I like Tom Watson. Wouldn't mind seeing him win again at Turnberry.

It also appears that if you finish the first round +3 or more you're pretty much out of the tournament - which is shocking at a major, alone the Open Championship.

well the weather's been beautiful, and you get lots of roll on this course if you can just hit the fairway

I would mind. He's old. I dont like old people. They smell funny...

Just kidding!!! Nah, it would be cool, but I'd really be surprised if he held onto the lead for the full 4 days. It sounds like the weather is going to come into play later today and tomorrow morning, and as we all saw in the US Open, that can have a dramatic effect on the outcome, depending on the players tee time. There are a few people I wanna see in contention - TW - no brainer AK - looks like he's in some pain, but he's made a hell of a comeback after he took that 9 at number 2. Paddy - I always pull for Paddy. I dont know why, he just seems like one of the coolest dudes on the face of the earth. Paul Casey - He has started pretty well so far. I think he's at -4 right now. Edit: I completely forgot, I'm also pulling for Duval to make a strong showing, especially after returning to form in the US Open.

I'm cheering for Tiger and Paddy...hopefully one of them can contend up close.

I'm noticing a huge difference in the crowd compared to Bethpage and US events in general. Hate to say it but European crowds tend to have a better audience ettiquette. It might be because golf has deeper roots in Europe than over here.

By the way, I just saw Anthony Kim's scorecard. He recorded a 9 on one of the par 4's. All I have to say is wow. This course must be hard if it gets a player like AK to shoot a 9. I know that if that happened to me, I would definitely not have the mental game to bounce back. I would say it would take me 5 holes before getting my mind on track.

The crowds behavior is a lot better, only thing is there were more people waiting and watching in a down pour compared to the crowwd Im seeing on TBS..
There is no one there..

Bethpage had 3 times the people..

Kinda disappointed that the oldest golf championship has such poor attendance.

who do you think will shoot the low round tomorrow? my bet is on AK.

I'd think AK is a good prediction. He blew up on No. 2, and shot a 9. Yet the next time I saw him, he was only like 3 or 4 over. WTF?! That's one helluva comeback, and if he can keep shooting like that, you'll see him near the top of the leaderboard. That may have been a John Madden, Captain Obvious statement, but I guess I was just really impressed that he collected himself after the blowup, and busted his butt to get back. On top of that, he looked like his neck was bothering him pretty bad. Still, I agree, I think he'll come back strong tomorrow.

I also think TW will almost certainly have to make some kind of run tomorrow. He was hitting the ball nowhere near as well as he had been for the previous few weeks. I do think the weather will play a bigger factor tomorrow though. The announcers said the early groups would most likely see some rain. That could change things up a bit.

Helluva comeback?

He still finished the round 3 over par, which means he only got 2 shots back on holes 3 through 18? Hardly fireworks?

If he'd have finshed the day level or better, then that would have been a good comeback.

Supposed to rain friday, saturday , and sunday so hopefully the rains dont show, which is unlikely. But Tip of the cap to mister watson with his bogey free 5 under par opening round.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
