I have always been a Cleveland wedge guy. I currently bag CG14s (52,56,60). My PW is 46* and thus I have a 6* gap between PW and 52*. I have been struggling for a month as to what to do. Finally, decided to stick with the CGs and had the 52* bent to 51*. Thought I was all set....until I came across a sweet coupon that basically would get me either a CG15 or Vokey for under $100. I stared at my options for an hour and decided to buy the Vokey 54.11, figuring if I liked it, I would consider going changing me set to 50*,54*, and either 58*or 60*. And I always wanted to try a BV.

Note I hit my wedges as follows:

46* - 135
52* - 115
56* - 98
60* - 78

My first chance to hit the new 54* Vokey came early, faced with 106 to pin. I knocked it stiff and immediately fell in love with it. Had several opportunities throughout the round of around 104 - 108 and hit all but 1 within 12 feet of the flag. I really liked the feel of this club and felt very confident with having a 105 yard go to club. Then.....

At some point during the round I noticed my Pro V1x was getting beaten up pretty good. I was bummed. I have never destroyed a ball with my wedges and my now I was experiencing what I have heard about Vokeys - they beat up balls pretty good.

I can't justify going through several balls per round to bag the Vokey. But love the 54* distance. I am considering turning in the Vokey for either a 54* CG14 or CG15.

Thoughts? Do the Vokey's continue to tear up balls after a while? What to do????

You never had this happen with other wedges? I've never played the vokey's so I can't comment on how much they shred balls

Shredding golf ball on short shots is an interaction between aggressive grooves + ball cover material .

Hit a couple dozen sand shots, maybe, and see if the edges dull a little?

When they dull they're not quite as bad on the ball. Some gooey finnishes don't tear the ball up as bad like the oil can wasn't as bad for me because the face is softer.

The edges will wear in time, which will cause less damage to the ball. Hitting lots of balls on the range might help.

All good wedges shred balls, it's when they don't shred a ball you need to sharpen the grooves or think about replacement

my 52 I've had for over a year still continues to shred my DT solos like its it's job... luckily titleist has a cutproof guarentee where I can send it in and get a free sleeve.

All the wedges I have used have always shred up the ball. I have used Taylormades, the CG's and the Vokeys. I found the CG's did the most Dmg.

But it says that they don't cover scuffing from normal play. Are you saying that you actually the cover of the ball when you strike it? Look at the link, you will know where i'm coming from.

The only wedge I've ever had that "shreds" every ball was my new Vokey (no longer new, and since replaced by an old Mizuno). The only ball I've played (since balata) that was shredded by every club is a Gamer V1.

I have had it with wedges ...... 4 grads in between or must it be 5 or even 6 ....... like I said in another post, golf is no science ...... we aren't either, we are no swing machines, repeating the same 50%, 75% and 95% swings at all time to be able to fine tune our game with these nice series of wedges. Personally I play most of my shot inside 100 yds with an 8 iron, can do about anything with it, mostly better than the guy with options to choose from 48-52-56-60 they just have too many choices ..... my wedges are 46-56-60 ....... 110 yds is my PW (46), 75 yds is a full swing SW (56) and 60 yds is a full LW (60).

Actually most of my inside 100 yds shot are done with anything like a 6 - PW and the 56 and 60 are mostly used as sandwedges only, depending the condition of the sand, the distance to the lip, the height of the lip, the room to work with, etc......

I tossed out the 52* and took an extra 21* Hybrid for ...... not that the hybrid is much longer than my 24* iron, but it is just better in some conditions, like in the rough.

Again ...... there is no need to approach distances with science ......

Have you considered another ball? I use the SM Vokeys with the Titleist NXT tour and they don't shred. I don't get the big spin back, but I can stop the ball dead on one bounce.

I play the Nike VR wedges and had the same problem but have calmed down a bit over time... at first my balls looked like "Wilson" from cast away after full shots. Not too bad anymore...

LOL........... exactly what I do as well. I hit a bucket of balls out of the practice bunker before I take a sharp grooved wedge to the course.

I had some Snake Eyes forged wedges built for me at Golfsmith and they shred the crap out of my balls when hit properly no matter what ball I'm using.

    • You get a penalty stroke because your local committee didn't do their job, they didn't address the specific conditions using the tools available to them within the Rules.  The rulemakers contemplated just this situation, bunkers being so filled with Temporary Water that they're unplayable.  The only way to address it "fairly" is to allow free relief outside the bunker, and they do NOT want to allow that on an everyday basis.  So they write the rules as it is, and allow the Committee to override the normal rule in the rare instance where the bunker really is full.  That's what your "local league" does, they invoke Model Local Rule F-16, which treats flooded bunkers as both GUR and as General Area.  Relief from GUR in the General Area allows relief in the General Area (i.e. outside the re-defined bunker).  Its quite a logical way to approach a relatively rare situation. Separately, consider your concern about temporary Water in the fairway.  I've seen situations in relatively level fairways where the Nearest Point of Complete Relief  from Temporary Water is 30 or 40 yards away, further from the green, even in the rough.
    • There you go, @yungbuck6. Your hips aren’t really shifted forward and your head tips back. The camera angle isn’t good so what looks like hip slide could actually just be extension towards the ball.
    • But there's more to weight shift than just where you finish. How your weight transfers throughout the swing matters too.  But you're saying you can see it better than a device that can measure it? Got it.  Yeah I'm good here, good luck to whoever tries to coach you.
