When I played Ping Eye 2 many years ago the difference in distance between irons was pretty constant.

Today I have gaps of about 15 yds in 8-P and about 11 yds in 4-7

So my average yardages look like :

S - 65 (60 m) ..... 58*
G - 85 (75 m) ..... 52*
P - 105 (95 m)
9 - 120 (108 m) ..... just under 110 m actually
8 - 135 (120 m)
7 - 145 (130 m)
6 - 156 (140 m)
5 - 167 (150 m)
4 - 178 (160 m)

Sorry for the strange values (but we use meters overhere).

Is it common to have slightly larger gaps in the short irons ?

Looks a bit like my distances. Looks like a different shaft would solve that problem(equipment wise). How are your launch angles looking with the longer clubs ? Do you have enough swing spd for using stiff shafts ? Whats you carry with the driver ?

Mine are too low(ball flight, longer clubs) and thus not enough distance. I am going for a new set with NS Pro 95 R shafts which increase my swing spd and some more lessons off course.

Succes

They're pretty big gaps in the wedges....

PW for me goes 100-110m
SW 70-100m
LW >70m

I've got one big gap which is SW-LW but that's because I don't hit my LW that hard.

I have a similar deal, but only with my 3 and 4 iron. My distances have really improves with the new iron, as have my ball flight characteristics. Here are my distances in yards...

Not sure what irons you have, but a majority of club mfgrs only have 3* loft difference between 3i - 4i, and 4i - 5i. For other clubs it's 4* difference, and sometimes up to 5* in stock iron-set wedges. Someone posted the link to PGA Tour distance averages , and it went down to 8 yds. between 3i and 4i.

Also, hitting longer irons requires a certain amount of clubhead speed. Possibly you might add a hybrid, drop the 3i (assuming you can hit a hybrid). That what the hybrid sellers would recommend.

I'd say yes. Here are mine:

I would say this in addition to the fact that people plain out swing slower at wedges than long irons would cause a larger distance gap among wedges then long irons.

I have a weird iron set, loft-wise. These are all give-or-take for high-capper inconsistency. (5 longer some days, 5 shorter some days... Dialing in is a nightmare.)

I agree. My irons are pretty consistently (on good strikes) about 10 yards apart. My wedges are more like 15 or 20.

We're pretty close on the irons (Though my 3 and 4 are hybrids). Just out of curiosity, where's your 3w/Driver hovering? Just curious because I regularly feel like a schmuck busting out a 150 yard nine iron approach to follow up my 220 yard drive, lol.

well i dont have a 3 wood, but i hit my driver from 275 or 280 most of the time. then i can ramp em up and go for 300 if my timing is right and im feeling frisky.

if you hit your 9 iron 150 (without over delofting the clubface) then you should hit your driver at least 250. just make sure you are using the same swing with your driver that you are with your irons. the only difference is that you are standing a bit farther away from the ball (because of the length of the shaft) and you want to hit the ball "on the upswing" (it helps cuz its teed up for ya).

It's a trajectory issue most of the time. I -have- wandered through the 260 range, but most of the time I'm carry+roll closer to 240 because it gets up too far too fast. I've been keeping a suspicious eye on my shaft, but the equipment budget is zero 'til I get my pushes straightened out. What good is another twenty yards into the woods?

looking at gap between clubs

two factors that affect above

1--correct lofts especially forged clubs. Soft forging lofts can vary through the season.

2---shafts when installed were spined or better yet floed. Both affect the individual flex of the shaft. To assure even flex the NBP should be adjusted to the preferred orientation.

You definitely want your set to be pretty evenly spaced. I use a system of distances for each club.

It works like this:

Safe carry/Average carry/Average total/Max total. I have hit them farther than the max total, but those are usually thinned shots.

And each club has a distance for each, a rough estimate.

3 - 200/205/215/230
4 - 190/195/205/215
5 - 180/185/190/205
6 - 170/175/175/190
7 - 160/165/165/180
8 - 150/155/155/165
9 - 140/150/145/160
P - 130/135/130/150
S - 110/115/110/125
L - 90/ 100/ 95/ 105

So, the safe carry is the number I'm most worried about. Unless I badly mishit it, it's the number I know I can clear. If I have to clear water, and the carry is 165, I'll pull a 6 iron. 7 could possibly fall short. At the same time, I need to be careful not to get too carried away and overclub. I often take too much club and overshoot the green. I've so many times had, say, 155 or so to clear water, and 165 to the hole, and pulled a 6 just to be safe, and blew it over the back of the green. At the same time, I've had 160 and mishit a 7 short. It's always a fine balance, and you never know when you're going to mishit it, so I try to take all factors into account to make sure my misses are as playable as possible. The whole idea of golf is miss in the right spot.

well i dk if you are hitting the ball that high then maybe you are flipping but not sure. i guess all i could say is post a vid of your driver and iron swing on here and someone on here can help u out. good luck
