If you get bogey on every hole that would be about 90 on a par 72. If you're lucky and get par or better on at least one hole, then you would've broken 90....

Posted
Keep your head down, remember to transfer your weight during the swing, always pick the longer club if you're debating what to hit, practice chipping and putting, and don't let one bad shot drag you down into 2 or 3 bad shots.

For me it comes down to the par 3 and par 5 holes. On par 3s I want to ALWAYS par or better. For par 5s, I don't mind bogeys but realistically, I should par every par 5 if I layup on my 2nd shot. When I go back and look at my round stats it is these 2 hole types where I falter the most. I need to pound it in my head that I can make a GIR on the 3rd shot into the green on a par 5 because, for some reason, I end up pulling my hybrid or 3 wood out on the 2nd shot, when in reality I'd still be 30 yards out if I hit it flush. What's the point?

Any suggestions?

Dont take more than 89 strokes..!!!

just kidding im in the same boat, ive broken 90 twice but would love to make it consistant...i think for me it would be to make par or better on the par 3's and to eliminate those 3 putts, that would surely shave at least 10 strokes of my score resulting in under 90 totals....good luck....

I think ball striking is the biggest key. I dont expect to hit a lot of g.i..r., but if my misses are in chipping distance, even a little longer pitch, then I can make bogeys. Hopefully a few greens hit per round would mean a few pars also. My problems come in when Im 150 out and chunk it 70 yards. Im still not a lock to get it on the green from 80, and this is usually where my doubles come from.

Find the fairway, then find the green, in the least amount of shots. Problem solved.

This is what I would do (mightn't be a good idea).

BE AGGRESSIVE!

Don't lay up on the par 5's, try smash that 3 wood (or driver if you can hit it) down next to the green.
Don't bother hitting a iron off the tee, hit a driver.
Have you got a 60* wedge? they're really helpful.

good luck!

Nothing higher bogey. No big numbers, so that means no doubles, triples. To do that, don't try to hit around trees, course management is a big key. Practice alot of short game, how to get out of bunkers, ect.. Practice lag putting, don't leave your self 4-5 come back putts.

make more pars and less double boogies. The scores starts from the hole backwards, so keep your putts under 36 or two putt every hole and your left with 53 strokes for 18 holes without putting.

The key is putting and chipping around the green in my book.

I disagree. Get the ball on more fairways and less in the trees. Being on the green in two or three shots compared to four or five makes a huge difference. You are also prone to focus more on the putting if you putt for par, rather than double bogey.

+1 on shooting no more than 89 shots!

-Know you r distances with every club.
-Shake off bad shots immediately
-Stay with the same shot routine on every shot
-Practice chipping and putting as if it were a religion

With all due respect... I don't think this is the right way to breaking 90. Shooting low is all about GIRs. It's hard to do that from the woods, lake or rough.

Hitting driver off of the tee and gunning for the green on par 5's is a risky way to play that will often create the big numbers. Want to break 80? Avoid big numbers. Your chance of making pars and bogeys is much greater after a par or a bogey than say a double or a triple. I'd advocate any player looking to seriously lower his score to take the driver out of the bag . Leave it in the basement. Yep, even that new pretty R9. Until you can keep your 3W, hybrid and long irons in play confidently off of the tee, the driver will only be a crutch and distraction. For what it's worth, the course I play is a par 72, 6700 yards with a slope of 72.7 and a rating of 127. It's not terribly easy, it's long and it can be tight off of the tee. I'll hit driver 6-8 times in a round, and rely on my 3, 4, 5 iron and hybrid on quite a few holes. Think about it, would you rather hit from 60 yards in the rough or behind a tree (or worse OB) or from 105 yards in the fairway? Course management and short game is the way to low scores, especially as your game improves. Just my $.02.

Its not about GIR, the last time i shot near 90 was at Firestone North in Akron Ohio, the last time before that has been a few years. But i break 90 with only hitting a handful of greens each round, usually 3-5. THe reason is that i only 3 putt once every few rounds. I can get up and down a few times each round. I don't hit the ball out of bounds, even if there is out of bounds right i will blast it in the left rough if i have an opening to the green. If i know i can't get around a tree i will punch it down the fairway for a wedge. I aim for the fat parts of the greens. If i can't hit an iron into the par 5, i lay up. I can get out of bunkers in one try.

Its these things thats let me get into th 80's, if i do have a good GIR day then i can shoot in the single digits. So its elminating mistakes, not taking big numbers. Understanding some short game basics. Key to not three putting, lag putting. Get that speed control down that you can put every putt 18 inches behind the hole.

1. Keep the ball in play
2. Dont try for the hero shot (take the one extra shot to hit the ball on the green)

Short game. If you have a real good short game, which, by that I mean you are good within 100 yards, you're going to break 90 most of the time....

Unless you have some type of horrific game outside of 100 yards, which I'm sure you don't...

So really breaking 90 is short game.

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
