I agree with your statements. The spectator violated the rules, and should not have had a camera. Many touring pros in the past have become very upset under similar circumstances. Daly was right; the fan was wrong.

I saw the interview with the camera guy and he is a dead set d**khead. He basically went in daly's face and snapped away. The moral of the story is that he should not have had a camera and he deserved to have it smashed by daly. And I am glad the organisers are not going to make much action because it is idiots like this guy who sholdn't be allowed on a golf course

Yes, I think its a very interesting read, and paints a different picture of Daly from the view most have of him.

Daly is a cold fat mess on self-destruct, and I love to watch people self-destruct. From the classical perspective, the story of Daly meets all the Aristotelian elements of tragedy - except for one: anagnorisis (recognition). He is too stupid to recognize his own fall from the exalted heights upon which he once stood.

If you read the above mentioned book, you will realize that Daly does recognize that he has a problem. Recognizing a problem and being able to resolve it are not the same thing.

And since you are so fond of reading, I suggest that you actually read Aristotle’s “Poetics” to understand the Hellenistic meaning of recognition.

Just curious; how does someone who is illiterate write a book? Remember to be truly cultured you have to understand other cultures such as "country fried rubes" even if this is no to your personal tastes.

I like Johnny D, and the book is pretty funny for a quick trash read. Like a lot of folks with drinking problems, he knows he has one, but apparently has decided he's not done with his run yet. Since alcoholism is generally accepted throughout the medical community to be a disease (the disease that tells you you don't have a disease) rather than -- as many people would like to think -- a failure of will, I find it tragic that Daly gets eviscerated for his bad decisions and people keep heaping ignominy on him. The guy is a great golfer who is entirely screwed by personal problems and rather than feel sympathy for him people just keep bashing away.

If some jackass takes a picture with a flash right in your face, he deserves to get his camera smashed.

i for one am still a JD fan. i hope he gets his act together soon because id love to watch him play some good golf again. and as for the camera incident, the camera guy was clearly wrong for flashing a camera a foot away from his face. JD injured his back a cpl years ago because of a camera incident if my memory serves me correctly....

That doesn't excuse John's behavior. Two wrongs don't make a right, as they say.

If a guy cuts me off in traffic, I'm not allowed to go key his car in the parking lot. In other words, BOTH people were wrong. The spectator was a jerk and John could have handled it better. Except it's John Daly, so "could have" is up for debate.

i certainly would have done what John did, probly take it a step further too, i would never let someone disrespect me like that. The fan showed no respect to John...why should John show respect to the fan? The article also said that cameras were restricted from being brought to the tournament, so the guy ovbiously sneaked it in. The fan should be the one in trouble for this one, thats why they dont allow cameras at pga events. You cannot tell me that tiger or anyone else would have let this guy get up in their face during a serious round with thousands of dollars on the line.

I agree with you. It is my hope for 2009 that J. D. will wake up and see the errors of his ways. He should stay away from Hooters. He is a true natural talent, as Dottie Pepper, and Tiger have stated. I have seen him play a number of times, and he is both a fan favorite and a sad, sad disappointment:

1. At the practice round for the United States Open at Baltusrol in 1993, my son and I were standing with one fan along the fairway on a par 4 and watched Big John. He hit a wedge from 152 yards and missed the green. The fan said, "I can do better than that." "Ok, big boy, come over here and prove it," said the Arkansas Razorback. The fan went over, under the ropes, and was told the distance. It was uphill to the green. "Here is my wedge," said Big John. "I cannot hit a wedge that far," opined the fan. "Hit anything you want--even a driver. I do not care. Just put it on the green." "Let me have a 6 iron, " was the fan's reply. He then took the club, waggled a few times, and I told my son, "He looks like a player." With a smooth, well-balanced swing, he did put the ball on the putting surface. Big John walked over to him, gave him a high five, and said, "You, sir, are a player!" 2. At the 2007 Turning Stone Resort and Casino, in the Wednesday Pro-Am, I was standing by the tee, on a par 4 of about 384 yards. Next to me were an old couple. Big John came up to the tee, leaned on his driver, and kept smoking a cigarette. "What is he waiting for?" asked the wife. "M'am," explained the marshall, "He wants the group in front of him to get on the green." "He thinks he can hit the ball that far?" she asked. Then, the Razorback got up, ripped a big drive up the middle of the fairway, just short of the green. The lady could not follow the ball. "Where did it go? she asked. "Just short of the green," the marshall said. "Oh, my God," she exclaimed, "He can hit it that far." 3. The next day, in round one, J. D. played 7 holes, looked terrible, unshaven, and disheveled, and withdrew!! He was the big draw for the tournament and his absence for the next three days really hurt attendance, in the event that was won by Steve Flesch. Jeff Maggert's 64 on Friday was overshadowed by the report of J. D.'s withdraw. The tournament sponsor, the Oneida Nation, did not give J. D. a sponsor's exemption to play in 2008. Can you blame them? Boo Weekley is a good ole boy, like J. D. But he does not have the Razorback's self-destructive habits and does not embarrass tournament sponsors, companies that endorse him, and the fans of golf. They are a real contrast.
