A deep face is the same thing as a tall face.

I love the sound of the Titleist 983E driver I play. It has a slightly open face, very stiff shaft, small clubhead, and super low launch...all reasons I probably shouldn't be using this driver with my low swing speed. (I would like to try one of the 983K as I think they are more forgiving.)

But the sound is so sweet when you catch it right. Definitely muted...more of a thump than a ping . The sound is a huge reason I have stuck with this driver.

I've had a lot of folks ask me what I'm playing after they hear the sound my 905R makes when I tee off - had random partners and groups letting me play though comment on it. I don't hit the ball a mile but it sounds solid.

the titleist 909 series drivers sound and feel great in my opinion.
i think that a deeper face will cause lower launch. I believe that's the difference between the 909 F2 and F3 fairway woods. The F2 has a shallow face with high launch while the 909 F3 has a feep face with mid launch. Not sure this is right...someone else should know better than me.

My non-persimmon favourites are as follows:

whats persimmon and non-persimmon?

LOL...sucks to get old!...

Kinda like trying to explain how rockin' an Atari 2600 was to the X-Box generation! FYI, I really liked the sound of my Speedline, but I think that I might like my HTEC 460 even more. Definitely not a cheesy aluminum sound for sure. Gary

Haha, exactly what I was thinking, and I'm only 32!

I've been hitting a lot of drivers lately as I hunt for a new one, and in terms of sound, the new Titleists have a great sound. A lot more solid and deep than the awful aluminum bat sounds I hear coming off the range. I actually had to move away from one guy in the stall next to me, I thought I would go deaf with the noise coming off his Nike square head. It was so jarring, I couldn't believe someone could hit that.

Yep....some of the original Nike Sumo drivers sounded horrible...they've taken the critisms and improved the sound.

I like the sound of all the Titleist drivers I've owned and demoed. The 905R can be found on ebay for some great buys. This is one sweet 460cc head. I may get shop around for one to keep as a back-up driver.

I actually switched from metal woods to solid block persimmon woods in the mid-90s. I bought one on a whim and it was the first driver I felt in control of since I switched away from maple laminates.

I only switched back to metal woods about 5 or 6 years ago - when my friends finally started to outrive me. Besides, there were very few places that worked on wood woods.

I feel really old when someone on this forum asks, "What is persimmon?"

I gotta go check my gear and make sure the "S" flex means stiff and not senior. Dangitman.....don't want to feel any older.

I may be way off the mark but I play with quite a few guys and have heard just about all the clubs previously mentioned hit. To me nothing has the sound of the Cobra...it is like nothing else. if you listen on a driving range and i have there is nothing close...in my opinion.

I agree they have a very solid "thwack". set up great with a slightly open clubface, and a shallower face (so it's not like you are trying to square up a bale of hay at impact).

Got my Tour Edge at TGW for $84 (used to be $299 like everything else) with free shipping, and I love it (also square or slightly open at address), hit it on the screws and the ball is gone, nice trampoline effect. If i had the money I would buy one of the new Titliest's though..

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
