Srixon Z-Star...

I just recently tried out the new Srixon Z-Star, and I must say this thing has amazed me.

I was playing the Nike One Tour for a few months after switching over from the Nike One Black (the Platinum would balloon on me way too much). I never really liked the feel of the One Tour, so I began searching for a new ball. After reading the Golf Digest ball test that gave the Z-Star 5 stars in every category except of "Demand", I thought I might as well try them out.

I could go on in the typical way of trying to quantify the distance advantage or how much spin it offers, but to me no one can do that without conducting a true "scientific" experiment with controls and actual measurement. All I can really go by is feel. And this ball feels like nothign else I've played. Almost every ball either feels like it "clicks" or it feels like I'm hitting a superball (soft but heavy). The Z-Star is the first ball I've hit that feels soft yet light/powerful/explosive. Off the putter face, it's so easy to control distance and is addicting to the point I didn't want to leave the practice green.

I was just wondering if anyone else here has tried it and what their thoughts were. I was reading elsewhere that stores are running out of these and they are on backorder for the next few weeks. I guess the word is getting out.

They go for $39.99, or $6 cheaper than Pro V and Callaway's equivalent. I really want to try these... anyone know where I can get a sample sleeve?

Just about any pro shop or golf store will sell them by the sleeve if they have them. You may have to ask since they probably won't have a bunch sitting out, but I have never been turned away for just wanting a sleeve.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

As soon as I finish up some charts for Dave, we'll have the review online.

WOW! I am totally in the same boat here.

I caved over the weekend and bought a sleeve of the Nike One Platinums at the pro shop. Though I only lost one of the three in the drink, I could not for the life of me stop it from ballooning. Everything came up short. I guess its just not the right ball for me. I was reading the exact article you're referencing this morning and wanted to try out the Srixons. So any input on its performance would be greatly appreciated.

I can't really comment on the Z-Star's performance because I didn't play it side-by-side with another ball. To me, the differences between golf balls at a certain level (premium vs. premium, bargain bunch vs. bargain bunch) is negligable, and (again, this is jsut my opinion) most of the "benefits" people see are in their heads. When reviewing a ball, people will claim that the newer version carries 10 yards further or stops on a dime; I'm a firm believer that to anyone other than a near-scratch golfer, the minute differences between these balls won't make a noticable difference in your game. If you are talking about switching from a Pinnacle Gold to a ProV1, yeah, that'll make a difference, but switching form a Nike One Tour to a ProV1 won't. That being said, the one key factor that will be noticable to all golfers is the feel of the ball. The problem with this is two fold; feel is completely subjective and differs from person to person, and the feel of the ball changes given your swing type/speed and the other equipment you play with. For my swing type and equipment, the Z-Star is the best feeling ball I have ever played. It feels soft yet solid, and it doesn't have that heaviness that many other "premium" balls tend to have.

I am down to my last sleeve of Nike One Platinums and I was thinking of trying these out as I have also heard good things about them. After reading this, I may go pick up a box and try them out.

I prefer to stick with the same ball forever. Changing balls all the time would effect the consistency of my short game for sure.

I am big headed and i love it. Try it yourself and see how much your game improves.

The only reason I switched was because they stopped making my ball and I didn't care for either of the new options.

I switched to the srixon Z-URC last year and I liked it a lot. The Z-Star is even better. I always played Pro-Vx's before but had a really hard time controlling the spin. The same was true to an even worse degree for the NIke Balls. The Srixon is the best of both worlds. Great feel and controllable spin.

Agreed, the Z-Stars are very impressive. Ive tried Nike One Platinums, Pro V1s and Bridgestone B330s and IMO the Srixon Z-Star is every bit as good as any of those balls (if not better) and its less expensive.

This is exactly why I am looking for a new ball. I can't control the spin of the Nike Platinums. I like the Pro Vs but I think I will give the Srixons a try.

The Z-star reminded me of the B330 a little softer with a little more spin (very little) I would say they are like a mix of a B330 and a Pro V1 better than the tour IX or tour I never really cared for calloway balls they feel clunky off the putter I would say Srixon would be moving in on the #1 ball in golf if more people would try it I think they would switch.

I just read the review, and it's pretty much what I expected. It sounds like the "performance" is comparable to the ProV1, and that the feel he's describing is what myself and others have experienced. It just seems that he doesn't care for the feel as much. I prefer a ball that has more of a solid/soft feel instead of a rubber-band-like softness, and it seems that the author of that review prefers does like it as soft as it can be.

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
