Hello all!

Just turned 21 and would like to try out some drinks. I am not into getting drunk and getting a beer belly or anything. However, I would like to hear some thoughts on some "classy" drinks for after a round or at a nice dinner with the lady. Take it away guys, thanks!

I love good tequila ... so I have a couple of tequila drinks I'll share. I don't know the "official" names of the drinks, so I just ask for them by the ingredients.

1) Tequila & Coke: I don't know the mixture here, but at home I usually make them 1/3 tequila, 2/3 coke.

2) Tequila & Squirt (or any other type of citrus soda): This is actually a type of "lower calorie" margarita. You can even salt the glass if you want, and also make sure to squeeze in a half a lime or more. I HAVE heard of this called a "Paloma" possibly.

Jack and coke or sprite. I've always wanted to try a long island tea myself, sounds really good. Theres also a liquor that is made that tastes just like sweet tea supposedly.
I like pina coloda(sp?) and margaritas too.

I've always been a fan of tonic water, which I've been drinking since I was 3. I used to share vodka tonics with my grandfather: he'd have the vodka and I'd have the tonic. So vodka tonics became a natural drink when I was older (let's pretend I was 21).

I'm also a big fan of sangria. In fact, I'm going for a happy hour later this week with some friends, and I think I'll be sure to get that then.

You can't go wrong with learning about wine.

G2 and water during the round...beer or bloddy mary's at the 19th hole.

What would go good with an Arnold Palmer? I guess it would be similar to a long island iced tea, but, vodka, gin, tequila, and rum is a little much. I'm not much of a liquor drinker anyway.

Hello all!

Hard to beat Beam and a splash of water...but I think you might not have a taste for that right away.

For you I suggest a good ole' gin and tonic after a round or with your lady friend...hard to beat that, especially for refreshment. If you want something a little sweeter, like as a desert drink, I suggest a double Amaretto and Ginger ale w/2 limes.

Yup, that's firefly vodka...that stuff will blow your head off w/o you even knowing...and it tastes just like sweet tea that you get at grandy's LOL.

I'm a bourbon fan myself. You can go super pricey, but my favorite affordable drink is Wild Turkey 101, half a lemon, and maybe two teaspoons of sugar (so just ask for a pinch or two at the bar), on the rocks.

If you wanna go old school with the old-timers at the 19th hole, you can always order something like an old-fashioned (basically what I described above but with bitters instead of lemon juice), and sidecars are good too (brandy based).

I've always enjoyed rum. There is a wide range available and tons of drinks that are derived from rum. In it's basic form, you can put a couple ounces of rum over ice and top with orange or pinnaple juice. You can do the same with 7 up or ginger ale.....or just cola.

Another easy drink to make for your lady friends would be Crown Royal and Coke. Try an ounce or so over ice topped with Coke cola. My wife prefers Diet Coke as do I. The Crown is fairly sweet, anyway.

I've long been a beer man. Real beer, though. Particularly fond of porters and stouts, though pale ales are excellent in the summer. Stone has some pretty interesting brews.

Back when I was being Band Guy... ugh, can't think of much I -didn't- drink back then. My 21st b-day I got a pitcher-sized kamikazee compliments of the club owner (My band had a two-year house gig at this roadhouse-esque biker bar). I don't recommend anything like that. *laugh*

I've developed a fondness for margaritas, particularly the frozen variety (San Antonio Heat). Also have the occasional craving for black or white russians. (Or add coke and have a Colorado Bulldog.)

After a round of golf I love a nice cup of tea...must be a "British" thing.

But a nice Jack & Coke goes down well, and after about 8 or 9 so do I. And boy, does it give you a headache in the morning. I've never drunk a spirit that does that to me quite so badly.
Love a nice Gin 'n Tonic too.

I'm a big fan of sours of various sorts. The thing to remember is to stay as far away from sour mix, either at home or in a bar. That is, unless you really want an over-sweetened glass of corn syrup and artificial color...

To start with, for any real mixing, you need to make some simple syrup. Google for details, but you just boil some sugar and water for a minute, then cool. Start with something like 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water... People use different proportions, and in the end you'll adjust the drink recipes for your personal syrup recipe, so just start with that and experiment later. Store this in the refrigerator, it'll keep almost indefinitely, but hopefully you'll use it up before then.

My generic sour recipe is liquor + citrus juice + simple syrup in about a 4:2:1 ratio. For a typical-sized drink, that'd be 2 shots liquor, 1 of juice, and 1/2 of syrup. Pour these over ice (cracked if you've got it) in a shaker and shake until it's cold, then strain over fresh ice in the serving glass. Garnish and go.

The standard sour in the US is whiskey -- I use either bourbon or canadian whiskey. I wouldn't use anything too expensive because you're not going to appreciate the fine points of a single-barrel craft-distilled bourbon in this drink. I wouldn't use bottom shelf stuff, though. Anyway, the whiskey sour is whiskey + lemon juice. Freshly squeezed if at all possible, but you can get a decent drink out of bottled juice. For a garnish, an orange slice and a cherry, or just the orange slice.

Another nice sour is one popular in Chile and Peru: the Pisco sour. Pisco is a brandy from that area (I won't get into whether its Chilean or Peruvian, this is an ongoing dispute). I know the larger liquor stores around here carry Pisco, but I've never seen it (nor looked for it) elsewhere in the US. It shouldn't be expensive-- in Chile you can buy a bottle of the "good stuff" for less than $10 US, and over here it's usually $15-$16. If you can drum up some key limes, those are the best choice for the citrus, but lime or lemon will also work well. This one isn't usually garnished, though you could sugar the rim of a champagne flute and serve in that. In some areas they also add an egg white to the mix before shaking, this gives a really nice foam on top, but I've never tried it and I'll leave it to you to make your own food safety decisions.

Finally, there was a mention of the "Old Fashioned" and "Sidecar" above. Both great, and both have several variations. The Old Fashioned I make starts with an orange slice, a maraschino cherry, a sugar cube, and a few drops of Angostura bitters in a glass. Using the back of a spoon or some other blunt instrument, "muddle" these (i.e., mash up and mix together) until you've got the sugar dissolved. Then add a few ice cubes, a shot or two of reasonably good bourbon, and a splash of soda water.

For a Sidecar, I keep in my head a 2:1:1 ratio of brandy, lemon juice, and Cointreau, but I seem to recall that some experimentation is necessary to adjust that just to one's taste. There's a lot of interesting reading out there on this drink, as it's one of the oldest cocktail recipes around.

A pirate drinking rum?? That's just crazy!

Since you're 21 you probably won't have the taste for a flavorful spirit just yet so I'd suggest gradually working that way. I love Tequila, scotch, and a good rum from time to time. Pretty much any fine spirit on the rocks is "classy" for the guys. You probably won't have the taste for it but order one every once in a while and sip on it. If you can't stomach a spirit alone try a vodka and cranberry, margarita (you run the risk of as bright green glass of fake stuff coming your way), or vodka and tonic.

Ciroc Vodka on the rocks with an olive and a touch of olive juice. Similar to a martini but not as pretentious.

Also any decent vodka with grapefruit juice, I think it is called a greyhound.

It took me until I was 32 to discover this, but try Crown and ginger ale with a twist of lime on the rocks. Good stuff
