3 wood broke today...need some advice

I was playing a quick 9 today, and I swing w/ my three wood only to watch as the shaft shattered. The clubs I am using are a Dunlop starter set, which I purhcased new last year this time. I was waiting/ and knew they would start to break once I put more wear and tear on them, but neglected to save up. Now I am pretty short on funds, and only have the following clubs
Driver
5-pw
4 hybrid
Putter

Once again, all of which came in a 70$ starter kit with a bag. Any advice guys, I love playing, and have some assets(video games, etc.) that I could sell (I'm 18). I have a job, but my hours havn't been that good lately, and I have a car payment so.... thanks guys!

Your best bet would probably be finding something cheap on ebay. I bought an Adams 5 wood on there last week for $12 and I love it.

Hang out and wait a bit. Keep an eye on reputable sellers on eBay (and on this site). When the next batch of 3-Woods comes out, you'll be able to get a very good one for cheap. In the meantime, you can have a lot of fun with the clubs you have, and you might become a better player when you have the full bag because of it.

You could also check out a "Play It Again Sports" type place that sells used clubs... also, I once found a golf shop at a local course that had a "consignment" section. I found a Wilson 5 wood that I liked and bought it for $10... LOVED it.

Sounds like a good time to start building a proper (non-starter) set - just go without the 3 wood for now. Like someone already posted - start looking on ebay for something like an Adams or look for a gently used 3-4 year old model 3 wood from one of the bigger manufacturers.

After putting some thought into it, I believe that I will do what Chris recommended and begin building my set, starting with a 3 wood. Any irons that ya'll recommend me look into, I have looked at giga golf before, and believe I will look there again, but any other brands?

I'm going to offer different advice.

Being you're a higher handicapper, you might want to put off getting your dream set. Wait until you shoot in the 90s, which will mean your swing is stabilizing. If your swing varies a lot from day to day, it would be hard to figure out which clubs you need.

Get a reshaft on the 3W, or get a 3W out of the used club bin at Golf Galaxy or similar places. Reason to check used club bin: the manufacturer reps are hitting the stores now, and players are trading in some used but OK clubs for new stuff. You can find some good stuff for not too much $$$.

I like this last bit of advice... I would also reccommend not putting a driver in the bag until you can controll it, while hitting it at least 225. I played with out a driver for the first 10 years I played... I learned to hit a 3 wood like nobody's business. I don't miss fairways with it, and now use it off most tees. I hit it around 275, and when it's in the fairway at 275, you have a great start on any hole. My personal favorite 3 wood to learn on was the Calloway Steelhead plus. it's a 13 degree 3 wood. The toe is slightly closed, which is usually great for beginners, and I bet you can find them these days for less than $30. I would reccommend finding one with a steel shaft, the old steel rifle shafts were great... find that and learn to hit it and your handicap will drop below 20 in 2 months... Focus your efforts on hitting the fairway, and chipping/putting...

Check out www.hirekogolf.com . These are original designs, not cloned clubs. You can buy pre-made clubs (for a real good price) or buy comonents and build your own. They are very high quality clubs. I built my currnet set of irons that I've had for about 3 years, and I have a new driver that I just made for this season.

Calvie, I saw one at my local "Play it again sports" and it was either 34.99 or 39.99. They had a few others but they were not the plus model. Also, what kind of shaft do you think I should look for, it either had a Uniflex, or a regular flex. Do I need stiff or will one of these suffice?

The plus isn't anything more than 2* less loft on the face if i remember correctly... as far as the shaft, people here on these message boards will tell you different things, but a regular should be fine with a nice solid swing... if you get into the 100 MPH driver swing speed you may need to have it checked... but I think the steel shaft should suffice... I guess I am unaware of what shaft I learned on, I think at the time that there was only steel or graphite... so my suspicions is that i learned on a reg flex... I am sure it'll be fine... and don't worry about the Plus, get it and learn to hit it into the fairway each time... you'll become a deadly component of any best ball team!
