I am playing in one of these at my local course tomorrow. I was thinking of taking my 18* hybrid, 6 or 7 iron, 54* wedge and putter.
Does this seem like a good choice? Which clubs would you take?

I've played this, except we run the course and your score is a mix between how many shots you take and your run time. I took driver (choke up if you have to), 6 iron (maybe 5i), 56*, and putter. It was a good time.

Ben Hogan is my swing coach.

I go driver, 6 iron, 56˚ and putter.

Short par 4s are driver, 56˚. Long par 4s are Driver, 6 iron. Par 5s are Driver, 6 iron, 56˚. Par 3s are the toughest, either a 6 or a hard de-lofted 56˚.

putter: Studio Select Newport 1.5

driver, 6 iron, 56, putter i think would be the easiest - if i could hit my 3 wood reliably everytime, probably swap driver for that, though i don't use my 3 wood often so i don't know where exactly it would get to on each hole.
What I Play:

4 wood
7 or 8 iron depending on the course length, I can rip a 7 if I need to
sw or lw, depending on if the ground is soft or hard, or on the conditions of the rough

sounds like a good time

Completely dependent on the course.

I'd sit down with a scorecard and figure out how to best play each hole with just four clubs, then select the four that best fit my needs. Putter will always be one......you hit it more than any other club and need it at least once on every hole.

The other 3 would prob be something like a 3 wood, 6 iron, gap wedge......but that's just a guess at this point.

Those things are fun. You'll have a great time having to hit various shots with different clubs too.

In David's bag....

1) any wood you can hit off the fairway, Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood or 7 wood.

2) mid iron 6 or 7 iron

3) wedge 52 - 56 degree

4) putter

a) double check the club and distances in your mind playing each hole of the course your going to play.

b) practice take distance off each club by choking up or opening the club face and aiming left or 3/4 swing, what ever works best for you.

c) practice putting off the green, sometime it helps to add loft to the putter when putting off the green to help the ball skip over the grass. practice chipping will all your clubs including the wood and see what gives you the best results.

have fun and you will appreciate your 14 clubs next time you go out, and your creativity will improve.

Like David said, it can change depending on the course, but this is the general range I'd take on most par 72 courses.

3W, 5H, 8I, 54° wedge. I can putt with either the 3W or the 5H. Practice a bit and you'll find that you really limit yourself by taking the putter. You will do better with 4 clubs that can be used in different ways... the putter is only good for one thing... putting.

    • Starting over - missed posting yesterday and it had been less than 28 days since last off day….today was tempo drill day.  Worked on takeaway and moving smoothly into weight shift.
    • I know it is probably dependent on a lot of factors, but how windy does it have to be out before you need to start guessing on how much it would influence the break of your putt?  When I played at Bandon, it was like 25-30 mph winds. The caddies talked about the wind negating break. The only time I had it visually influence my putt was on hole 18 at Bandon Dunes. My missed my putt on the high side of a pretty severe breaking putt. The slope around the hole was in the 2-3 degree range. As the ball was about to come to a stop, the wind gusted and pushed the ball half a rotation into the cup.  The rest of the week I thought it had no influence at all. I was thinking, is it just over thinking to try to account for the wind?
    • Day 310 - 2025-08-06 Went downtown in the late afternoon and got nearly two hours of work in. Not a ton of breaks. Was blasting the TS at the end, from a HomePod and two TVs. 😄
    • I watched this video of his last night: I don't hate him like @boogielicious apparently does and thought this was a pretty good premise so I gave it a shot.  Not the worst thing in the world and I especially liked the premise.  He's got a lot of air to fill by himself, which he isn't great at, but in doing so, you get some decent insight into how his brain works while setting up shots/putts.
    • So driver is longer than all the other clubs and gear effect plays a bigger part with driver than anything else. If you're hitting it out of the heel it could slice even if you have the face square. Could try some foot spray or impact tape and check that. Other thing is if the shaft is different in how it flexes or how flexible it is it could be affecting your swing somewhat. Driver also has the straightest face, so while with a 4 iron it might fade, with driver that can wind up being a slice with the same face angle at impact.
