal Local Rule E-3), to institute the "leaf rule", (MLR F-14), or that you should move a ball out of aerification holes (MLR E-4).
    • Website. And yeah I was asking about the specifics within those sections under the performance tab. I guess the strokes gained by distance like you noted is probably a good place to start. This would indicate that my wedges need practice, which I figured as much so I'm not surprised by that   Some of the other ones specifically around the short game I struggle to make sense of what it actually means. Like I know this chart is measuring the percentage of the time that I get the ball within certain proximity ranges but I don't know from a quick glance at this where I need to improve.   But then again I guess these two would seem to indicate that it's chipping inside 25yds from the rough that has the most room for improvement? Does it seem like I'm interpreting that right?
