updated swing notes

Setup

  1. Straighter legs, Bend at hip, weight is at balls of feet.
  2. Engage legs and core more. Helps with hip turn and using me left leg.
  3. More grip pressure in left hand.

Backswing

  1. Left arm stays closer to body from P1-P2.
  2. Hinge sooner from the wrists.
  3. Arms and hands go straight up from P2-P3, and Feel like club is more vertical at P3.
  4. Keep the width between hands and right shoulder. Straighter right arm.
  5. Shift weight to left foot at P3.

Downswing

  1. Extending left leg initiates hands down.
  2. Start hands down with flexing of left wrist.
  3. Keep on turning right side through impact.

I've been following your swing thread here and reading the notes. It sounds like we are working on many of the same things. Interesting reading through your thread for sure.

So, my league starts next week, and I have a golf trip in two weeks. I am thinking no matter what I do, I will have to do my left leg and downswing turning piece. At least this turning piece helps me negate shanking the shot.

I probably shanked the foam ball about 10x in a row yesterday. Given, I was doing downswing work with not much caring about the body rotation. I was struggling to feel the same thing from two days ago. Where I was able to feel the arm piece and the turning piece working together. Yesterday, my body turn was just destroying my arms down piece.

That said, it’s not like I have a great feel for where the club is in space. Especially with how fast the downswing is. If I do the arms downswing piece with the turn piece better. I just feel those two things. Then after I am going into the finish I am like, "Oh, that was center of the clubface". I am glad the clubface found the ball. Maybe that is normal when you are trying to fix your mechanics. You are so hyper focused on the hitting the swing feel that the feel for the club is just gone.

I’ve watched YouTube videos where they talk about how correct lower-body mechanics give you the feeling of having tons of time in the downswing. I’m like, BS! there is no time. If anything, it feels faster now. 🤣 I do notice that the clubface stays more open past impact, less flippy. Not like I am trying to do that. Actually, with the downswing arm piece, I am trying to feel like I am rolling my wrist (closing the club a bit more).

Setup - Same stuff. Good posture, weight in balls of feet, engage lower body more.

Backswing - Same stuff, hinge fully by P2 by using wrists. LBift left arm straight up to top of backswing. Control swing length, though it is way better. *Always a reminder 😊

Downswing - More of starting the downswing with lower body rotation. Getting the right hip rotating out towards the ball and around me, and the left hip goes back away from the ball and back around me. Straighten left leg as soon as possible. Still a bit of a struggle to do this.  Still the hand path and club going down behind me, feels like the right arm stays really wide and gets wider.

Spoiler

Though, I don't think I have poor hip flexor mobility. I stretch and move the crap out of them almost on a daily basis. It is part of my daily mobility routine for the past year.

This position is kind of wonky looking 🤣

image.png

When I took my swing to that position and feel like I really sink my weight to the outside part of my left heel while extending the left hip more. I felt a big resistance from this area in the leg (sorry that is the right leg, blame Google). I was like, WTF! 🤣

image.png

Yea, more stretching may be needed. I wonder if I am avoiding that movement.

I am terrible at the hip stuff so have no idea how to get it right but you look like you are trying to stall hip slide altogether.

I mean, I do slide my hips like 7 inches towards the target before impact. PGA Tour average is like 3 inches. I’m not Scottie Scheffler who can get away with it. 🤣 He slides a ton.

For me, I have to feel like I basically just turn. Though, I’m probably over exaggerating a bit with that one video because I’m really trying to push off with the left leg which sends the hip backwards. Ideally, I would be able to get my weight over to the outside of my left foot at impact and into the finish. It’s probably OK that I can slide about 7 inches as long as it’s like only three by impact.

Golf practice goal achieved!

I was able to exaggerate the extension of the right wrist, straightening of the right arm down to the right pocket move at decent speed, and I repeated it 😊

The direction of the club head felt totally different, which is good. Way more behind and underneath the hands, and it still hit the ball solid.

I was hoping to find an image of my Edel Putter in my swing thread here. I found the video of the 1st tee shot at Moon Valley from 2015.

Whooo man, that backswing, 🤣

image.png

Man, I had faster hips and more mobile hips back then. I could get the hips open prior to impact.

Played 9 holes tonight. Driver is hit or miss, but I haven’t practiced that at all. It was a struggle to get sequencing down for the arms and lower body. I definitely have to do my downswing wrist piece a lot or I just push the crap out of the ball. Pitching needs some work. Chipping was good, chipped in twice. Putting was fine.

First round at Quail Ridge: 47 + 47 = 94

*Note: It was 25+ mph winds with gust in the 35+ mph. It was also around 58 degrees. I felt like I was out in Oregon. The greens were very firm.

Driver was decent. It didn't cause me an issues.

Irons were the biggest issue. Just low point control was lacking. Mostly on the chunky side. Also, my irons were routinely 20-30 yards shorter than normal. Even on holes with a cross wind, the ball was just dying. We played an extra 9 holes after the first 18, and the wind died down by then. I stepped into a 9 iron, and it came up 15 yards short. I have no clue what is going on. I should not be hitting 9 irons 140 yards when I am hitting my driver 300 to 310 yards.

Warmup didn't give me much confidence. I just kept shanking every other iron shot. I didn't shank an iron during the round. I just felt all out of sorts today. Coordinate felt off.

yea, I have no idea if I am purposely slowing down my swing to feel my downswing piece. Again, I hit a decent 9 iron and lost 15 yards of carry. I hope this is just an off day.

Played Mid Pines today.
IMG_5541.jpeg

driver went from a weapon to snap hooks. I know I was right side bending a ton. 😞

Irons is a hit or miss. Even the hit is still with no pop to it.

1. Slightly fat
2. Feels solid, but high on the clubface and the ball has a weak flight.
3. Actually solid

I hade a great shot where I stripped a 5 iron from the waste area. I hit a 15 yard wide gap in the trees about 150 yards away.

Go to the range somewhere or something and record FO and DL video of driver and 7-iron. Put them in CoachNow, but don't really look at them.

Just document what you've got right now.

So this happened to me last weekend for about half the round until I realized that my rangefinder had switched to meters instead of yards when I had changed the battery that morning and apparently meter was the default unit. I felt like a knucklehead for not picking up on the 'M' next to the number. No joke.

    • Day 43 (20 Apr 26) - Day spent helping with golf team conference tournament, did get in some swings with the Pw after I got home.
    • Day 12, April 20.  I spent the better part of an hour practicing various putting, primarily within 10'.   I finished with a 4' drill, the double around-the-world (eventually).  That is, set down 12 coins around the cup at 4', all face up.  Go around the clock.  Make the putt?  Turn the coin over (if it's heads-up) or pick it up (if tails up).  Count the total putts needed to sink all 24 (two from each station).  I took 48 total putts, not great, even given how bad my putting is, but is a wake-up call.  I hope to add to my schedule a lot more time to practice (period) and also putting.   For context, 37 total putts on this drill is about the 18 handicap baseline, and as someone aiming to get his handicap into the single digits in the coming months, making another 4' putt per round would go a decent way ... or even better, getting my 4' putt average under 65% (the bogey baseline).  It'd be great to even get up to 80% (scratch baseline) of course. Also, to clarify yesterday's comment, when I "went for it in two" on that par-5, the "it" I was going for in two was the green, not the boundary fence, despite where the ball ended up. 😕
    • Day 243 4-20 wrist arch in downswing and some flow drills. Worked on some hip/chest sepeation in backswing. Used mirror and recorded. Foam balls.
    • Yeah, that’s not what is happening here sadly.
    • Day 566 - 2026-04-20 Did some work with my big mirror set out. Hit a pitching wedge for a bunch of balls today, too, because sometimes it's good to switch it up.
