I put my bag on a diet. Well, more like liposuction. I took everything out, cleaned it, and then only put back what I really needed. I weighed the stuff I *didn't* return to the bag and it came to six pounds.

Anyone else care to clean up their bag and post the weight savings? My bag feels great now, btw.

I do this a lot because I try and walk as much as I can. You can really lighten the load if you take out all the excess crap. Especially after going to the range all winter.

Six pounds? What in the world do you keep in your bag?

I don't keep anything in my bag that doesn't belong there. I empty out my old balls and toss them in the shag bucket pretty regularly.

I put my bag on a electric trolley (really hilly course) so I don't need to weigh my bag.

6 pounds???
What did you take out???

No one thinks about it much but 10 balls weigh a pound. If you have a habit if picking up a couple of balls a round and don't lose many that can start to add up fast. My son is playing on his middle school golf team this month and they have to walk and carry their bag. I pared him down to just six clubs, tees, glove, and 10 balls.

Get him playing gloveless and hitting off the deck and he'll be fresh as a daisy on 18.

i wish my dad played golf - seems like such a great bonding experience to play together
but anyway, dunno how many balls i carry around but probably adds the most weight for me!
better that than running out of balls, uggh

Golf balls are HEAVY.....got a nice little light carry bag, but it's got tons of pockets.....over time, did the same thing.....keep my regular light weight rain jacket, bug spray, tees, and normal array of stuff.....the other day, my bag just seemed to weigh a TON.....I emptied it, it had about 70 golf balls, I couldn't believe that many fit in such a small carry bag.....took out about 50 balls, made a huge difference....I know I need to dump some clubs, but I'm afraid the one I take out will be the one I needed to break 80

Six balls are plenty. If I lose more than that in 18 holes I shouldn't be out there.

Congatulations on reaching total awesomeness. Other people I've played with should carry > a dozen. Maybe if they did that, they wouldn't need to spend 10 minutes looking for their precious in the long grass.

Funny thing is this time a few years ago I couldn't leave the house without a dozen balls because there was always a chance I'd need at least that many. Lately though, it's rare if I don't finish the round with the ball I started with.

As for reducing the weight of my bag, I went through mine a few months ago and had forgotten about all the needless crap I had put in there. I took out all my rain gear (jacket, pants, and hood to cover my clubs), about a dozen balls I'd found on the course, a collapsible ball retreiver (haven't used it in several years), a huge tube of sun screen, a can of bug spray, and the weight/tool kit for a TaylorMade driver I haven't used in a couple years. The weight savings were enough that I had to adjust the shoulder straps to re-balance the bag on my shoulders.

I keep mine pretty lean
only the essentials - 12 clubs, 10 balls (mostly for putting/chipping practice), handfull of tees, bug spray, sunscreen, light jacket and a few ball markers etc..
already have a light bag, so I dont notice the weight at the end of the day

I should have taken a picture!

For starters, I took out a few DOZEN balls stashed here and there and everywhere. Along with that.... Spike tools (2) and spikes Binoculars A BUNCH of batteries for the rangefinder 1 club I never ever hit Sunscreen (took out 1 left 1) Hand lotion (took out 3 left 1) Loose change in a pouch (ten dollars worth easy) Cell phone power brick Spare set of keys Excess club cleaning gear (left brush) Extra jacket, pants, vest, thermal layer Rain hood Snacks (nuts, dried fruit, energy bars) ...and a bunch of assorted papers, garbage, etc. Mostly, it was the balls.

I carry my bag so I remove any unnecessary items to reduce the weight. I will even carry 1/2 bottle of water to reduce weight knowing where the water is to refill my bottle near the back nine.

My shoulders bug me if I carry too much weight, so I always carry the minimum I can get away with. Usually 11 clubs at most, 8-12 balls, a few dozen tees, a couple lightweight items like a towel and sunglasses case, and the personal effects (wallet, watch, etc) I took off to play.

I just weighed it and it came out to 20lbs exactly, which is quite heavier than I expected. The bag itself is not the most lightweight, but it's only a 10-way bag. I wonder how 20lbs compares to other people's bags once they've been cleaned out.

I have a Sun Mtn. C-130 and put it on a push cart. So it got everthing but the kitchen sink in it. I am afraid to weigh it.

Yeah but now you're going to get sunburned and bitten by bugs!

I've got about 40 practice balls in the bag, otherwise it's a pretty reasonable approximation to what I actually use every round. I ought to get a shag bag or something, more because the bulge from the balls makes it hard to access some of the pockets (er, that's what she said!). But the trunk of my car is already sort of dominated with golf stuff (my shoes, my clubs, and my 3-year-old's cute little clubs) and I already have enough trouble storing that stuff when I actually need to use the trunk.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H
T-Zoid Forged 15° 3W, MX-23 4-PW
Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"
