Just because he is an 18 handicap also doesn't mean that he can't hit them. There can be other points in his game that are lacking, but iron play might be good.

Yes, I agree that his iron play could be good, but other points of the game might be lacking. However, at an 18 I would guarantee that there is some poor iron play happening. Just like in my rounds as a 10.....

Hitting your woods off the deck has a minimal effect on your handicap. How often do you hit a FW wood off the deck during a round? 3 maybe 4 times.

Umm I have to hit my 3W almost every hole, at least more then 3-4 times. I play courses that don't have a lot of Par 3's and I don't hit my driver that far. My drives average anywhere from 200 (if I top the ball) to 250 if I hit it solid. I might be able to hit it farther but that is rare. Either way I have to hit my 3W a lot. A lot of times I end up topping the ball and it goes maybe 20 yards. I walk up to the ball and attempt a better swing in order to practice. Sometimes I will top it again and sometimes I will get a clean hit. So yes, it adds a lot of strokes to my round.

Honestly, this is what lead me to taking the woods OUT of my bag, and replacing them with the hybrid. Sure, I give up a couple dozen yards, but the confidence and consistancy I gain is definitely worth it. If I hit a bad tee shot (getting rarer, but they happen) the last thing I want to do is follow it up with a crappy FW shot off the grass.

OH MAN!!! I have that same putter! It's an old Ray Cook model, right? That's funny you have the same one. Mine looks in the exact same shape as well. I've never come across someone else who had the same putter.

I've had mine for probably 15 or so years now and constantly get made fun of for it on the course nowadays with all the new style putters out there.

  • 2 months later...

I finally got around to snapping some pics for a WITB. It's cloudy out and the lighting is poor but you get the general idea.

As indicated in my signature, my bag contains the following...

Driver: Callaway 9.5' FT-5 Tour N I-Mix w/Diamana WB 73 S
Fairway Woods: Titleist 13' or 18' 909F3 D3 w/Matrix Ozik Code 8 S

The driver is a stock I-Mix FT-5 with a Diamana WB 73. This will likely be replaced sometime in 2010 w/the new FT Tour (if the FT Tour proves to be a worthy upgrade anyway) or another "smaller" driver (never have been a huge fan of the 460cc heads).

The fairway woods have both been custom built starting with stock clubs from Titleist. Shafts have been spine aligned and play just a tad stiffer than "stock S-flex". The swingweights are set to D3 (4g of hot melt added to 18' for swingweight adjustment). The 18' fairway wood is my 15th club so it shares time in the bag booting either the 13' fairway wood or 3-iron depending on course, conditions, etc.

All of my woods are gripped with Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cords.

Irons/Wedges: Scratch TD SB-1 3-PW D/S D2/D3, 52' SND D4, 56' SFU D5 & 60' EGG D6 w/S300

My SB-1's were also custom built. Shafts in all irons and wedges have been spine aligned and are Dynamic Gold S300's playing true to flex. 3-9 irons swing at D2, the PW comes in at D3.

My wedges are also Scratch, this time from the Tour Department. Lofts, grinds and swingweights are indicated above. Later I spine aligned the shafts and adjusted the swingweights to my preference after coming from the Scratch Tour Department lighter than ordered (I ordered them as D4, D5, D6 and they showed up D2, D4, D4).

All of my irons/wedges are also gripped with Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cords.

Putter: Scotty Cameron 33" Studio Select Newport

My putter is an OTR Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport at 33" w/the red cord grip. Factory Scotty headcover has been swapped in favor of an Odyssey headcover since I really didn't like the added bulk or velcro found on the Scotty headcover.

I have two of these putters, one stays in the bag the other stays at home for practice around the house. The "gamer" is pictured below.

I love this putter but the graphics and extensive stamping annoy me to a point. As you could likely tell from the rest of my set, I like simple and clean. A more "traditional" satin chrome is just fine by me and I don't want or need a lot of stamping and graphics. Due to that rather small annoyance, I'll likely have a custom SSB made to duplicate my Cameron in form and (hopefully) function. Of course, if I do this, it will be clean w/very few markings. For now however, the Cameron sinks enough puts to stay in the bag despite the minor annoyance.

Well, that's my bag for the start of 2010.

I wish that I could, it's -8' outside right now.

I got them all pretty well cleaned up for the pics (except for the woods, oh well). The face pic of the 6-iron was taken when new which is why that looks the way that it does.

    • One thing I've noticed with Mini Drivers is that the manufacturers seem like they keep their quantities somewhat limited.  The last two TaylorMade Mini's and the Callaway AI Smoke Mini were sold out quickly.
    • Huh? That's the niche of these mini-drivers. They can still work off the tee and off the fairway. They're designed for and work for both things, which is all that blurb says. You can see from the photos that it's a bit of a deeper face, which I find is more important off the tee than the fairway.
    • This statement doesn't make much sense to me.  So, I think the push and pull between a 3-wood meant for off the turf versus off the tee is how tall the face is on the 3-wood. I do not get how this mini driver would be good off the turf, or at least get the height needed to stop the ball as a normal 3-wood meant for off the ground. Maybe they care more about hitting the 3-wood off the tee versus off the turf. Nearly every strike would be low on the clubface relative to the CG location.  I would take that statement as more as marketing over what you would actually expect the club to perform.
    • No, not that Minnie Driver. This one: It's a mini driver from Titleist, available for Tour validation/testing starting this week at Kapalua. It's available in righty and lefty and is only in 13° models for now. GT280 is a direct result of Titleist’s collaboration with PGA TOUR players on the development and testing of the TSR 2W prototype, which debuted on TOUR at last year’s PLAYERS Championship. With many players seeking an additional option at the top end of their setup, Titleist tour reps and R&D engineers worked with players such as Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris to dial in a 13-degree head that worked as a go-to club off the tee and off the deck. Now on Tour: New Titleist GT280 The arrival of the 2025 PGA TOUR season this week in Maui brings with it an addition to Titleist’s breakthrough line of GT metalwoods: the new Titleist GT280.
