Probably 18. If I make it through an entire round with one ball it gets retired. Usually, if I haven't lost one after 9, I will pull out a new one.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I bought one dozen balls to start last year, and I just recently had to buy more. Should I be losing more balls?

Yes. Now get out there and try harder!

As for myself, I don't tend to go very long without losing a ball. 27 or so holes may be my max. I just remember getting pretty excited once that I was about halfway through my 2nd round with the same ball, at which point I promptly shanked a wedge into the lake, 30 yards to my right. I play so many rounds as a single, and that doesn't help. It's much easier to lose your ball when you're playing by yourself, and you only have one set of eyes on it. I've somehow lost balls that I'm about 80% sure landed in the fairway and at worst rolled into the 1st cut. Brandon

On the subject of using a ball to the fullest, I read a story a few years ago about some USGA official who was playing at Augusta, and he took his ball over to the ball washer on the first tee to clean it off. The Augusta member he was playing with was astonished. He said, "I don't think I've ever seen that ball washer get used."

18 and I only remember this happening a couple of times in many years. I lose too many. And of course, the record would depend on the courses played, I can lose 6-8 in a canyon courses.

I guess 18 for me. I like to start the day with a fresh ball. There have been times that I have played back to back rounds. (most 54 holes in a day) Maybe (I don't recall) I carried a ball over to the next round.

Just wondering what's the most holes you've played with one ball? I have a Wilson Smartcore ball that I have been using for 43 holes now(and yes that's every shot), I hope to hang on to 'er. She's beat up pretty bad, but hanging in there

Who counts? I've had balls which certainly went more than 3 full rounds, but I've never actually tried to track it. The ball I played with yesterday was on its second full 18 hole round, and was not new before the previous one. It's still in the bag for the next one.

Years ago, a couple of companies made a one-piece, solid golf ball. I played two rounds a few days apart at a fairly open public course with the same one-piece ball. Trouble was, it cracked apart about hole 29.

Back then, there was a rule that if your ball fell apart, you got a free drop at the point where the biggest chunk of the ball landed. Not sure if this rule is still on the books.

i don't remember the exact number of holes, but i've had a couple of days where i'd play 36 holes and i'd make it through the biggest part of it on one ball. i'm inclined to say 30-32 holes. i don't play one ball nearly as much now because i'm so much more particular about scuffs and dings than i used to be. nowadays, if i hit a cart path or something and it leaves a mark, i get out a new ball on the next hole.

I played 11 holes with the same ball today, which is good for me. I absolutely fell apart on the back 9 though, 4 balls lost

The rule now is that the stroke is canceled and you drop a fresh ball and rehit without penalty. Rule 5-3.

I just played 34 holes with a Wilson Staff FG tour. This is a very durable tour level ball, it was in the same condition a pro v/B330/tour i etc would be in after about 14 holes. I strongly recommend anyone demo this ball, it has a great feel, good spin and distance and will last 18 holes no problem.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
