Ugh dood, that sucks royally. I went through a phase of 5-6 years where it happened routinely. Thankfully, I have not experienced for a few years now. Hope it gets better soon.

Physical fitness is as much about prevention as it is about enabling new levels of performance.

In other words, I think your off-season fitness plan will be good for you.

I think the years of horrible posture and lack of exercise has hit me. I’m glad I am like 60-80lbs lighter than I was in college. Yea, not lifting weights or doing any sort of physical activity for weeks on end or only 1-2x a week has caught up to me.

from what I read, the severity of my symptoms means it’s highly reversible with PT.

Not sure it is the same for you but for me it was about restoring my 'S' curve. Have been laying on a rolled towel underneath my lower part of the spine for a few minutes everyday to gently push the curvature back in the spine (skywards if laying on back). Started it a few years ago and has been a great help resetting posture abuse everyday (especially if you are desk hugger like me).

I know you are talking about about a separate plan but FWIW am now regularly carrying my bag with shoulder blades pulled back (it works like one of them posture strap thingy). Walked 27 holes last Friday carrying. Back has never felt stronger after a couple of months of carrying now. Huge change.

Probably. After my chiropractor I can feel my shoulder blades back more, with my lower back feeling more curved.

Little off topic but is/will there be a thread for this? I searched and didn't find one. I currently lift 5-6x a week but it is just standard hypertrophy movements, basically me trying to build more muscle but would be interested in a golf specific one.

I was watching a few youtube channels for helping the back. Like, they denounce good morning lifts, or deadlifts. It is nearly impossible to make it so you maintain the S curve in your lower back for each rep. The amount of stress you put on your lower back, just to exercise your hamstrings and quads do not seem good. You really have to have some crazy good hip mobility to get your hips back far enough to maintain that S curve.

Went up to Golf Evolution today for a lesson. Got on the GEARS system and had a really productive lesson. Got some new stuff to work on, some different ideas and feels. It was really cool to get the direct feedback from the GEARS system. I made some pretty significant changes in the numbers of my swing. Not get too technical in what I was doing.

  1. Worked how my body worked in the backswing. How I shifted away from the target, and how my upper body was tilted at A4 (from the face on view). I was getting too much into my right hip (weight getting too far behind me, into my right heel). My body was tilted too far away from the target at A4.
  2. Worked on my hand route in transition by controlling the path with my right elbow. This helped made the path much more stable. less of a rerouting of the hands and the club.
  3. Worked on how my body turned in the downswing, and getting my sternum more forward at impact, more so, making sure it doesn't stay back.

On a side note, I got a 0.0 measurement on one of my strikes!! Didn't get 0.0, 0.0. I nailed the center of the club face, but like a grove thin (3-4mm). 🙂😉

I also found out that I turn my hips like 60 degrees open. We messed round with restricting the turn, but I got it to like 55 degrees. When compared to my hips at impact, I get a good amount of turn. It isn't like I am not turning my hips, I just have a lot of ground to make up because they are so turned in the backswing. I might do better with a more compact turning feel, but I got plenty to work on before that 😉

My phone backspace refuses to erase the emojis so ignore.

If you don't mind, can you elaborate more on the right elbow stuff?

On another note, how's the back? Must be better.

My hands get depth, and they will reroute over the top a bit. If you see a line showing the downswing, a 2-3 inches maybe towards the ball. My current swing is, hands reroute towards the ball, club wants to kick out towards the ball, but I delay stuff to shallow it (early extension, and tipping back). We are trying to piece together how to reverse that.

" The Feel " for me is at A4, to send my hands like down to my right thigh, by gaining extension in my right elbow.

  • 3 weeks later...

Went out and demo'd a few clubs around some of the golf stores in the area.

I found out that KBS Tour 130g X-stiff is still the best golf shaft for me. I tried out some other ones, just looking to see if something off the shelf or in stock would fit. All of them would be considered stiff flex, but they just produced way to high of ball flight. Like 20-23 degrees of launch, and 40+ yard of peak height. I try out a Titleist MB with KBS Tour X. 17-degrees of launch, 6500 rpm spin, and probably around 33-34 yards of peak height. Yea, somehow that golf shaft just fits really well for me. Which means, my next iron set is going to be back ordered for a long time. KBS is really backlogged right now, sadly. I asked the guy at the store, and he said certain clubs with KBS could be back ordered till 2023.

    • It is a disbarrable offense for a lawyer to lie in a court pleading, so I'm going with what the lawyer said in the suit, not what the LIV PR flack says. Just playing common sense here, but LIV not being able to provide competition for their players is one of the silliest claims yet.  If they want competition, play the tour.  If they're just interested in money play LIV. The PGA pays what it pays based on how much they actually generate, which has absolutely nothing to do with what other sports pay, that generate what they generate.  LIV pays based on how much money the Saudis want to sportswash and has nothing to do with how much LIV generates.  But how strange that a non-competitive league would set itself up against the ultra-competitive PGATour. I had asked about your profession, in a prior message, because I was looking to see if my surmise that it had nothing to do with law or economics was correct.
    • Hang in there, brother. I've been there. We all have. Driver is great at the range, but sucky on the course.  A couple of things. It will come. Keep up your range work and it will transfer. Just know that it will ... eventually. Be patient. Stick to the plan.  Maybe try to hit the driver a little extra in warming up before the round? When doing so, try to find a swing thought that works "that day".  You can always try visualizing the range when on the tee-box. Imagine you are on the range. Really "see" the range. That can also get you thru.  If none of that works, one thing that sometimes works for me is to image the golf ball sitting on the tee is a nail, and nail is just started to be hammered into a baseboard. I'm trying to hammer that nail into a baseboard. But the only hammer I was given is 46" long. Forget all the mechanics and just try hitting the nail on the head.  Lastly, sometimes it only takes one round of hitting it well and suddenly everything kind of "clicks" into place. Sometimes it only takes one shot.
    • I thought Minnie driver was great in GoldenEye!  Oh wait, that's not what you meant.
    • Okay so, I have a few rounds in now and I'm starting to like this thing.  The last time I played I didn't have to do any editing after the round. It was only 9 holes, but I actually tagged everything exactly right and even got the pin placements right. 😄 I only had to go back and change 2 shots to positional shots.  I have 7 rounds in there now, so the data is starting to get interesting. The first thing I've learned (okay, confirmed, because I already knew it) my wedge play is not very good. I was surprised to find that I'm getting up and down only about 20% of the time with my 54 or 60 degree wedge in my hands. Interestingly, when I putt from off the green, I'm getting up and down 73% of the time. (That's with 15 attempts, so that's interesting to me.)  The second thing I learned is I am super-inconsistent off the tee with the driver. Take a look:  There is almost 100 yards difference between my longest drive and my average drive. Which tells me that for every really good drive I hit, there's at least on real stinker.... probably more than one. Some of those have hit trees, but some of them (too many) have been straight up shanks, hosel rockets, tops, flubs, thins, toes, heels, and/or skanks. If I can eliminate the totally sh!tty ones, I think my average would come up closer to my performance average. I'm not good enough at math to calculate my standard deviation, but I bet it's huge.  I did find that I'm just about as likely to miss left of the fairway as I am to miss right of the fairway.  I plan to start to work my practice around the areas that need improvement.  Of course, I'm going to continue to work on my swing in general, as it can still get better. But consistency off the tee and wedge play will have to get a little more attention going forward.
    • Yay, was able to get to the range today!  Half of the bucket (20 balls or so), worked on top of the swing work. Taking club back to A3.5, pausing, then while looking at the ball extending the right elbow without turning, then extending the elbow while turning a bit. After like 4-5 reps, I would paus it at A3.5, and try to extend my right elbow as I hit the ball like 100 yards or so.  Quarter of the bucket, worked on some lower body movement from A4 to A6. Just trying to stay down a bit more as my arms get more around me (right elbow extending). Taking the club to A3.5, pausing, shift pressure under left foot as I bring the hands/arms down by extending right elbow. When I was looking at my left knee, from A4 to A6, as I bring my arms down, my left knee rotates back overtop my left foot, and my knees stay flexed at A6. From A6, I would make a small pump and hit shots like 60 yards or so by bringing my right side through. This got me back to getting my right side through better.  Quarter of a bucket making swings were I focus on manipulating the club path and face a bit. I would think, "lets hit a straight draw/hook". I would try to see what feel would make it do that. If I didn't hit it how I wanted on one shot, I would try to make some slow practice swings through impact to get a better feel and try to see if those feels worked for the next shot. Turns out, I am halfway decent at making the correct change on the next shot. Example, when trying to hit a straight draw/hook I hit a low pull cut. I figured as I closed the face down, I brought the club path left. So, I did a few slow swings from A6 to A7, closing the face but also swinging out. On the next shot I hit a straight hook. After hitting a leftward shot, I would flip to trying to hit a big cut. Also, I really focused on making the same turn through the ball. I really had to focus on manipulating the club with my hands and arms.  To curve left, more of a left hand forward revving feel. It feels like I start revving the left hand over from like A5 through impact.  To curve right, more of right palm staying up more longer. It feels like I am delaying the crap out of the club turning over.
