In irons I just went from R/S to R flex and it fits my swingspeed better, also gained about 10 yds with my irons. It doesn't matter me much to be longer with my irons, but I use a driver with a stiff shaft (909 D2) and now I wonder if I would be 10% longer with the driver if it wouldn't be tooooo stiff.

Mostly pro shop tell you to go for a Stiff shafted driver, maybe based on an old myth that S flex Graphite shafts in drivers would match R flex steel shafts in irons.

Is this today a myth from the old days, in other words matches a current Regular flex graphite shaft in a driver the flex in a Regular flex steel shaft in irons ?

If so I might get myself into a Regular flex Driver, maybe one with less than average torque ......

I play a stiff in mine because my swing speed is approx 100MPH. I think a lot of people are too proud to use a regular flex, maybe a macho thing. I actually have both shafts for my R9 and go back and forth just because I can, can't really tell me difference other than the trajectory.

You need to try different shafts and see what works best for your swing. There are too many intangibles too list when it comes to graphite. There is no industry standard as far as stiffness and torques values. In some brands/models of graphite shafts, you might like regular, in others you may like a stiff shaft.

im always stuck between getting a stiff or regualr shaft too.. i have firm flex in the irons (between r and s) but in the driver im stuck. i swing it fluctiating between 92-98 and will only get faster. not to thread jack but anyone recommend what i should do?
what ive been goi by that if its a heavier shaft like mid 60s+ ill go regular but if its a lighter shaft ill do stiff. just because ive heard the heavier the shaft gets will also make it stiffer.

I have had both stiff and regular flex shafted drivers. I perfer the regular flex. It just feels better to me and I feel I can swing easier without giving up distance (Probably not true but the game is between your ears as Bobby said). My driver swing speed is about 100MPH +/- a couple MPH depending upon the day.

Totally agree.

A lot of guys that play stiff really need regular. I guess they think playing stiff helps their penis or something.....

In my experience, I have seen a lot of people hit it long and all over the place who would have benfitted greatly from stiffer shafts.

You should go to a golf shop and test multiple shafts, there computers will help you. The shafts are too different to have a standard. I use S400 in my irons, not because I need a stiffer flex but because i hit the ball very high, so I needed a heavier shaft.

Funny you should start this thread. I'm thinking about doing the same thing. My SS for driver is 98 mph. I've lost about 3-4 mph over the last couple of years. Some of that's probably from getting older and another part is changes to my swing. I'm a much more consistent driver now. With my current stiff driver, I have noticed a lot of pushes. I'm seriously considering changing to a R flex.

For irons, I definitely think I need to change to R. I just hope I get the same distance improvement as you saw. My swing speed with irons is slower than where it probably should be with a 98 mph. Bad part is all of my clubs are less than two years old.

I have "R" flex in everything but my 3W. I'm not going to mess with that because I hit it just fine the way it is. With graphite, stiff in one brand or model is the same as regular in the next, so if I'm happy with it, I'll stay with it. The PX shafts in my irons are 5.0 and seem just right. My driver SS is about 95 mph, but normally pretty smooth when I'm in the groove.

to the OP, i was in the exact same situation. Driver SS ~95-100 mph. As i use an interchangeable shaft driver, i was able to do some "real-time" comparison with the same club/session, and for me the stiff shafts flew lower and tended toward push/slice, while the reg's had better ball flight (comparing the Proforce V2 HL's). I've since switched to the Aldila DVS, still reg flex which "felt" better to me.

As others have said, everyone's swing & prefs are different, and not all reg.'s or stiff's are created equal, so you need to try some for yourself!

I have talked to teaching pros about this, and I hear everything under the sun for what people "on the line" between R and S should do.

In persimmon wood days, pros suggested that "on the line" players have R in woods for extra distance, and S in irons for better control. Now, some say that people with a rhythmic swing (whatever that is) may do better with S in driver and 3i, and R in everything else.

As other fellow posters have suggested, try out both R and S and see which works best.

i hit it very high also, but what swing speed constitutes going to a stiff shaft? My swing speed is 119 and i have a regular shaft in my G2 and a stiff in my 907. And i just feel more comfortable with the G2 in my hand

Well I was at Edwin Watts and the S300 was a little too high the S400 worked my SS is only at 100mph, but i guess the S400 just work with my swing. They really dont feel different from the S300.

There is NO consistency between companies that make graphite shafts and the respective flex of the shafts. The best ways to find out what flex shaft will work for you is; with graphite shafts-get on a launch monitor and see what your numbers are. This in turn will direct you to the correct flex shaft for you. For steel shafts find a golf shop that has a Mizuno shaft optimizer, swing it and then down load the infor and it will direct you to the corrrect flex and will also give 2-4 suggestions on what make of shaft to get.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
