I know they don't use/need them but I wonder what the typical + handicap of a touring pro would be? For like, the Nationwide or PGA? I've heard Tiger would be around a +8... I'm just wondering what kind of game you'd need to compete on that level. I see we have a few TST members in the plus area...

I would guess since the lowest index you can acheive is a +4, i would assume all of those guys are +4. Or at least they were before they turned pro.

I think he is speaking hypothetically. Assuming there was no bottom. Where would a Phil / Tiger / Sergio be compared to the nationwide guys vs. Mini tour guys? What skill level (translated to handicap) would you have to be to be competitive with those types of players?

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Rediculous. And that doesn't take into account the set up of the courses for the events. It is not the course we would see if we played from the tips.

Those guys are amazing.

And he would hammer a scratch player giving him 8 shots.

Right.

And remember, that's his handicap index, not his course index. So if he plays a course that's got a slope of 136, that's 8.1 * 136/113 = course handicap of 10 strokes. So he'd have to give the scratch golfer 10 strokes (not 8)... ...and he'd probably still beat him silly. :)

Very interesting, thanks (both of you) for the link! Now, off to calculate some of the Nationwide guys!

Nice. I was thinking of doing this at the end of the season, similar to the style of the article I linked to (#1, POY, barely making THE 25, keeping full status, not even breaking into 2nd round Q-school, etc).

But go ahead, I don't care if someone else figures it out for me. I wonder what Michael Sim is playing to these days. He was one hole away from a battlefield promotion.

I think I read recently he got his index down to 0.0 . I hope so! He was able to play to his then-3.2 last June, despite a duffed chip.

Of course, he isn't a professional golfer... although maybe he'll go the Rick Rhoden route.

I can't believe how good these guys are. Well I can because I see them so often, but you really do take for granted what these guys can do. It's freakin' amazing.

Just thinking about tiger beating a scratch golfer by 8 shots makes me want him to come to New Zealand again one day.

They say golf is like life, but don't believe them. Golf is more complicated than that.

They don't maintain handicaps, but if you have a program like Scorecard http://cynicalpeak.com/scorecard/
you could enter your favorite player's scores on the PGA Tour and figure one out after about 5-10 weeks. I would be interested to see what the top 10 player's handicaps would work out to be.

I would guess somewhere in the +3 to +6 range. To be a +8 as was suggested for Tiger seems a bit much. Just given his scoring average of 69.7 this year, he would have a tough time spotting a good scratch player 8 shots. I'll take 8 shots from him any day, but the fact that I would be playing against Tiger might have a slight effect on my performance

Why do you think Tiger's is wrong? Your handicap is suppose to get you to the course rating not par. The set up of the courses they play all have course ratings over 75 and since your index is based on the average of your 10 best of 20, not your overall average, it seems correct to me.

Yup. It's not like Tiger's playing a course with a rating of 72.6 or something.

    • playing with cleveland hybrid irons have friends that use hybrids anyone using hybrid irons or hybrids would appreciate fwwdback
    • I dont know if I really have a favorite, but there are two that have stuck in my mind for a very long time. #15 at Erie Golf course during the Finals of the EDGA Matchplay. Was up early and then lost a few holes in row so the match was close again. My opponent had a short putt for birdie. I hit past hole high, but 35 feet right. I drained the putt and looked over at my opponent who was in disbelief.   #8 at Whispering Woods during another year of the EDGA Matchplay. Was playing a very cocky opponent who made sure to mention on the first tee how many times he won the club championship at this course. I hammered this 30 footer that clanked off of the pin and dropped. My opponent was disgusted and that made me weirdly happy. I went on to win 5&3 or something like that, so that entire day has stayed in my memory.
    • Day 20: Did 30 minutes after getting home from work, before kid's baseball practice. This session was piecing out the new hip move in transition, doing 2-3 rehearsals from the top, and then hitting a ball from between P5/P6. Did another 45 minutes after baseball practice and dinner. Did 30 more minutes of what I did earlier, and then about 15 minutes of full swings trying to incorporate athletically.
    • Day 296: did a stack session.
