Tiger moving on without a swing coach

Tiger Woods said Wednesday that he has been analyzing his own swing on video since his former coach Hank Haney resigned last month, and that he has no plans to hire a new coach. "That's the great thing about technology," Woods said during a press conference at the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio. "We can use video. That's what I've been doing and been working on it that way." Asked about Haney's resignation in the aftermath of Woods's sex scandals, Woods said, "I understand it; there's a lot going on." Woods's driving accuracy has come under criticism during his years with Haney, but Woods said he became a more consistent ball-striker under Haney and noted that he won at least five tournaments every year since Haney began coaching him in 2004. He also said his pursuit of driving distance led to more missed fairways. "If I bring out my old driver, I'd hit it a lot straighter than I do now because it goes shorter," Woods said. "I've gained the ability to hit the ball probably 20, 30 yards further than I did then, but then also that brings in more trouble. The game has changed so much now that you just have to hit the ball out there." When Woods struggles on the golf course, commentators routinely advise him to just go back to the swing he had when he won the 2000 U.S. Open by 15 strokes. Just one problem. Woods says he can't make that swing anymore. "I don't have the [swing] speed anymore," Woods said. "I'm getting older." The Memorial, which begins Thursday, is the first tournament for Woods since he withdrew from the Players Championship with a sore neck. "I'm good enough to play, definitely," Woods said. "The swelling's gone down and I have my range of motion and I'm able to recover." He said he recently played 54 holes near his home in Isleworth, Fla. Asked why he didn't tell reporters about his neck injury prior to withdrawing, Woods gave a curt response. "You don't need to know," he said. He was out hitting balls an hour on Tuesday, alongside Sean O'Hair, who had his coach, Sean Foley with him. There are lots of things Tiger does not tell us, which we got a good example of last November. He just hit a ball into the left woods on the Skins Game now, he can't go on playing like this without getting help. He may not have the sufficient knowledge of the swing to fix it himself.

Phil blasts it into the woods practically every time he tees it up, is his swing broken? But when Tiger does it his career is over? Tiger will be fine, I'd love to have his "swing problems" and I'm sure he has forgotten more about golf than anyone here knows...

I was at the skins game today. Except for a couple shots, Tiger hit the ball beautifully. His driver swing looked a lot more in tempo to me.

He looked a lot smoother...and trimmer. He's on his way back. Foley will be a part time coach for him. His swing looked very good...it was awful a month ago.

He probably does, but having a new set of eyes evaluate you can often be useful. When you work on your own swing for so many years, it can be hard to see the whole picture.

If that's the case (both bits), that's a major part of the puzzle fixed. He's looked overly bulked for a golfer for a long time and I'm not sure "tempo" is a word associated with him in the recent past, particularly off the tee.

I actually thought his driver swing was pretty good today. He had one snapper, but other than that all of his drivers were pretty good. He didn't seem to be picking the club straight up like he did at Quail Hollow. It was more of a '06ish Tiger takeaway.

I've said the same thing for a while now. Of course, Tiger on his worst day would still handle me quite nicely, but even Tiger himself has said in tournaments that he plays bad in that he siimply cannot take his driving range swing to the course. People who have watched him on the range say he doesn't miss a shot. The only explanation is that he, like all of the rest of us hackers get quicker when the pressue is on. If he could take his driving range game to the course, he'd be a lot better. At times it feels like he swings hard just because that's what he thinks the crowd wants to so see and he likes the "oooohhhhss and aaaahhhhhhs" he gets when he does hit on straight.

I'm still the Tiger fan. I think the Karma is there for him to move on to the only guys serious enough about HIM Plumber and Bennette. You watch the Charlie rose video with them talking about their passion and you feel it. I know always, things happen for a reason and with one tuff lesson after the other, until you learn it. To move him to those guys with such humble passion and a warehouse of knowledge is what I see in the karma for Tiger. If he doesnt move that route-a major mistake. But then, I dont know if those guys would want Tiger. I wouldnt touch him. Very little to gain with someone that has won it all. I think Tiger wants someone out there and I dont believe he is the kind of player that wont let his coach "out there". I think that is rubish to discredit him as everyone wants to bash him. I use to back it up, the Haney factor. Haney quits-saves face. Other pros switch and never allow something like this..tells me Tiger is a man of passion too. I say get off him on that, but I keep seeing it pop up on blogs everywhere.
I found this site after watching reruns on line of Charlie Rose and looking for discussion about these guys. I know about golf and I know more about the human mind and "connection". If Tiger doesnt see it, test it-he isnt the guy I think he is. That team-it is all in the cards. I am thinking he will get out there and get the feel for several and will feel it himself. The Karma is there to turn his world around and it is strange how unrelated things can do that on even other issues aside from golf. That's my vote and I'm sticking to it. Hope this group will at least work together a couple of times let them see if all 3 see it, feel it, get the results. Testing, one, two, three. Here's to the man. Go Tiger! Put the MAN together and the world will work out right!

Whether you love him or hate him there may not be a player in the game today that knows more about the golf swing than Tiger woods. His challenge is that he can't see himself while swinging so he loses that feedback. I'm sure if you put a video of him on screen he could diagnose every issue as good or better than the swing guru's.

I was at the memorial and watch steve video tape his swing. On the range, I don't think he missed a shot. It was impressive. The most effortless looking swing. I didn't follow him on the course, but on the range he was amazing.
