EDIT: more often than not you're probably right, BUT, I think it's the guys who say they "average 260 yards carry" with a driver but hit their 3-wood 220 who are truly out to lunch.

I specifically referred to driver "carry" and how far a 3-wood was "hit".  I personally believe there's a difference and if someone actually uses the word "average" then they must have done the math. It seems off.

Not sure about the 230 yard 4-irons since I don't recall reading that.

Actually never play with the 60 deg wedge. Could never hit it with consistently enough for it to be useful. My bag usually consists of Dr, 3w, 3i-PW, 50, 52, 56, and Putter.  I don't really need a 50 and a 52, but i don't like the 58 or 60 degree wedge I have, so they aren't in the bag when I play.  And that opens up room for one of those clubs so it works out.

That reminds me...

There's 3 things almost every guy will exaggerate, how much he can bench press, how much tail he gets and how far he can drive a golf ball.  This thread was just asking for some controversy and accusations of exaggerating.

Fortunately, I've never had to lie about any of those three things.  I can drive a golf ball 300 yards with my putter,  I warm up with 300 lbs. to bench press, and I've had more women than Wilt Chamberlain.

I am just curious to such big differences between the wedges with everyone that hit their drives  270 yds plus. It ranges for a 60 degree 60 yds to 110 yds. How can this be? I know some people are de lofting their clubs with their hands forward that can gain distance and possibly flipping the wrist under the  ball instead of compressing it so that could make it shorter, but any other suggestions? I go to simulators and they tell me I hit 300+ every drive, however on the course, I carry about 265-270 yds. It depends how much roll I get or if I am in the fairway to total distance. I hit my 60 on a full hard swing 100 yds. Just a normal swing 95 yds. I mean I see a golf coach and he says I am one of the longest hitter he sees however on here it looks like everyone here hits farther than me.

All my distances are carry, depends if I hit it thin or I get enough height to stop it

This was the simulator I hit on, no wind or anything at a golf galaxy. Hence why I do not believe simulators are always right. Yes I am a long ball hitter, and I hit a few 300 in a round, however I am still curious about the people who say they hit the ball this far, but only hit 60 degree 60 yds.

Got to love indoor launch monitors. I also totally dominate the Dicks putting green. I am like 95% from 12 feet.

I am guessing a lot of people never try to hit a 60 degree wedge all out which is why you get the low numbers. 3/4 swings tend to work much better for a lot of people.  Take a look at the 6 iron distance (and adjust for loft) and you get a decent correlation.

To this day I've never hit my 60* with a full swing.  The only wedge I use for a full swing inside of 120 yards is my 52*.  Unless we're talking heavy winds, it's pretty much the only club I use outside of, say, 40 yards and inside of 120.

Most amateurs overate their distance.

Playing golf isnt as much about distance as accuracy and consistency.

However its easier to measure distance vs distance to state how one does agaisnt their peers.

I like to say, I hit it long enough to make the course easy.

I don't swing my high lofted wedges full.  A nice easy 3/4 PW goes 100 yards under control.  A 56 degree wedge might go the same distance but with no where near the same control.

The PW will also be flighted down a bit and bit and stop or pull back a few feet.  Try it you'll like it.  Take your highest wedge through 8 iron on a consistent 3/4 swing and see how far it goes.

Much easier to hit.

This kind of comment always shows up in distance threads.  It's just dumb.  Either you're saying that every course has markings that are wrong but magically we all hit our clubs the different wrong distance at every course, or every course in the country colludes to have markers that are the same amount shorter than they're marked, so we all can think we hit our clubs further than we do.  Maybe some markings are off by a yard or two but I've literally never once gotten a reading from someone with a laser or GPS that made it look like the markings on the course could possibly be off by more than a couple yards.

Smells more to me like you just get off feeling high and mighty telling people on the internet they just don't possibly understand how much shorter they hit their clubs than they like to pretend to themselves that they do.

This is not to say that having a laser can't be extremely helpful.  It's just false that you need it to know how far you carry your irons.  Driver, yes.

I think you're saying the same thing. He got more confidence in his irons distances and learned proper driver distances. It's the driver distance that's going to [potentially] be the farthest off unless you always play very straight holes. On some holes the markers are spot on and on other holes not so much.

While I find many course markings accurate, there is an issue with using them for driving distance.  The course markings are sometimes ony accurate to the middle of the green on a specific line.  One some holds I've played, there is only a slight dog-leg of a fairway, and the tee box marker will say something like 350 yards.  However, my GPS will show the middle of the green is only, say, 320 yards away on a straight line.  So the 350 is presumably on a line to the 150 yard-marker in the center of the fairway and then to the middle of the green.  Some folks may cut the corner slightly, only have 120 yards to the green, and think they hit a 300 yard drive when realistically it was still only a 275 yard drive, depending on how much they cut off of the corner.

Also, there ARE some courses with outdated tee box markers, and which have tees set up +/- 15 yards from those markers, and people will simply read off the scorecard how long the hole plays and then subtract their 2nd-shot distance to the middle of the green and think that's accurate, when it's not always the case.  That's why somebody may rely more heavily on rangefinders or gps rather than markers.

In my experience, fairway markers are more reliable than tee box markers.  And I typically cross-reference my GPS-measured distance with the nearest course marker for each shot.

    • I know you guys were discussing this like a year ago. But, ironically I just had this discussion with my brother-in-law. We literally just did one of these. I'd always used the "Slow-Cook, Rest, and Sear" Method. But my bother-in-law was convinced the "5-Min/lb, 500 degree" method was the way. So, we gave it a go. I have to say it came out great.  I have a 25 year old, electric oven, GE brand... Not sure if that matters, but it came out great. ... Of course we stressed that nobody was to open the oven.   I don't make these all that often so, I'm not sure if I can fully recommend one method or the other, because without doing a Pepsi Challenge, I'd say both ways come out great. 👍😁👍
