My dad, who taught me the game, has the reverse C swing. He's a very effective golfer (4 handicap, played Rutgers in college) so you can be a good player like that. Your going to have your flaws just like anyone else but my dad is a great ball striker, easily the best part of his game. If only he could putt, lol.

So, would I teach it to anyone now? No. He didn't teach me his swing, he taught me the "right" swing, or more "modern" swing...but that doesn't mean you can't be effect with it.

Sorry but "..So my hips are moving slightly towards the target, but my upper body is not moving towards the target. Therefore, after the followthrough, my hips are in front of my upperbody and head,.." SHOULD BE in your(any) good swing !M

O, I feel like an idiot. I guess i just need to keep practicing and working on the weight shift. Thanks for all the help!

Me neither (spliting hairs

Sorry mate I have the book too and pg 56 doesn't say that but on pg 54 under the one plane swing which I'm sure is the page you meant it says during the backswing the hips are centered and may move slightly to the left foot.

Of course we are agreeing on the same point here I think that when weight moves to the left foot naturally the core of our body has moved over as well, now depending on how much you have gone into your backswing with your weight then logically you must return to the same point. If you are an old school swinger then you might move across to that back leg some way,but obviously if you hold the turn more centrally then that shift is much smaller, personally I believe that you can't eliminate all sliding if that's what we call it. On the reverse c well if you are more 2 plane then possibly due to needing to shallow out that steep swing then your back will arc more because your fighting to stay behind the ball more which is why I like the 1 plane method more.

Iacas is convinced of a lateral slide,I prefer the term rotational,in the past the word was a hip bump.As an advocate of a one plane style and I have adopted Hardy's ideas he says to rotate and not slide, but you have to finish on that left foot.

That's the thing: you can't

just rotate. Every good player gets their left hip outside of their left foot at impact. That's a slide, a weight shift, whatever you want to call it. Hogan called it "bump and turn" basically, but his "bump" was quite a large lateral shift. Watch the video, look at the still frames from him and Tiger.
Some one plane notes I read say simply stand your weight on the left foot at the start of your transition, and this will lead to the hip moving across.I conciously don't slide forward but I know that there is some.

Yeah, that may work for some people. Some others might want to think of their tailbone going up and forward. Others want to think of their left knee going down and forward (it can't actually go down much, obviously, since there's no joint between your knee and ankle).

Iacas says to slide forward with your hips in the golf swing and he's a 2 handicap so no argument it's worked for him.

Yeah, and my ballstriking improves the more lateral movement I get. I used to have a minimal transition - it's improved greatly lately (lessons) and I'm getting more distance and better strikes.

This is the confusion created by golf and probably why there are so many different terms. Also people like to think of certain swing thoughts which are personal to them and a particular swing style. Great work though Iacas considering your handicap you have obviously worked very hard on your swing and I'm not one to discredit others views, but I always enjoy sharing different opinions.

Hopefully this thread wont make me think too much about lateral movement, but it is essential to have slight movement towards your target.

The way I think of it is this - if you don't shift laterally towards the target, the odds of you striking the ball flush diminish greatly. Unless you're REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD at leading with your hands through the zone, the club will simply return to the ground BEHIND the ball as it was when you addressed the ball (or you'll compensate and thin it or come over the top, etc.). This description might not work for everybody, but it does help me ingrain an urgency to laterally move towards the target. What I don't get about Iacas' description above is having your left hip OUTSIDE of your left foot at impact. Wouldn't that make you fall over?

You wouldn't fall over, no, but it's more the sensation. I don't think the hip

actually gets outside of the foot, but it gets awfully close. Again, this image: Nicklaus talked about rolling his ankles on both the takeaway and downswing, and you definitely roll your weight to the outside of your lead foot on the downswing before the follow-through brings you into a tall finish.

Hmmmm. So you're saying that you actually are falling over through impact but then as you finish your follow through, the weight of the clubhead counteracts the tipping over? Hard to believe, but as with many things in this game - its the extreme minutia that make it so fun!

Edit - whoa, didn't notice Hogan's hip there!

While we are on the subject. I have recently developed something in my swing which makes me fall forward after the shot. I've been coming arms first for a long time and recently started working on hip rotation. Is it just that I'm not used to it or could some flaw be the reason? I swing, follow through and the weight is barely too much forward so I sort of tip slowly forward and have to take a step.

Don't worry, its not just you. Happens to me too sometimes. Though to be honest, the resulting shot usually isn't all that bad

I haven't noticed a difference in the shots. I hit some good and some bad, but regardless of if I fall forwards or not.
