With the driver my swing thought is low and slow.

If I up the tempo which is my weakness BAD things happen.
If I keep my take away slow and low and come into it low around my body not over the top I pop them out there nicely.

Just to prove how swings are unique. When I go low, slow and around my body I hook it bad.

My weakness is driver as well and I constantly find myself searching for that consistent swing for my Driver after the 6th hole. For me, I have to swing the club on plane and not tilt to far back.

It happens exactly the same to me.

^^^ Hit the nail on the head. Its such a light weight club compared to its size and length you think you need to rip the %$*@ out of the ball...

But you don't need to!

Well I used to hit my driver fairly well but lately I've almost lost it completely. It's all over the place. I used to hit a nice high draw with it, pretty accurate. Lately a would hook the hell out of it (but occasionally hit a powerfade, go figure). Today it was an embarrassment. I would hit these low stingers that would go ok for 150 yds or so and then it would take the meanest slice I've ever hit in my life. It was just ugly. I was playing from the rough or in the hazard all day long.

I would think it's something specific that I'm doing wrong, but there's such a wide variety of trajectories and directions I hit with from round to round that I find it hard to figure out what is wrong. Maybe I'm overswinging? I don't know.

My guess would be bad timing. Which would cause me to agree that you are probably over-swinging. Most people think that relieving tension only applies to the hands. No no no...

Tension ANYWHERE kills. The only tension you should feel in the swing is in your lats at the top of your swing. Swing FREE and you will swing PURE.

I find when I'm over swinging the ball goes all over the place. Especially those gopher killing stingers you talk about. Today I did my best to keep my driver swing short of parallel, not much but just a little, along with a smooth tempo. The results were amazing, hitting the ball like I was a couple months ago(before I lost it again), except higher and longer.

I hit 5 drives between 250-275 yards. Had a few that were about average(200 yards or so) and 2 not so good swings(one low hook and one slice(both a result of overswing/bad tempo), can't break the habit in one day obviously but I'm estatic about the results so far. Low and slow takeaway, slightly short of parallel backswing, start slow on the downswing, gradually accelerating on the downswing. Never waist your clubhead speed at the start of the downswing, save it until you get below waist height.

The weight may throw you off or the flex. But the driver is hands down the hardest club to hit straight just because its the one everyone tries to crush the ball with and also the least forgiving of all the clubs.. jsut gotta keep practicing with your driver and/or get a lesson or two!

Another thing that helped me was to make sure I kept my hands coming close to me on the downswing. I was slicing my driver and a friend noticed I was coming from the outside. I've heard the phrase before, but had no idea what it felt like. Once you do though, it's easy to identify when you go outside in. I was doing it bigtime too. lol.

    • So no joke, last evening post work nine must have been the craziest side I've ever played: Bogey, double, double, par, birdie, birdie, birdie, double, birdie. Two gimme birdies, one 15 footer and one bonus bomb from prolly 35 feet on no. 9. Full disclosure, it's a super easy course when greens are running at an 8 with easy welcoming pins. Still, a couple of firsts there. Driver freed me up starting the fourth hole. Anyway, driver notes: 1) anti left left hand grip. 2) no structural bind on hands/grip. 3) left shoulder HAS to get up to chin with humerus completely detached from chest and shoulder socket (feel) Big game tomorrow, aiming to break 80.
