is there something wrong about us having to watch ths much coverage of John Daly....how many other players are we seeing who are +4 and lucky to be there.....the golfchannel's bullshit never ends.....

and the answer to the obvious question is "no, i can't just not watch the coverage"

I couldn't help thinking the same thing yesterday. It was almost comical the way they would show him making a double bogey and then cut to some black and white commercial of him playing crappy guitar. If he can't play golf (or guitar) why is he on tv? In all seriousness I hope he gets his game together. Yesterday was painfull to watch. I would really like to see him get a top 10 or something. It sure wont be this week, though. I have to say it's starting to look like he just doesn't have the game anymore.

I bet the folks at the Golf Channel responsible for inking the deal on "Being John Daly" are crapping thier pants right now.

If i were him i'd be shying away from the loud and over-the-top clothes...with a game like he has amongst pro's, i'd be doing what i could to fade into the background. He's merely a shadow of who he used to be, yes he's done alot to change his physical self and try to pull his life together but the man needs to take a life-check and realize what's actually going on. The Golf Channel is in a sense making a mockery of him instead of what appeared to be their initial intention which was to highlight how he's coming around. Perhaps they should've done that AFTER he made a top 10...or AFTER he made a cut, or AFTER he got into a tournament under his own accord instead of sponsor's exemptions...just my 2 cents

I find it hard to feel sorry for him. I used to like him, he can still hit it as far as anyone but he wasted his career all on his own by his "demons" as they're called. He didnt get it then and its probably too late now, he'll be lucky to make a cut in any of the tournaments he's invited to come to. He was an idiot, do you see any players now of his talent, Tiger excluded currently, that did so much to destroy their career due to addictions and such. Golf is the only sport where you can make a comeback in your 40's, all the other major sports you have to retire before that. Maybe by the time he's old enough for the Champions Tour he might be able to compete. Sad thing is, he was a talented player, 2 time major champion, that seems a lifetime ago. He just didnt have the discipline to work out and work on his game to stay competitive, he wasnt that overweight early in his career and then he just let himself go. He took the shortcut with surgery, again no discipline to work out and lose weight. It even shows him smoking on the tv ads, that really helps his stamina and fitness and playing guitar will really get him far. The players that are competitive and consistently do well in tournaments devote their whole life to the sport, John Daly will never do that. He wouldnt do it when he was good because he didnt think he had to and not now because though he might get a top 20 in a few no-name tournaments, he'll never compete in a full field event or even make a cut, let alone a major. Its not unlike other sports, some guy thinks he's so good he doesnt have to try, has some early success and lets the lifestyle ruin him and gets lazy and soon he's no longer able to compete against other who continue to work hard.

I've posted about my feelings on Daly the Trainwreck before. I'm not going to go into it too much in depth again, but the guy is a clown. He is a joke, that just keeps getting worse. And they continue to show more and more of him. There just isn't any more to see about the guy anymore. It's entirely played out. He doesn't have the game to contend again. (mental or shotmaking) I am so sick of seeing those friggin' pants. My 3 yr old asked if he was a clown. I had no choice but to reply, "Yes son, he is a clown".
But hey....let's give the guy another show on TGC!!! Awesome.

He's not "down" - he's constantly drawing attention to himself. I don't think we'd have a thread if John Daly was dressing normally and didn't have a show and was just trying to quietly rebuild his game and his life.

Many a man has been defined by his flaws, but Daly has more than his share of them to be considered merely imperfect. The man is a downward spiral: he eats too much, drinks too much, smokes too much, gambles too much, and sleeps around too much (generally with manipulative women more aware of his demons than he is, and who put him through the wringer financially and emotionally before they walk out the door). There's too much there that needs to be addressed for him to try to get his life on the right track and play golf competitively at the level he aspires to reach again. I want to see him do it, but he's proven his lack of self-control in the past for me to know better.

I tired of the John Daly act a long time ago, but this worn out saga just won't seem to go away. I personally just don't understand those who seem to continually defend or support him, particularly now that he seems to be a walking narcissistic charicature; all he needs is to stick a big red nose on and he'd complete the whole clown image.

I love Torrey Pines and love watching the Tour play at my favorite local course, but I find myself switching channels everytime The Golf Channel decides to obsess on John. One of the things that bothers me the most though is his apparent mental approach at Torrey - he'll play decently to get to the green, but then just seems to check out mentally and act like he doesn't give a damn when he chips or putts. His pre-shot routine is all over the map, and he almost looks like a hacker in how he approaches the short game shots.

There is a strange trait of the general public that both roots for someone to comeback from being down (like Daly) and yet on the on the other hand seems to love to watch the mighty tumble (like Tiger), and what frustrates me is the media's obsession with both. But since the media is purely driven by ratings and thus money. Iin fairness, they are a business and I guess they wouldn't obsess with either if there weren't the legions who wanted to watch. I try to have some self respect and not get sucked into the media hype either way.

I would like for him to get his life in order. He's lost a ton of weight, has a girlfriend that seems to genuinely care about him and knows that this is his last chance. I hope he gets it back together and can become an important player, again. It would be a shame to see someone so talented become completely irrelevant.

It would be a shame, but remember it's all his own doing.As someone else said, he got cocky and lazy, resting on his laurels after his major wins.The top pro's consistently say they have to work as hard as they can to stay at the top of the game and that's one thing he certainly didn't do.Of course, most people could live with 2 majors and a few other wins.Many would consider it a succesful career.But because of Daly's addictions he has little money (A pro selling t-shirts out of the back of his camper is a bit sad) and nothing to show for those wins really.But hey, if he re-commits himself and works hard I wouldn't begrudge him any future success.

Hard to agree that he is close after watching coverage yesterday. When I watch him play it just appears to me that he doesn't give a sh$%. Maybe it is just that he works fast. It just seems as though there is no thought process before the shot. ........."Ah lets just get this round over with so I can go pound some beer......".

I agree with the posts above about the golfchannel coverage. Pure snoozer. The only thing in comparison to the golfchannel's coverage is TNT's coverage of the Open.

I'm afraid I'd argue that he has already become irrelevant. At this point he is not adding anything to the sport of golf other than drawing some hardcore fans to watch what is pretty much a freak show. Don't get me wrong, I do hope that he manages to get his life back together - my humanitarian instincts hate to see someone fail and hope that they'll pull themselves together. But as others have pointed out here, he has had so many repeated opportunities and people trying to help and yet he has continued to dig himself into such a hole that he truly is irrelevant as a positive aspect to the game. I just wish that the media (i.e. TGC) would spare us having to watch this continuing slow motion train wreck and focus on some of the positive personalities in the game.

Between Tiger's meltdown, Daly's clown act, the controversey over grooves and old Ping clubs, and Doug Barron's drug ban (which I suspect is a mistake), all the game of golf needs now is for a player to pull a gun on another player in the locker room and the PGA will start lookinig more like the NBA.

Daly is a sentimental favorite. Everyone would like to see him get his life together and get his game back and anytime Daly is in a tournament, even if he isnt anywhere near being in contention they are going to show him.
Do I think he is deserving of this TV coverage? Nope but those are the reasons why they show him. Its the same with any of the other former greats (Duval comes to mind) who are trying to make a comback.
There is nothing that people like more than seeing a hero who has fallen make a huge comeback.

Is the coverage of Daly a reflection of the focus that TGC and the broadcasters seem to have? That they need a 'star', a single image to zero in on? Something eye-catching?
In the absence of you-know-who it seems they're desperately thrashing around to find something that will hold the attention of the 'new audience', the ones who are drawn by the superstar, not the game.

A need for a rethink - not just among the broadcasters but from the PGA Tour as well, methinks. Both have sold everything on the hook of one player. It's a strategy that has paid off for 10 years but it's very risky. Take that hook away and what do you have left to offer?

It used to be funny when he was still a good player. Seeing him play with his shirt off, meet and greets at the hooters, etc..Now it's just sad...And the one thing that stood out to me during the event at Torrey Pines was the interview in the parking lot. The interviewer said "John, I'm your friend and don't want to see you like this or quit golf". If you were really his "friend", turn the damn camera off and talk to your "friend" on the side. Not on national telivision.
