I think these threads and the many exaggerations in them are actually hurting people's golf games. New members may actually start to believe that it is normal for the average 20+ handicap to hit his 7I 160y, while in reality a 140y shot is perfectly respectable. I catch myself on the range focussing too much on distance because I feel that something must be wrong when I hit more than 10 yards below 'internet average'.

i agree it would be funny i noticted when i went to the course yesterday my drives aren't 250 to 270 at all more like 230 250 and i shot a good round yesterday and hit 8/14 fairways 8/18 gir and shot a 78 so it would be funny to see them claim 72% gir average or something crazy

Looks like I'm one of the short knockers:

Driver: 220-230
3Wood: 200
5Wood: 190
3 Hybrid: 180
4 Hybrid: 170
5 iron: 160
6 iron: 150
7 iron: 140
8 iron: 130
9 iron: 120
PW: 110
GW: 95
SW: 75

I don't doubt that there are some very good players w/ fast swingspeeds who can hit 200+ 5 irons but most of us midhandicaps would do better by taking one more club and swinging easier. Some of my buddies try to blast a 9iron 150 yards and the results usually aren't pretty. I'm 43 and no longer care if I'm using 1 or 2 more clubs than the other players.

Hmm I'll play too. These are pretty close, though I've only actually checked exact yardages on a few of them.

PW - 125

56* - 90
60* - Never hit a full shot
Putter - 150 on the driving range. On a good day.

And wow, I'm amazed at all the folks with 300 yard drives and 150 yard pitching wedges(sarcasm).

Alright, here are what I approximate my distances at. I feel like the distances I hit at the range are definitely a little shorter due to the crappy range balls....and I haven't really taken the time to calculate shots on the course. I would really like to know if these seem reasonable for someone of my handicap...don't be afraid to knock me down a peg or two...haha.

I definitely need to add a GW to cover some distance between the PW and SW...could probably take out the 5wood to make some room since there is a little overlap between it and the hybrid. Anyone have any better suggestions?

I always think I have my distances dialed in and then something happens, its either much longer for a certain time or much shorter. Last time I played I had ever single drive measured. My average was 198 yards with roll. My average ball speed was 156mph, figure that one out.

Did anyone catch Bubba Watson at Quail Hallow yesterday (or maybe saturday) hit a 3i 270 yards off the tee???? I had to pick my jaw up from the floor....as well as my shattered teeth!!!! This guy has what seems to be an unorthodox swing, or at least you are constantly tought not to do what he does...

As for my distances...they vary by mood, temperature, humidity (both wich affect mood), and wind. But if I had to put ranges....

Driver: 240 - 260 (289 Max)
3w: 205 - 225 (Still getting used to this club)
3h: 190 - 200
4i: Maybe 180, I don't really feel comfortable with this club.
5i: 175
6i: 165
7i: 155
8i: 145
9i: 135
PW:105 - 115
GW:100 - 110
SW:95 - 105
LW: 60

The wedges are not 100% dialed. I am pretty certain on the PW, but th eGW and SW, I am not sure entirely, but I am in that range. I really don't use the SW, unless I'm in sand...I need to explore this club more. As for the LW, when I hit perfect, is a thing of beauty, but I'm only hitting it that way about 40% of the time....

I need to hit the range a little more!
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

  • 3 weeks later...
Still figuring out my game really. I can hit the short irons a lot better than anything else.. Kind of funny I think, used to be the other way. Next time I get to the range I will have to pay attention to what distances I go... Trying to re-analyze my swing and so far it isn't working out too great... But this last time I went I to the range I figured out my short irons, but I can't for the life of me transfer my swing to my long irons and driver/woods.

I know this isn't the thread for this, but if you have some helpful tips, other than get lessons.. I'm gonna work on that as soon as I can.. lol please send me a message or something.
Thanks.
