I'm not saying I don't love Caddyshack, but I do think it's slightly overrated.

I think its value is the cult like status it has with golfers, all the great one-liners, and the comedy. Sure it lacks the personal diversity aspect that seems to be the common thread of the great sports movies, but it reminds me that golf can be fun.

'Tin Cup' is quite good fun and did I enjoy 'The Greatest Game Ever Played'.

Haven't seen 'Caddyshack' in a long time, probably should bearing in mind it's cult status.

Follow the Sun was a decent historical perspective of Hogan, although from what I've read it wasn't an accurate portrayal of the personality of Hogan himself.

True. That's because Hogan controlled the way he was portrayed. And by many accounts, he wasn't always the gentleman he wanted people to think he was. Ask Arnold Palmer.

Dead Solid Perfect is my vote

I know I've mentioned it before, but I will try again. Does anyone know where I can rent, download, whatever (short of paying $25 or more for an old VHS copy - I don't even have a VCR anymore) "Dead Solid Perfect"?

I agree.

But I also agree with this ^^^.

I think Tin Cup would be my favorite. Happy Gilmore is right up there too (and I don't even really like Sandler movies.) As for "The Greatest Game Ever Played", I found it virtually unwatchable after having read the book. It was very frustrating how the history was altered, omitted, condensed, etc. I know that's commonplace when converting books into movies, but I found it particularly annoying in this case. Huge chunks of time that I thought were integral to the plot were simply ignored when I felt they could have been included without derailing the entertainment value of the movie. So, if you've only seen the movie . . . pick up the book. It's not an easy read, but it's well worth it.

it's a small list to choose from:

Bobby Jones, Stroke of Genius Caddyshack Caddyshack II Dead Solid Perfect Gentleman's Game, A Greatest Game Ever Played, The Happy Gilmore Legend of Bagger Vance, The Miracle on the 17th Green Pat and Mike Tin Cup Who's Your Caddy?

They left off " The Foursome " (2006). Sooooooooooo bad. I was up late one evening after some night putting and I couldn't sleep, so I watched the.whole.thing. Really terrible. The dialogue, the location, the weather, the subject matter.

I didn't care that much for Bagger Vance. Caddyshack is the easy choice here.

Dead Solid Perfect is great as it gives a good idea of what it's like to play golf professionally and is just a good story overall. The scene where Quaid goes nuts on his wife after she tells him she saw a beautiful deer come out of the mountains is so dead on and hilarious.

Tin Cup was decent.

Loved The Greatest Game Ever Played. And Follow the Sun is a sentimental favorite of mine.

I saw one on the Golf Channel once, I can't remember the name though (something along the lines of A gentlemens Game, but I know it's wrong.)

I really liked this movie.

The thing with sports movies, for me anyways, is the athletic acting ability of the actors. Has anyone ever see Anthony Perkins in "Fear Strikes Out: The Jim Piersall Story?" Don’t suspend disbelief! This touching story of a nervous breakdown in Beantown is ruined by an actor barely qualified to swing a purse.
But I digress… best golfing movie.
I think Danny Noonan had a pretty good swing for an Irish Catholic caddy – that circa 70’s swing with the Persimmon woods made "Caddyshack" more than a scatological comedy – best movie for quotes - “Spaulding get your foot off the boat.”
I agree with the above mention post: "The Foursome" is as about as awkward as an actual class reunion itself. "Caddyshack II" is an act of cruelty which, I think, necessitates a personal apology from both the Director and Producer.
"Tin Cup" is the best sentimental golf movie – good abbreviated swing which is… the best way to play through the winds of west Texas.
I would have to say, Kenny Lee, the guy Quaid played in "Dead Solid Perfect," is probably the best golfer in the golf movie genre, which in turn, makes the story a lot more believable and interesting – so I would say the best movie to portray the life of a fringe touring pro… but the book is probably better.

Hey, about 6 months ago I bought Dead Solid Perfect on VHS (after it being recommended on here by a previous "Best Golf Movies" thread and mentioned in John Dalys biography as his fav movie EVER!!!). I don't have a VHS player anymore so got a friend to convert it to .avi (perfect copy, about 700 MB). Anyway, if you want a copy I can burn the .avi to a CD and post it to you if you want (no charge of course)... Mods, dunno if that's allowed, if not please delete this post... Red.

I do like the movie but I do have the same problem as you with the misleading facts and even the outcome. I think Ouimet really won the playoff by five and the movie portrays that he won by one shot???? And the worst part is it says it is a true story in the begining. I guess that's just Hollywood trying to make a great story better but ruining it in the process.

Caddyshack is the best golf movie ever, period. - "In order to conquer the animal, I have to learn to think like an animal. And, whenever possible, to look like one. I've gotta get inside this guy's pelt and crawl around for a few days"

We had a gopher in our back yard a while back that I could not catch - and trust me my wife got REALLY tired of me quoting Carl Spackler daily.

I really liked tin cup - the last scene where he hits like 10 balls into the water, I am so there almost every time I play :) I make sure I bring a lot of balls for this one hole at my local course because constantly try to hit over the water. It's not some 350 yard drive, but it's long enough that when I do make it, it's a great day no matter what my score.

Happy Gilmore was just ok, had some funny stuff in it (the hole is your home, go to your home) but will never be the classic that caddyshack is - mainly because caddyshack had so many great actors in it. I mean come on, Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Bill Murry - Adam Sandler isn't in the same league. He is funny, but pretty much does the same routine in almost all his movies.

Finally, I know this was not a golf movie, but the golf scenes in the movie Starsky and Hutch with Snoop Dogg were hilarious. - best quote "You know a lot about golf" - "I know even more about grass" I don't doubt that.

I have not seen all of the movies some people mentioned, so this is just my $0.02.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
