Wow! Intersting thread and intersting to see how many people (all handicaps) hit 3 wood off the tee...also there are some pretty big hitters on this thread. I consider myself to have decent length as I play my 7 iron 160-165 but I only average 230 with a strong 3+ wood off the tee...yes I can hit it further and have even hit one 280 (down wind with a good roll) but that is not my average.

Anyway I started reading this thread because I have recently changed my swing (Sept) to a pattern that is kind of like the S&T; but also kind of like what Sean Foley teaches...or I should say some version of both...anyway I am crisping my irons like never before and I can hit my strong 3 wood fairly consistent and with decent length...but I cannot hit a driver with any consistency to save my life...so I am thinking about building a 2 wood...by using a strong 3 wood head and install a 44 inch shaft so that maybe i can avg 250 off the tee and stop trying to even hit a driver...does this make any sense?

My 3 wood off the tee is my 225yd guaranteed club....with a little help from the wind - 240....help from wind and downhill fairway - 255 (provided I nail it straight LOL)
I have an TaylorMade R5 draw..and I'm not sure of the loft.

I agree! I also hit my 3-wood more often than my driver and, just as an earlier poster said, my lowest scores have come when my driver was in my bag for the majority of my tee shots.

I use a 15* Cleveland Launcher, R flex (probably should be a stiff flex, but still hitting it well!). Avg distance off the tee is probably 235-250, but I've hit it 265 plus on more than one occasion (wind and downhill landing area present, but also without).

I hit my driver off the tee on most holes at my course.

There is one hole that is drive-able but you have to play a blind shot over some trees, so I normally take the safe option and my 2 wood off the tee.

Also if it's windy I'll just hit a low stinger off the tee with the 2W.
I'm not a massive hitter at my club but still longer than most at around 230 yards off the tee, which is pretty short on this forum.

I also steer clear of my driver when my slice returns to me like the Prodigal Son! I am the proud owner of an old set of Hogan woods that contains, among others, a 1 wood, a 2 1/2 wood, and 7 & 8 woods. I carry the 3 wood and 5 wood in my bag and use them regularly.

i-guy, I would be happy to send you one of my 2 woods, if you want, if you want to cover the shipping cost. LMK!

a 1 wood is another name for a driver.

I've heard of a 2 1/2 wood but haven't seen one. A friend of mine had a 9 wood, I guess these were the old hybrids to replace long irons? you could probably make a full set out of old woods, would be interesting! another friend of mine had a cobra 6/7 iron, don't see the point in it though

I don't hit my 3-wood off the tee much but when I do I get about 230-240 yards out of it.

my 3 wood averages about 240 off the tee, though honestly, i have no idea what degree loft it is. the clubhead doesn't say anywhere, and i've never really cared enough to look it up.

LOL...thanks I need it...LOL I actually started another thread about building a 2 wood and have gotten some intertesting advice...anyone ever heard of BANG golf? They make 11 degree three woods, etc...not sure yet what I am going to do but getting lots of great ideas.

This past season, I changed up when I use a 3W off the tee. It took me a year to figure out how to hit a true jumbo driver, mainly to tee it up high enough, and try to hit the top half of clubface.

Because of increased driver accuracy, I rarely hit a 3W to "play it safe." I usually tee off with 3W if you "run out of fairway" about 220 yds. out. This can be a dogleg, an encroaching hazard, or uneven lies on shorter holes.

I tee up a 3W about 1/4" off ground, and can hit it 210 yds. on a decent strike.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I have a 14.5 degree that I hit 265. I love it and I have "issues" with my driver. I would say that I hit it 75% of the time off of the tee.

    • What brand is it? Are there actually items you can't buy online? If you want the Chinese stuff. I'd look closer to home first, even if they are also made in China. Some of the Temu stuff is stupid cheap and I'm not buying it.
    • For anyone in Europe, it seems they still got grips in stock here:  Puregrips   I may just order some myself. Having used only the Pure Pros I'm tempted to order DTX.
    • Day 323: another light day. Just putted on my mat for a bit. Working on start line and a good stroke.
    • Day 143 - Made some swings working on shallow hands in the backswing, a good weight shift, and more hip turn in the downswing.
    • Day 46: Really struggled today, maybe some fatigue from a long weekend with lots of yard work, family time, and two early rounds of golf. I just could not find the ball at all with full swings. Slow, fast, super slow, medium speed, it didn't matter. I was hitting all sorts of terrible shots; chunks, shanks, tops, pulls, pushes, basically every miss was a possibility. Stopped after about 20 balls and hit the mental reset and changed course to "still head" fundamental practice while making easy swings. Hit the ball well doing this. Stuck with it for about 15 balls, and then did a little pitching and chipping practice.
