Ok i recently got into the golf game. I have played a local par 3 course several times actually every friday for the past couple months. But i have only played a full course just once due to the fact that i dont have a playing partner. Id rather not play alone. And i prefer to play durring the week rather than the weekend. This is where you guys come in, if any of you live around so cal preferablly in the valley let me know i would like to get together for a couple rounds. Thanks

If I still lived in SoCal I'd definitely play. I miss the weather over there and playing year round. Golf season is almost over here in PA. Sigh.

I'm in Pasadena and might occasionally be up for a round. Weekday afternoons are occasionally possible, but I'm on a pretty tight budget so I usually try to hit twilight right at the start. Probably won't be able to playfor the next couple weeks, though, as I've got some family coming in town and I should do some actual work for a little bit.

My office is in Tarzana. Its pretty hectic at work, but maybe in a couple of weeks we can meet at Woodley or Balboa or something. Dont be afraid to play alone at these places, people do all of the time.

Seconded. I used to play Woodley and Balboa alone all the time. I still do sometimes.

Brookside #1 is a

fantastic golf course. A great gem right there in Pasadena.

I've been meaning to try Brookside, but it's a bit expensive for my usual game. I usually play Altadena or Alhambra, which are both well under $20 if you catch twilight. They're both pretty easy as well, and since they still challenge me, I'm thinking I should practice a little more before I start thinking about more difficult courses.

(Although, oddly, my scores don't usually go up much on the few harder places I've played... I think that's because a chunked iron counts 1 stroke on any course, and my game is all right when I actually hit cleanly....)

If you're playing Alta Dena, consider Eaton Canyon as well. It's also nine holes, not very expensive, very walkable (if that's your thing), and isn't terribly flat. I also remember it being very well kept. It's also one of the few courses on which I made a birdie my first time out, so it's special to me. I also really like its driving range, but I don't remember the other courses' ranges, so they might be nice too.

Dang I wish I could spend more time in Pasadena.

Ah, yeah, I almost mentioned Eaton Canyon -- I played up there a few times when I first got out here in 2004. Didn't realize that Altadena was right up the road from me back then. Now I rarely wander the extra couple miles to Eaton. I should get out there for variety though... Don't know if it's always been this way, but it's under the same management as Altadena and IIRC plays very similarly as far as overall difficulty.

They're both nice because they have turf driving ranges (at least during "summer," which is still going on. I've never been there when it was sufficiently "winter" that they brought out the mats).

Really! They're two of the three turf ranges I know about in the Los Angeles area. After my recent fears of picking with my irons, I've started avoiding mats. Kind of weird to see, given how many 18 and 36 hole courses have mats, that two nine hole courses have turf. Still, it's great to see.

Wow, spurred by your post, I just played Eaton Canyon for the first time since 2004. It's a lot different than I remembered. I think it might have been a drought year when I was there before, because i remembered it being in really poor shape. It was in far better condition and it's a much more interesting course than Altadena. I'm going to have to get up there more often!

The grass ranges are great, I just wish they had a chipping green with a proper green. They've just got flags in short range grass, so you can't even approximately practice pitching with roll since the ball just bounces to a stop regardless of spin. Oh well...

  • 2 weeks later...
The first few years I played the game I played mostly at Van Nuys Executive and Par-3 course ,and at Studio City Golf. I decided I needed to get to the point I could shoot between E & +4, or so, on those courses before regularly taking on big courses. It paid off for me.

My short game got really solid and when I went to the longer courses, all I had to do was get off the tee okay. I knew I could get the ball in the hole in 2-3 strokes from <200 yards so there was not the intimidation or frustration factor when I faced longer holes.

I play around the valley every weekend, mostly as a single. Anytime you feel froggy...

    • Some of the tee shot data they showed was wildly incorrect too, specifically apex height There were multiple drives that they claimed had apex heights of like 35 feet yet they still carried 300yds. I wonder if that was the apex height when it reached the screen, not the calculated apex height.  I do agree that more data and even being able to hear/see which clubs the players select would be nice. They could easily do it by having someone looking in the bag and pressing a button for whichever club is missing from the player's bag as they're walking up to hit.
    • I was hoping to see the data on all the shots. Not just carry and total distance, but all of the stuff you see on a simulator. It should be on the TV screen like you see relevant data for a football game. A couple of the approach shots they didn't even state the distance to the pin. I think that would probably be something they add as time goes on as they get feedback. I was surprised the camera didn't zoom in on wives and children, unless I missed it. I didn't watch the last 3 holes. I guess they weren't going for a family vibe. I will watch again, but with less anticipation. It was a Tuesday night and the weather sucks.
    • I wouldn't mind getting a Jupiter hat since I live down here, plus it's Tiger's team. I enjoyed how much faster it was, as well as the grass tees. I'm looking forward to Tiger's first match next week. Shame, it looks like the entire season's sold out. I live right down the road from it. Oh well.
    • I'm wearing a Ballfrogs hat in my photo with Lou from the other day (and I wore it again today): This was the WORST the production and live show are going to be, and they got a lot of things right with only room to grow. I think it'll only get better (not wildly so, but incrementally). And it didn't help that it was a blowout, and yet… it was still pretty interesting. Singles was weirdly a little bit of a drag. I almost wonder if that's not a mid-season change.
    • I missed about 11 weeks of golf this summer due to a back issue, and my distance is still not recovered.  Yet my Handicap Index is 7.0, as compared to 9.1 last January.  So apparently I'm better!  TBH, I haven't improved any skills, with the possible exception of making better decisions.  Ah well, it'll be fun in the new year, as it always is.
