Why are some people so hostile to square head drivers and woods? I understand that for a low handicapped golfer they dont make much sense due to their lack of workability, but for anyone who isn't lucky enough to shoot a 72 on a bad day, why would you reject a piece of equipment that enables straighter ball flight based on the fact that you dont like the shape or sound?

For me it has a lot to do with confidence over the ball. I just don't feel confident with a square head and that leads to a less consistent swing for me.

To each his own. I have a square driver and I feel more confident with it than my last non square driver. Until that time I regularly teed off with a three wood.

i totally agree, find a head that you feel confident over then get fitted for a shaft. Confidence over the ball is one of the most important things to consider when picking a new club.

I hit one once it wasn't as good as my driver but the shaft when you waggled the club head moved 4 inches roughly so i recon it was the shaft

Depends on your home course too
Course iused to play with i could play with a square driver because its all open wide straight holes for the most part
the course i play now would be a nightmare because there are doglegs at the 270-280 and i'm hittng drives 295-310 and i need something that can move a bit

I have had both square driver and 3W (Callaway FT-IQ and FT-I). I bought these because they are very forgiving and very straight clubs. Even on mis-hits, they like to go straight due to the additional weight at toe and heel that you don't get on a "traditional" shaped driver. The square shape didn't bother me, but I can see where it would bother some. I actually am switching to a non square driver as my game has improved to a point where I want to begin to work the ball of the tee a bit more than the square clubs will allow me to. I am parting ways with both of these Callaways if anyone is interested - both in excellent condition.

I had the Nike SQ squared 3W, and it was a good club, but the shape just made is too hard to hit off the deck. It wasn't a problem of looks, just practicality.

Well my 2 cents....

Personally don't like them at address, but I have no issue using one if it in fact helps me play better. I have played the Nike Sumo and and the Cally Ft-IQ...I didn't like them...nothing to do with head, just the results and feel.

Nike drivers sound like a tin can to me....I don't like the sound....in fact I hate the sound the driver makes, and that alone was enough to turn me away. I do have to say that they are not bad...I had decent results with it, and was able to do some shaping.

Cally's FT-iQ...I just could get anything worth while out of it..maybe I was just me, but I couldn't hit it for anything. That same day I tried Titleist 909 D2, D3 And Comp, a G10, a V2, a Mizuno Mx560 ( I think) and was getting good results form the Titleist and g10, but the V2 and FT-iQ were no good for me, and the Mizuno sounded like the nike, but louder....

All in all it comes down to player preference, I have friends that hate mallet putters because they lok massive and out of place, but for me, they out perform a blade.....
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

I never thought I'd get a driver with a square head. I was a fan of the "traditional" rounded head shape.

I tried the Callaway FTIQ because I was having problems fighting a slice. I hit it so straight, the trajectory was ideal and loved the sound and feel.....so I bought it. It took me about two driving range sessions and I completely forgot it has a square head.

Doesn't take long to adapt to asthetics.

I hit a driver straighter than a 3 wood, i'd prefer a square 3 wood. I know it's wierd by the way... I am working on it. The article about swing path has really helped, but now if it'd just get warm enough to work on it at the range i'd be happy.

. . . hostile to square head drivers and woods. . .

Does a 100% chance of not putting a square driver in bag constitute hostility? They seem fugly and awkward, but if you like them, fill your boots.

I think this post really answers the use of square over traditional drivers. Use it till your gaming much better then move up. I looked at the Nike 5900 square a couple years ago, but like some I just couldn't get over the looks at address.

I have the Callaway FT-iq in my bag now. The driver before this one was the FTi. I love them. They are easy to hit and very forgiving. You can work them however the draw is a harder shot to hit. Callaway improved the look as well as the sound with the FT-iq and the Fubuki shaft is great. It is also longer than the FTi. It did take me a couple of rounds to get used to the look at address but now I don't think twice about it. It helps me find more fairways so I could care less about look or sound.

Well i actully took a Square driver out for a test the other day, (not that im looking to buy a new one, just to see) So here is what i found:

Bit weird and new at setup, not bad though.
Horrible sound!
I could still work the ball quite well.
Launched to high.

So thats just what i think of square drivers, it's not that i don't like them, but im a real traditionalist, so i like stick with what i like the look of + Im quite a good driver of the ball, so ill stick with the norm pear shaped club.

i have gotten used to playing my current driver which is not forgiving and is quite hard to work so as soon as i hit the titleist 909 d2 i had found a driver which outperformed mine in many areas. i have tried a nike square headed driver but i didn't have a change to find the right shaft so i was hitting moonballs with it. for me its about looks as well as workability so i think it's right for me to continue playing with a traditional driver.
i have no problems with people using square drivers, i just haven't had enough opportunities to hit them. as a matter of fact, some pros use them (justin leonard, glover, cink just to name a few)

    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
    • Day 580 - 2026-05-04 Played eight holes. Sometimes golf kicks you in the nuts. 😉
    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
