My wife and I are going on a trip with her family next week to Sandals in Negril, Jamaica. One of the bonus's of Sandal's is free golf, you just have to pay of the caddie. I am hoping to play 3 rounds of golf during my stay (thursday, sat, mon) and was curious how much should I tip the caddie? The caddie charges $19. In america, I would think that a fair tip would be something like $10~$20 making a total caddie cost between $30 and $40 depending on how good he/she is. Is that fair?

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Never played in Jamaica so I don't know. But I know the caddies in SA just wanted Golf (polo) shirts and not money.

Maybe a fat ass joint?

$10 US will be around $700 Jamaican, so don't feel you have to go overboard. We didn't play golf, but we did tip a number of other services. The exchange rate is pretty good. We were in Negril (Rock House on the Cliffs) last May. We exchanged $2000 US at our bank before we left and got $157,000 J.

That's what they are supposed to give you with a big enough tip. Just sayin'. Regardless of the exchange rate, i'd say 10 or 15 dollars would more than cover it. Especially when the charge for a caddy is 19 bucks.

thanks for the heads up - I will play it by ear. It looks like we will be playing at least twice during the six days we are there.

is that 19 USD, or 19 Jamaican dollars??

If its 19 J dollars, I'd give the guys like 300 or 400 J dollars each day, sorry dont know what Jamaican currency is called, hence the J dollars.

FYI Jamacian currency is called ganja.

When I went to Jamacia to play, my dad just bought the caddie a beer everytime the cart lady came by, then tipped a little at the end.

Went to Sandals Ochos Rios in Jamaica on my hneymoon 10 yrs. ago. Having a caddy was great. The caddy seemed happy with the $10 US I tipped him. The caddy for the guy I got paired up with was complaining that he was getting $10 canadian. Besides golf, check out the falls at Ochos Rios. They are pretty cool.

I think you're original idea is about right. When I play during the winter, I tip everyone generously. If the rate is $19, I'd say $10 for an average job and $20 if you feel he worked hard for you. A hat or shirt from your home club is a good gift, in addition to a tip. I always take a bunch of both to give out to all the caddies. The best thing you can give them, imho, is clubs. I gave away almost the whole set on my trip in Dec.

Now that's just plain crazy talk.

My wife and I are staying there this Spring Break. How was the trip?

Enjoyed our trip but it was 10 years ago so I'm sure a lot has changed. Golf course was great & having caddy was nice. Climbing falls at Ochos Rios was also cool. Being our honeymoon we spent a lot of time in our room. Only drawbacks were 2 hr bus ride from airport to resort w/o ac & resort seems to get smaller as the week goes on. Went to Dominican Rep. for 10 yr anniv. & enjoyed it more. Golf was more expensive but trip being only 4 days made us want more. Just sitting around beach or pool drinking some cocktails sounds good to me. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Well, considering I have hundreds of clubs worth thousands of dollars, the good karma from giving away a few hats&shirts;, and a set of cheap irons, a driver & a putter is worth it. I did spend more than $2G on my holiday, so the hundred bucks (at most) that the clubs were worth is peanuts. None of the clubs I'd take on a holiday would be anything I'd be worried about if the airline lost them, so it sure seemed like a generous gift to the guy who carried my bag. I'm making another set of irons to take for one of the other guys who caddies there, when I go in March.

Anyway, sorry it turned into a thread jack!! I still say tip $10 to $20.

    • Better stuff today.  Backswing mapping, watching the club go back to where I want it, pause and feel the position, take it back to address, and repeat while looking at the ball.  Some feels I am playing around with.  1) Feeling like my right hand is pushing out away from me to keep the right arm extended. Really actively resist the momentum of the swing to collapse the right arm. I can't do this early because I will just push my hands outward. It's like A2.5 to A3.5.  2) Feeling a bit less flex in the left wrist at A3. I can't do this much or I will just roll the club inside. I caught myself doing this a few times and stopped.  3) Like above, feeling the overall body position at A3. I ideally want my swing to be A3.5 in length. Downswing, I got to really feel the pause again.  I also was doing some downswings while looking at the club at A3-A4 just to make sure it was going down and not out. I kind-of can hit the ball flush while not even looking at the ball. 🤣 Yea, trying to disconnect the hands down and tilting back to lower the club is difficult.  Also, even if I get my hands down better, I end up hitting straight hooks or flipping straight cuts. The club doesn't come in flush a lot. I definitely feel a flip at the ball the ball most of the time.
    • Day 4 March 15th, 2025 hit about 20 golf balls, a lot of non-hitting practice. Backswing length to A3 feels, downswing stuff.
    • Take this with a grain of salt but, when I see high speed/high leverage freewheeling swings like yours (from your swing video), it makes me think that considering the combo of outward and downward pressure required, you might not be applying sufficient downward pressure through impact. Tendency is more out than down. A good analogy is keeping an inflated ball pushed down underwater in a pool. I think it is the hardest force/pressure component to master.  It's a guess. I also think back pain is a symptom, theoretically speaking.
    • Heron Ridge in Virginia Beach yesterday, hole #7 for those in the area.  Would this box be considered an immovable obstruction with free relief?  (It was in my back swing as the hole was to the left of my ball in the picture.)  You can see that it sits just off the cart path.  How about all the mud and tire tracks?  When I addressed the ball my feet were sinking in wet mud so I took relief for standing water.  Right or wrong?  Thoughts?
