He's not my favorite, but I disagree Nantz tries to be the story, he always tried to draw things out of Venturi and I think does so with the others, there's the occasional poetry, but I still think he knows his role and is respectful of where he is and "the moment", so to speak.

Venturi?!? When's the last time you watched the Masters?!?!

Egads!

Zubaby, I think you have an axe to grind and IMO are targeting something that isn't near as bad as you think.

I enjoy the coverage. I enjoy the fact that they treat it as a special event. It is special. Otherwise, why would it be a "major?"

I love the fact that CBS treats it as a one-of-a-kind event.

And, Nantz does a good job. Your railing against him makes no sense. Because he wants to turn a phrase that will be remembered? Are you serious?

I think you have too much time on your hands to be sooooo against Nantz' job.

Ease up Francis.

Bring on McCord and Feherty I'd say. Nantz is boring. Then again he won't keep me from watching.

I think they do a pretty good job overall.

I'd like to see a little more coverage of the amateurs in the opening rounds though.....even if they're struggling.

Hands down, The Masters and the U.S. Open are my two favorite televised sporting events each year.

i dont like it that much either. i hate the shots of the stupid azaleas and other shrubbery, i hate the hushed tones they talk in, i hate the twinkly sentimental piano music, it all sounds uppity to me. i LOVE the limited commericals. show me the golfers making shots and thats all i care about.

Venturi?!? When's the last time you watched the Masters?!?!

Good one. Is it in color now?

Of course, I never miss it, just using Venturi as an example of what I think is one of Nantz's strengths, which is asking questions to get info from the "color" guy, as opposed to being the story, which some accuse him of doing. As an aside, I really liked Venturi, but his years of resentment toward Palmer as manifested in his book about their Masters "incident" really gave me a funny feeling about him.

To be fair, Nantz has pretty much said that he prepares certain lines for certain outcomes in advance (even if it's Sunday afternoon when the leaders are on 14) so that they can be remembered - i.e. so that he can "mark" the occasion with a unique utterance.

I've heard him cite his "A win for the ages" call when Tiger won in 1997 and "Is it his time... YES!" when Phil won in 2004.
As an aside, I really liked Venturi, but his years of resentment toward Palmer as manifested in his book about their Masters "incident" really gave me a funny feeling about him.

I'll keep this short since it's off-topic, but I felt the same way. Loved him (and Summerall) for their commenting, but Venturi always felt a little funny. I like him more after reading "The Match" and a bit more about the troubles he's had in life. I now see it as more "sad" than anything.

I love watching the Masters - for two simple reasons -
1. Its the best players in the world competing against each other in a beautiful environment
2. It doesnt get interrupted every shot for commercials

What more can you ask for?

Coverage? Who cares as long as the cameras are on and they are showing everyone who's in the hunt or making a charge. I know it's not just another tournament but really, it is.

I love it when someone complains about something that they didn't have to pay for.

If it were pay-per-view, I could understand you nitpicking CBS. But, it isn't. You don't have to shell out a dime, yet you complain.

I love the Masters because of the lore, the quality of the broadcast, quality of the field, and lack of commercials.

Thank you CBS for broadcasting such a great spectacle that didn't cost me anything.

  • 3 years later...

Honestly I can't wait for the major's broadcasts on the internet so if you are tired of the telly broadcast go to the net. I love love love following the premier groups and you get a wayy better perspective of the golf course. Plus you can watch it at work ;). The announcers are not terrible on it but I am engrossed in the place and really can't remember much they say.

The Masters is much more that just a golf tournament.  It is history.  It is atmosphere.  It is the beginning of Spring after a long Winter (most years).

I suppose you could reduce the Masters broadcast to look just like every other golf tournament.  But it isn't.  It's special. Nantz gets it. He knows that there will be a lot of non-golfers watching just to see the beauty of Augusta, and perhaps get a little wrapped up in all the stories that may exist regarding the players.

As an avid golfer, and avid golf tournament watcher, I appreciate the understated announcing at the Masters.  It's once a year.  Enjoy it, for all that it is.

The Masters is what it is, and it isn't going to change just because a few people bitch about it on an internet forum.  It's the best broadcast of the year, even is is CBS.  I wish that we could get more of Feherty and less of Nantz, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen either.

As far as the coverage, I want to see the leaders, or in the early rounds, the players currently on the course with the best chance of being near the lead on the weekend.  I also like to see some coverage of the leading amateurs.  I don't really care about the guy who plays himself out of the tournament on day one, then lights it up for a few holes when the pressure is off and he doesn't have a chance to actually compete, or even to make the cut.

    • Oh man I had one today. Ball below and I still chilli dipped it!!
    • Playing Cog Hill #2 yesterday with @cedrictheo and @NatalieB… we get to the par-three 7th, a 185-yard (or 145-yard) par three. There's a St. Judge Million Dollar Shot challenge on the hole if you choose to participate. The rules: $20 entry Hit the green, get your $20 back. Hit it to ≤ 10 feet, get $50 back. Hit it to ≤ 3 feet, get $100 back. Hit it in the hole, get $10,000 back. (No, I don't know where the "million dollar" bit comes from). We all decline, though in hindsight I wish I had just given him $20 for our group and said "keep it, please." I step up… and hit it to 30". @cedrictheo steps up… hits it to about 40". @NatalieB steps up… and we both tell her how bad she sucks, how terrible she is, etc. because she hits it to about nine and a half feet. 😄  If we had all entered we'd have won between $110 and $140. Ha ha. (I'm still glad we didn't as that would have been TAKING money from charity.) Anyway, three really good shots on a tough hole. The guy running the challenge must have thought we were nuts. He said "Man, you guys really should have entered!" 😄
