When the river gets up it always amazes me how many kayakers show up to go over the falls and down through the canyon. I did some crazy cliff diving when I was a kid but I would have never went over Desoto in a kayak. The scary part to me is that there is no way to know how many trees (or docks) may have gone over the falls the night before to land on. Kayakers were out in force Tuesday morning.

If I did that, I would definitely break my back.

An ex-colleague did that in high school, and even went to a high school dedicated to kayaking. He told me stories about stuff like this, and my back hurt just listening to it.

When I first started noticing kayakers going by my house toward the river I asked somebody what they do when they get to a falls. I had no idea that it was even possible to go over the falls in a kayak and have much hope of not getting hurt or killed.

I was shocked when the person I asked said "They just go over."

They do, in fact, get hurt and killed doing it. One of the most respected kayakers in the South, who trained other kayakers, was killed a couple of years ago on that river.

I think I'll stick to hiking the banks with my rod and reel. :-D
