I'm messing around with my diet right now, and a big part of those changes is that I'm eating a lot of nuts right now. In fact, there's a canister of Emerald deluxe mixed nuts sitting next to my keyboard as I'm typing. I notice anytime that I'm eating mixed nuts that by the time I reach the bottom of the can, the only nuts that are left are the ones I don't like.

So, I'm curious of other people's opinions on this matter. When you're snacking on mixed nuts, which nut do you pick out of the can first? Note: I'm not including peanuts as part of this poll, because 1) there are no peanuts in Emerald mixed nuts, and 2) no one buys mixed nuts for peanuts anyway.

Its funny you bring this up. Just the last time I had mixed nuts, I realized I like every nut in there. I don't discriminate anymore.

The best nuts in the can are the walnuts, which I eat last, not first. Basically, I would rather salvage a ho-hum round with birdies on 17 and 18 than get off to a hot start but be disappointed with the rest of the round -- you know, if eating mixed nuts is like a round of golf or anything ...

Since I've been a fitness and nutrition fiend the past 3 months and counting, I can tell you that raw almonds are the best nut there is. Protein and healthy fats are just stuffed into those little nuggets of joy.

Very ab friendly food.

I like the hazelnuts. They're even better when still in the shells. Almonds are a close second. Brazil nuts are kind of cool, but mostly because I marvel at the fact that they're intact after being shelled. When I try to shell my own, I end up picking shreds of them out of the #$@#%@ shell.

My mother likes to buy raw almonds, toast them in an oven (or toaster oven), then as they cool sprinkle them wtih tamari soy sauce. This is darn good. You can buy them pre-packaged like this at some stores, but this way you can always have freshly roasted ones.

The cashew is the king of the mixed nuts.

Cashews are the clear best. They are perfectly salty yet nicely sweet. Peanuts are decent but they don't count, they're legumes. I also like walnuts, and pecans are fairly similar, just a little sweeter. Almonds, decent, not great. Hazelnuts are terrible, and pine nuts might not have been mentioned in the poll, but they are good when toasted, not plain.
