Much better today. Only one drive hooked. Maintaining the V with the arms and raising them up more worked well.

Distance wedge shots were the biggest issue for me, but I know I need a lot of practice time on that.

What worked well today was left arm depth and maintaining that flying wedge more. Like I said above I had only one drive that hooked. I was pretty pleased with most shots outside of 100 yards. Inside 100 yards was a struggle. I know I need to do a lot of my short game stuff better. Distance wedges are a big hurt for me. Lots of missed opportunities today. After this golf trip there will be a lot of time spent on that part of my game.

I'm going to take a break from this thread. Right now I don't see a point in using it. Lots of work needs to be done. I might update it when things are better.

Come on now!  Take a bit of time out when you can and come back after that and screw technique just swing and hit good shots!

No need to update this thread I agree.  You are good.  Just do it!

Break over :-P. What I meant by this was I wanted to stop using this thread to just complain about my swing. It's a bad habit.

I will be taking a short break from working on stuff to get my back checked out. I'm going to the doctor on Thursday. Last Wednesday when I was warming up I hit a really bad fat shot and my lower back just went tight. It's been bothering me since. The overall pain level is like a 3 out of 10. It gets most uncomfortable when I first stand up. I don't know if it was impacting my swing or not. It didn't hurt to swing, but that could just be that my back didn't let me swing a certain way to protect it.

As for my swing and trying to hit the ball solid again I went to the impact preset drill. More hip bump at address, feel more weight forward, and hit punchy shots, keeping the arms extended more past A7. I worked it back up to more full swing length, but I still kept more hip bump and weight forward feel at setup. This pretty much did away with the fat and thin shots and overall contact was way better.

One thing I did notice, I was gripping the club with the club square or closed at address. Then I would adjust my hands at address to open the club up. I got to get more use to an open clubface.

We covered that, yes… ;-) Start it right enough.

Yep.

I might look into a new way of gripping the club more open. When I try to grip it open, and then address the ball, it's not open. Somewhere my perception is off.

I couldn't stay away from the range on such a nice day :)

Things went pretty well. I took a lot of easy swings because of my back. It held up pretty well. I do like presetting a bit more weight forward at address and feeling like it stays there more in the swing.

Also, I was working on gripping the club more open. It feels strange right now, but the results were good with the ball flight.

Back at the range after a week on the recovery for my back. It went pretty well. Though after a week of prescription pain meds and muscle relaxers the first few swings were an adventure. Talk about a disconnect from the brain and the body.

I hit the irons pretty solid. To help the back I tried to swing as smooth and easy with out being lazy. Which produced good results. ? My thought was left arm depth for the back swing. Them just turn right side through impact. Feeling staying taller through impact. I was worried about what hurt my back a few weeks ago. The head drop back, flip fat shot. Impact felt different in that I felt way more forward at impact than before. Which is probably a good thing since I have a history of stalling my turn rates.

I just wanted to post this because it produced good results. I'll need to get video of it.

The pitching was ok. Still trying to learn to hit the pitches with belly turn, and keep my head from looking up.

The driver was meh, but I think an issue is my alignment. I was putting the ball way too far forward. Also, my perception of ball flight to alignment was off. A few good draws looked like pulls to me. They had little curve and ended up down the target line I was aimed at with alignment sticks.

Looking forward to getting back at it.  ?

I'm looking forward to seeing this swing in action!  And I guess I'm in charge, I can make sure we play together at least once over the weekend.

  • 2 weeks later...

I got out an played 9 holes today. I knew it was going to be an adventure. I still got 1 day left on my prescriptions for my back. Being under the influence of a muscle relaxer really messes with the swing. I almost missed the ball with the first tee shot. It took me 3-4 holes to find the ball consistently. The swing just felt weird.

The good thing is the back feels good :)

I am looking forward to getting back at it. ;)

Good to hear you're feeling better.  I just barely remember my time on muscle relaxers, but I have this vague image of finding just walking on my hind legs to be a challenge.  I can't imagine trying to play golf that way.

I almost missed the ball on my first two tee shots. The first was a lucky heel cut down the middle. The ball was about 15 yards off the ground. The second tee shot was a similar, a heeling pull right into a tree about 80 yards from the tee box.

I proceeded to top the next shot. ?

Shockingly my best shots were my distance wedge shots. ?. No clue how that worked out for me.

    • On my car I got the extended power train warranty. I do read the fine print most of the time. Though at now 37, my eyes aren’t what they were 10 years ago.    The problem with most of these extended warranties on electronics and appliances is you don’t register the warranty with the place you buy the warranty from, which I’ve always found strange. Unless it’s GameStop then you know Alina drops her Switch in the next two years and the screen cracks they’ll replace it. No questions asked.    You buy a slow cooker at Walmart for $50 and the extended warranty is say $6, you have to go through a third party to register your product for the warranty, and it’s pretty damn annoying. Target is the same way. Anything you buy the extended protection on you have to go through a third party.    Why do retailers go through a “broker” for warranties? Because they don’t wanna deal with it? They make me talk to someone from another country, that I can barely understand, when I need my warranty fulfilled.   Sorry for the rant.
    • You may be able to find a regular flex Blueboard on the second hand market. I’m little more than half your age so I swing a shaft that launches pretty low so I don’t have a lot of experience with Regular flex (other than when I try to hit it I miss way to the left).    There are other shafts, such as the newer Ping Alta that I’ve heard good things about. And one that no one talks about. The Jupiter shaft. You can get this shaft for a $100 with a grip and your Ping adapter installed. I was talking to the golf manager at Dick’s Sporting Goods here and he has one in his driver and has nothing but good things to say about it. I thought about getting one for my Paradym Triple Diamond to play it a little shorter, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

    • Meanwhile, another old Tour Edge guy switches to Callaway for this season. I have a different problem, course dependent set-ups. What I’m wondering is if @dragonsmhas the 8 iron set 5-PW, AW, GW or just 5-PW, GW. Because the PW is 42°, AW 47°, and GW 52°. Because that could potentially be a gap there. The 5-iron to 6-iron length jump is 5/8” instead of 1/2” so you should be careful of that.    @WUTiger the problem most people have with 3-woods is they don’t play them far enough back into their stance. And they usually don’t have enough loft and the shaft is too long. So 3HL, 4 or 5-wood is probably better for most golfers. I do the “Frankenwood” approach. I have both the 3+ and 5 woods. I typically will either add two degrees to the 3+ on 6600 yards or longer courses, or take a degree off the 5-wood on shorter courses than 6300 or so, and use the 5-wood shaft for both. I don’t usually find a situation where I need both the 3 and 5 wood on a course. I don’t play from 7000 yards it’s no fun. Edit: I mostly agree with @WUTiger on the gapping, although a lot of the newer even fixed hosel fairway woods are made better than what we had when we were playing the old Exotics XRails.
