Does anybody here ever do the Hogan slow motion/concentration drill? Sure don't hear much talk about it. I use it alot over the winter when I can't play and when I'm not playing during the summer. I think it helps alot considering I could only practice once every week or two for a couple hours and I dropped about 17 shots.

It is demonstrated in the video. Do the entire swing slow, from address to finish. I don't do it like he does, but when working on swing changes I always use slow motions to easier find the right positions and feelings. When swinging normal speed, it's easy to do the exact things you are trying work on.

What the slow motion drill on the video does is help you see and feel how the club should trail the body. The slower you swing, the more lag you need to hit the ball somewhere.

Since the 1st time I read Harvey Penick's Red Book I have spent countless hours working on the slow motion drill. Especially since living in Wisconsin I have several months of the year that I'm stuck indoors, it helps with the mechanics and such. When I first read it, I could not see how going through my entire swing in slow motion (VERY SLOW MOTION) over and over again would help anything, but it does.

I think it's a great drill, one of the best.

I was just curious who all used it, sure doesn't seem like many do.

I added some slow-mo drills recently... starting with chipping.

Now, I can tell you I feel like a complete tool making a slow-motion chip, but it HAS seemed to improve my overall contact so far.

Currently in my bag:  Under Revision

they say that doing the slo mo is the equivalent of hitting hundreds of balls on the range, with the added benefit of being able to monitor your positions more accurately than with a full regular swing.

at least thats what they say...

If you dropped 17 shots to get to a 14 and didn't practise much... surely logic dictates that if you doubled your practise you'd very soon be a +3 handicap?

:P If only it worked that way e? *sigh*

No doubt, too bad it don't work that way.

In Five Lessons Hogan says "tension is the key to the whole downswing". "It unwinds the shoulders the arms and the hands in the correct order". "It helps the downswing so much it makes it almost AUTOMATIC".

Tension is created by the hips turning in the downswing against the stretch created at the top of the backswing.

How do you get tension at the top in slow motion ? The swing is dynamic. Learning static positions is pointless. Instead learn to automate the swing and action-reaction will get you into the right positions automatically.

How do you get into the right positions automatically? Do you have knowledge of some secret nobody else got?

Did you read my excerpt from Five Lessons ?

"Tension is the key to the whole downswing". How much simpler can Hogan make it for you ? Add a little stretch at the top then turn the hips to start the downswing thereby increasing that tension. IT AUTOMATES THE ENTIRE DOWNSWING including sequence, lag, secondary axis tilt, weight shift.

IT AUTOMATES THE ENTIRE DOWNSWING including sequence, lag, secondary axis tilt, weight shift.

Turning the hips doesn't automate those things. Pushing the hips forward does, particularly secondary axis tilt and, of course, the weight shift. Lag too.

So Hogan's Five Lessons proves that Hogan's slo-mo drill doesn't work?
