I took a look at Tiger and Ernie els iron shots on youtube and noticed there is a huge difference between the times they both set their wrists on the back swing. Ernie has the club almost fully cocked before his left hand has passed his right leg where as Tiger does not start to set his till his left arm is parallel with the ground. I used to follow Tigers style but not find Ernies far earsier to emulate and am hitting the ball far more consistently. IMHO as I think Ernie is a better natural golfer it might be the swing for me rather than trying to imitate Tigers superior more manufactured style. What d'you think?

good question man. I have tried both and it's still up in the air for me. I was originally taught one-piece takeaway which delayed my wrist cock to an extreme. Now I am going the other way. It's sort of a toss up which works better for me.

I don't think it has anything to do with "natural ability." Plus, Tiger was golfing at age three, four, five... - I'm not sure he lacks "natural ability."

I think the wrist set happens whenever it happens for you. Some players benefit from doing it earlier, some later. I don't think one method is better or worse than the other(s). Some players will benefit from switching, though, if it helps to cure a problem. For example, if you tend to rotate your forearms (and thus the club) open at the takeaway, an earlier wrist cock might help to prevent that. And others like to feel really wide, so they don't wrist cock very early.

The one piece takeaway(less wrist cock to start) works better for me. Your results may vary obviously.

Lately....I've been getting most of my wrist cock at address upon gripping the club.....this angle is maintained throughout the swing....with a

small amount of additional hinge at the top of the backswing just prior to transition. The results have been promising. Friday's round was one of my better ballstriking rounds this year...since I really fouled up my left knee in December.

I've not found the right position for the arms and wrists yet, but I certainly prefer a one piece takeaway where the wrists cock from the weight of the club when it goes past perpendicular to the ground. My body feels out of control and not working together if I cock early.

On some pitch shots and out of the sand I cock it early. I have noticed that cocking the wrists is an important part of a shot form the sand.

I do this as well. Along with playing the ball off of my back foot it helps me from getting to "handsy" and ensuring a downward strike on the ball.

With my other clubs, I have a low takeaway so I tend to cock my wrists late. It just makes the transition to my downswing a bit easier. Honestly, I don't see why it matters. As long as you can create a bit of lag and release the club before impact, who cares when you cock your wrists?

I dont want to throw anyone off here but I want to just emphasize that early wrist cock and late wrist cock can equal the same thing at the top of the swing as long as your shoulders turn with the proper sequence. A one piece takeaway doesnt always mean you cant hinge your wrist "early" , it just means you take the club back with your shoulders and not your arms.

havent ever thought about it... can i pick both? or either? or ummm half way through?
i know at the beginning of every season i always purposely do it early until my swing starts to flow more naturally... after that i dont think about it...

and ill do it early on some kinds of pitch/chip shots... not all... depends on what i want the ball to do for me

Getting the wrist set is secondary to a complete shoulder turn which helps load the hips. In my opinion, It is easier to get a full shoulder turn to help load the hips with a longer take away, letting your wrists set naturally. Notice tiger's take away, he sets his wrists after the shoulder turn. Els' early wrist cocking looks like a timing mechanism for his swing (he still gets into position at the top of his back swing). If you consciously set your wrists early, it may lead to hitting the ball 'fat' more often because of an incomplete backswing.
