This thread makes me laugh. Only 1 guy I know that can hit an 8i 160+ yards and he is 6'8" an erratic as ****.

I've never seen so many people hit their 9-irons 160 yards. Most pros don't average that. But apparently the 20 handicappers here do...

it's not real hard to get a 9i to 160 dude

more believable than a LW 100yds + hit the gym, have a strong core, shoulders, back and tonns of flexibility drills i used to hit my 7i to 150, now i'm a 9i from 150 or so 160 is a bit long, but it can be done

dude look at a majority of the people w single digi hcp's most of them base their 9i from 150 or so...it's not that un-believable to hit an 8i to 160 or so, at all being 6'8" has ZERO to do with your buddy hitting an 8i to 160 BTW i am 6'2" and 195lbs...i have no problem hitting my 8i to 160, could even wrench in a 9i, but the 8i is a better club for that distance my best bud in H/S is 5'9" and like 140 lbs...also same yardages as me w his irons...it's not all size bro

its weird because in my 10 years of playing competitive golf I can count the number of people that hit 25 to 30 yards past me every hole on my fingers.
Driver: i15, 3 wood: G10, Hybrid: Nickent 4dx, Irons: Ping s57, Wedges: Mizuno MPT 52, 56, 60, Putter: XG #9

some days way too far for my own good, other days 15 yards short of that.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

For the shorter irons, I tend to de-loft with my steep swing thus increasing my distance on those clubs. This is less pronounced for the 3-6i.

160 for a 9i is a bit strong for me, but for not an issue for an 8i.

My distances have been all over the place this year. (I've already posted to this thread twice with updates.) I've made quite a few major swing adjustments and I am having trouble dialing in my distances. My LW (58°/10°) has been as short as 60 yards and as long as 105 with a full swing. My 8 iron which for years was a very consistent 145 degrees was at 170 today at the range. I played with my brother (a beginner) at a short par 31 course on Saturday. I shot in the low 40s due mostly to not being able to find the right club for the distances I needed. I usually shoot about 34 or 35 at this course.

I don't know if I am finally reaching my distance potential or if these are just flukes. I am unable to rely on my irons at this point. My scores were better when I was playing out of the trees on the right and forcing myself to get up and down to save pars and bogeys.

So here is my latest update (median distances):

I scoop my irons which is why I have such short distances. I wish I could hit down I just cant, I play really clean and have high shots that drop on the green great but its a trade off in distance. My #1 flaw is chipping, I just cant do it , costs me 10 strokes a game no joke

I know the distances I hit the ball because I count every yard of the hit by walking to the ball, I cannot believe some of the distances people are hitting their clubs, perhaps the PGA should make more room for all the players who can hit a pitching wedge 148 yards or their 3wood off the deck 260 yards. I looked up the average distances of clubs for amateurs and I am considered a long hitter, my pitching wedge distances ate between 100-118 and my 3wood goes about 225. I do not normally participate in these discussions but I wanted to find out the difference between distances at sea level and further inland. Guys golf is hard enough without having to brag about who is longer...did you get that!!!

    • Better stuff today.  Backswing mapping, watching the club go back to where I want it, pause and feel the position, take it back to address, and repeat while looking at the ball.  Some feels I am playing around with.  1) Feeling like my right hand is pushing out away from me to keep the right arm extended. Really actively resist the momentum of the swing to collapse the right arm. I can't do this early because I will just push my hands outward. It's like A2.5 to A3.5.  2) Feeling a bit less flex in the left wrist at A3. I can't do this much or I will just roll the club inside. I caught myself doing this a few times and stopped.  3) Like above, feeling the overall body position at A3. I ideally want my swing to be A3.5 in length. Downswing, I got to really feel the pause again.  I also was doing some downswings while looking at the club at A3-A4 just to make sure it was going down and not out. I kind-of can hit the ball flush while not even looking at the ball. 🤣 Yea, trying to disconnect the hands down and tilting back to lower the club is difficult.  Also, even if I get my hands down better, I end up hitting straight hooks or flipping straight cuts. The club doesn't come in flush a lot. I definitely feel a flip at the ball the ball most of the time.
    • Day 4 March 15th, 2025 hit about 20 golf balls, a lot of non-hitting practice. Backswing length to A3 feels, downswing stuff.
    • Take this with a grain of salt but, when I see high speed/high leverage freewheeling swings like yours (from your swing video), it makes me think that considering the combo of outward and downward pressure required, you might not be applying sufficient downward pressure through impact. Tendency is more out than down. A good analogy is keeping an inflated ball pushed down underwater in a pool. I think it is the hardest force/pressure component to master.  It's a guess. I also think back pain is a symptom, theoretically speaking.
    • Heron Ridge in Virginia Beach yesterday, hole #7 for those in the area.  Would this box be considered an immovable obstruction with free relief?  (It was in my back swing as the hole was to the left of my ball in the picture.)  You can see that it sits just off the cart path.  How about all the mud and tire tracks?  When I addressed the ball my feet were sinking in wet mud so I took relief for standing water.  Right or wrong?  Thoughts?
