I'm inclined to say Tiger. He alone could be considered responsible for putting golf back on the map. People who don't know anything about golf know who Tiger is, and know how dominant he is. I have many friends who were first inspired to pick up a club because of him.

As we have written before, in terms of total popularity around the planet, Pele stands alone. Football, or soccer as Americans insist on calling it, is the most popular sport around the world. The Super Bowl cannot come close to the viewing audience for the World Cup. Pele was the most popular star ever. Golf is a minor sport around the world, and baseball has greater world-wide popularity than American football.

When you think about it, it is obvious why this is. Most people around the world are poor, but they can afford one soccer ball for the whole village. They do not need shoes or any equipment at all. Baseball is more expensive, and American football and golf are out of reach for millions to afford.

Don't pay attention to PEZ. If it didn't happen before man walked on the moon, PEZ doesn't want to talk about it.

...for cheating and using his hands? If you're going to make the statement, back it up a bit.

Thanks for the post. I believe that the statistics on name recognition, knowledge of the man's accomplishments, and number of fans of "real football" put Pele ahead of everyone else. Ali would be second.

Maradona. The US has a certain infatuation with Pele, but I feel like Maradona really had the greater impact elsewhere. Also, the element of controversy adds to his "bigness" as a sports star for me. He was both the best and the most controversial--a rare combination. Like Tiger Woods and John Daly wrapped up into one genius football playing godsend.

Tossing in my 2 cents, I'll go with Ali. Years ago I was at a Lakers-Celtics NBA finals game and Ali came into the arena through one of the tunnels during an early timeout. An amazing buzz went through the place as people realized he was there, and then an amazing thing - the players stopped paying attention during the timeout and turned away from the coaches to watch Ali take his seat. Then the players, coaches, and even refs stayed focused on him when the buzzer sounded for play to resume, caught up in the crowd's adulation. I've never seen anything like that before or after, and was amazed that just his simple presence of moving to a seat could make the megastars stop and stare. Amazing.

maradona??? no chance. franz beckenbauer was bigger than maradona, and more talented to boot. but, pele was bigger than both of them, and is the best, and greatest ever.

Jordan is prob the greatest sports star ever, the only one close now prob is Tiger, with honorable mention to the Babe and Ali, and Pele worldwide as I dont have much interest for soccer but europeans go crazy over it. I love Nascar and have to put Dale Earnhardt up there as well, people argue racing is not a sport but it takes a lot of stamina to do what they do and the danger involved is tremendous and throw in Ricky Carmichael for motocross, even more dangerous.

Totally wrong. Beckenbauer isn't nearly as big a name and wasn't nearly as talented a player as Maradona. Biggest sports star ever wouldn't be an American, sorry to burst your bubble. Given the media storm around his entire life, it probably is David Beckham.

    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
