Im hitting my driver pretty straight lately, but there is no "pop" on my drives?

It feels like Im just not catching the ball solid?

Posted
I've been through a phase like that recently. I kicked it by focusing on making a smooth, in-tempo swing instead of trying to "hit the ball hard". I found that I often swung beyond my ability when I concerned myself with how far the ball went, and hit much better shots when I just swung the club smoothly.

Yeah it happened to me like a week ago...only for a few days, I've had that stage much much longer.

I usually just have to really hit through it at the range.

Ya it happened to me for a few weeks but right now I'm at my best I've ever been. I've been creeping up on 300 yards lately and I'm only 14. It is pretty scary when you finally swing right and how amazing the results are.

I just ended it. Ironically enough, i was swinging too slowly and my timing was off

Yeah, it generally has to do with timing, at least for me.

My driver has been giving me fits and I almost feel like it is a mental thing between me and the club. I use a Burner 9.5. I can't stay consistent with the stoopid thing. It almost feels like I hit the ball off the toe and the club twists in my hand. But, when I feel this, I quickly return the club to the address position, and everything looks fine. I'll hit my nephew's HiBor 10.5 and I get better distance and am more accurate. Then i'll hit my buddy's Nike Dymo and the same thing happens. I'll go back to the Burner and hit it perfect for three or four holes, then *wham!* the darn thing goes wacky on me. At the range, i can hit it straight fourty times in a row. But on the course it goes ballistic on me again. I "settled" for the club on a trade in (long story) and I have never felt comfortable with it.

I can relate all too well.

Today's round found me making a small grip change...that resulting in more lag and snap thorugh impact. It worked out especially well for my "off the deck 3-wood" shots, hybrids and irons........but created havoc with my driver. I hit a few pop ups added to a couple of smothered hooks. I'd revert back to my normal grip and hit provisionals where needed and they were solid and on target.

It's a strange game sometimes.

Sure has happened to me. 5 years ago I wasn't hitting anything solid, no distance and my woods when hit half way square went way right. I quit for the past five years. Now I gave in and am back and hitting the ball about as good as I ever did, just not very consistent yet. Three rounds so far, 82,82,82. Some birdies but also a bunch of very bad holes.

My advice would be is have someone check your set up. You may be way off someplace.

I am actually going through the same thing right now. The only difference is mine has lost consistency as well. My tee game is throwing my entire game off right now...frustrating.

I'm with Prarie.....probably ball position causing the lack of "pop" on the teeball.

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
