It seems pretty obvious to me that manners degrade more and more with every generation.

Yeah it's rude. But, it's not like it killed anybody. And I would hope that a pro golfer wouldn't care what any of us mortals would think/say about their games anyway. They are great and most of us aren't even close to their level. So, Tiger probably didn't care at all.

Yelling at a golf course in general has always bothered me. First off, people say the dumbest things like "Get in the hole" on a five hundred yard hole. That'll happen. And it's ridiculously inconsiderate to the guys on adjacent and nearby holes. They can hear everything that was yelled...and no one knows if the other players are in the middle of their swings. It seems that if you don't talk during the nearest player's swing, but yell (from however far away and accidentally) during a player swinging far away, then you should either not yell or talk during all swings. Seems unfair to the "guy over there."

However, I really don't think that sounds should bother pros. Me, you, your buddy, maybe sounds can break our concentration. But pros in more traditional American sports (basketball, baseball, football, etc.) deal with yelling, screaming, and taunting by fans all the time. A pro golfer should be able to do the same.

Ah, yes. Nothing like throwing a blanket generalization over entire generations. It's always the young people's fault. Has been since the beginning of time.

Yeah, that's not really what he said. At least, that's not the way I took it.

If you think crowds at golf tournaments behave the same way they did 100, 50, or even 20 years ago, you clearly weren't watching golf in 1989... The worst thing back then was some guy wearing a rainbow wig with a John 4:13 sign (or whatever it was).

I understand your point. The point I was making was that it's not the "young people" of today. In my opinion, it's society as a whole. I see as many or more folks in their mid-50's acting like morons at the tourney's than I do people in their twenties or younger.

I suppose it's all perception and each individual has their own bias on where society's morals have gone. No, people don't behave the same as they used to, but "people" includes all age groups, not just the young ones.

I've seen plenty of 60,70 and 80 year old people at golf tournaments. I've never heard one of them yell "GET IN THE HOLE!"

A generalization would be to say that most younger golf fans are loud and rude. I don't think anyone here thinks that! However, if you take the loud boors aside and count 'em up, you're not likely to find many old folks.

To be fair, he didn't say "young people", he said manners are degrading with each generation. Meaning that, for example, 40 year old people today are not as polite, in general, as 40 year old people say 30 years ago.

As for other sports being noisy, I don't feel it is the same. In sports like basketball, baseball, football, etc., the "noise" is going on all the time. In golf, it is generally quiet and then you have these idiots yelling out during the golfers down swing.

I think this is a joke, these people should be thrown out immeadiately, and never let back into a PGA event. Even for the fans it has to ruin it. Just like the drunk at the baseball game yelling random swears and such, you don't want the same thing at a golf match/tournament.

Did anyone hear that guy yell out "Come on.. TERRIBLE read." on the CBS coverage of the AT&T; National on what I think was the 15th hole or so on Sunday after Tiger woods putt?

I did, but I just kind of shrugged it off thinking I misheard the fan. It wasn't a good read, really, but it was very rude of the man to yell it.

I'd bet money that Tiger didn't hear it, though.

I'm of the mind that things have gotten worse. I remember watching the sitcoms from the 80s and thinking as a kid 'aw crap' when they announced 'Tonight, on a very special...' Those shows were so tame they had to special case the sensitive issues. 25 years later there's no way anyone would blink an eye at some of the stuff they would previously exercise restraint for when putting on TV. But it's been a slow decline. Older folks generally have a better perspective for evaluating it than the youngn's. But one thing young people do have is confidence that they are absolutely right and there's no way anyone could tell them otherwise; especially not some old dude. I mean those people can't even touch their toes. How are they qualified to instruct us in how to reason about things

I'm 22 years old, so don't think it's an older person forming this generalization. I'm appalled at some of the things people my age say. I can take a joke but some of the things people say to their parents and in public makes me sick.

... and put on a watch list so they can't come back in under two years. As to banning alcohol, it's a very bad idea IMO. They have banned alcohol on the beaches of the city I live in because the police don't have the ability to deal with the yahoos apparently. This says as much about the incompetence of the local police, and about our feeble law enforcement here in sunny SD, as it does about the yobbos that cause the trouble. It is now not legal to enjoy a glass of wine (in a plastic glass) while watching the sun set over the Pacific - in the so-called Land of the Free. GMAB.

Make it painful enough for these maroons and they won't be doing it again. This is not rocket science.

If people can't stay sober enough to act decent then they should be kicked off the premesis, end of story. Alcohol is not the villian, idiots are.
