Just watched SOA. I think the ending will not be a happy one. Sad to see Jax going this way. Did anyone catch who played the AB honcho in prison?

Yes, they certainly use a lot of interesting cameos in that show. I read an article yesterday that noted the first porn star to enter the homecoming party for Jax was actually a pretty popular porn star in real life.

Anyone here have any advice on the Roku?  Right now I use chromecast and a Mohu Leaf antenna.  I'm getting a new TV, and thinking about getting the Roku TV.

My understanding is that the Roku is just a more organized way to do what a chromecast does, right?  So you just use the remote to pick the app and watch on the tv, instead of using my phone to stream it?

I finished up the 4th season of Walking Dead last week. Really looking forward to the new season in a few weeks. I also started watching Suits. Loving it so far.

Walking Dead had some really gripping moments this year. I was suprised at the emotional attachment I had to a zombie show. As for Suits, I can't say enough good things about this show. I've been watching a couple episodes per day on Netflix and I just noticed I've already stepped into season 2. Love it, love it, love it.

Is it actually on Netflix?! I could have sworn I checked there and did not see it.

Basically the difference right now is Amazon Instant - Chromecast doesn't have it. But it's supposedly coming soon. Roku also didn't have an official YouTube app but that's been addressed. But yeah, the remote it comes with makes selecting content easier although you can use a smartphone app - typing titles is way easier. I like it for PBS and the news. I don't think I can get some of the PBS content via Chromecast. Like Downton Abbey or Live @. And WSJ and NBC Nightly News and SkyNews you can leave on play all for continuous hands off news. I primarily have it for Amazon though. I dunno about Roku TV though. I prefer the more flexible separate Roku unit and any TV you want option. Also spring for the most expensive one if you but an individual unit - less lag.

Thanks, this is actually a pretty big deal.  The news is one thing I miss the most.  I can stream this story or that story but that's annoying.  I do have prime but have never used Amazon Instant.  I could probably do it on a computer and stream via the chrome browser, but I don't really want to do that.

The Roku TV is sort of middle of the pack when it comes to picture quality, according to cnet, but they love the interface.  I think it has a built-in antenna, too.  I'm not someone that notices much difference from one tv to another so I may give it a try...i don't know.

I use the CC for news - it's not too bad if you subscribe to the news channels like Reuters, Associated Press and some internet only news/cable like ... TYT and the Rubin Report plus there's bits like John Oliver and then do some quick queueing. I can easily queue up 30-60 minutes of news in less than a minute. DIY curation. :-)

Oh and Amazon Instant is just buying/renting any video from Amazon. It's basically a superset of Prime but you pay a la carte. No fee to join, it's just like iTunes. Prime is a subset of Instant - the selection is better than I thought. I recently caught up on The Shield. Just download the Android or iOS app and take a peruse through the catalog. You might be surprised. But basically I'm guessing the money saved in shipping is what appeals to most.

So when you subscribe to say the Reuters channel, it becomes a choice on your left menu in a smartphone app and makes it easier for you to choose from all the most recent vids. Try this. Sign into your YT account on the mobile app, search for Reuters, subscribe to it, play a vid, then tap the three dots thingy on other vids to add to the tv queue.

Amazon recently made Amazon movies and tv available to play on Android finally. Any Android not just Kindle Android. So it bodes well the Amazon vids should be castable to CC soon. The thing about the CC is it can be dodgy in terms of performance. Sometimes it doesn't do things so smoothly. This is less so on a Roku, esp. the faster models.

    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
