Why are you hitting a driver on a par 65 course?

Because I can't hit any club far to begin with. My 3 hybrid goes about 150, and that's when I hit it good, which is about 1 out of every 10 tries.

You need to get a few lessons to get the fundamentals drilled in.

There´s a lot to be fixed in your swing.

Sorry dude I know you said you cant afford lessons atm but just save up because if you want to get better then you need instruction, you're scooping, reverse pivoting and Ive never said this before but you hit that drive fat. Get lessons, stick with the game and you,ll improve immensely

Scooping? His hands are more ahead of the ball at impact than most single digit handicaps:

He can become a good golfer, without getting lessons. I got all the way to single digits that way. I have a friend who is well better than scratch who never took a single lesson. All he needs to do is to use his body, not his arms. The body does all the work, the arms merely follow.

I'm no pro, but it looks to me like he just has too much driver for his size / age (too long and too heavy). He's got decent mechanics for a junior, but he can't get that telephone pole back to the ball.

I am a pro, and after watching the swing once or twice, I'd tend to agree. Improperly fitted clubs can lead to a lifetime of problems, and most of them will start with the club rolling away low and well to the inside.

Holy, a rare high handicap problem. Your right elbow is wayyyyyyyyy ahead of your right hip and in fron of your body. Usually for high handicaper it is other way around. Anyways, a very simple thing about golf . The right elbow connect with the right hip at slot and the club should free ride and release from there. What you need to do is connect your elbow and hip when your shaft is pointing toward the target and about waist high.

Tons of ways to fix but the quickest and dirtiest way is simply practicing speeding up your hip so they connect with the elbow at slot. Don't have to swing hard just get the right hip and right elbow connected and you'll be suprised how far the ball goes when you do it right.

I'm actually 20 haha, but I have gotten comments about my driver being too long. I do find myself choking up on it a bit, so I'm assuming everyone is right on that one. How much would a shaft/grip replacement cost?

You can have the shaft cut down for a few bucks, the cost of a grip usually. If it's a regular flex, you could even have it tipped. My thoughts are that because it has so much loft and kick, you're pressing it forward trying to keep it low. Interestingly, that's actually a good thing, as has been pointed out, a forward press is rare among a high handicap. Bottom line, a 20 year old male in good shape with a regular flex 13° driver is not a good fit.

That explains a lot. Thanks. Here's another video from tonight...I had more, but they won't upload for some reason. Anyway:

Just my two cents JJ, so feel free to write it off...

While it's obvious you're busting your ass working on your swing, it's awful hard to have any changes set in when you're posting videos and getting new thoughts to work on every 4 days, IMO. I say this somewhat from past personal experience - I bet you post a video one day, get some feedback, work on it for a few days, and then before the changes have truly set in, you post another video 4 days later because you're so anxious to get good ASAP, from which you get some feedback about something else, and then forget/stop what you were originally working on.

In my experience it takes a couple weeks and/or 5-6 range sessions of focusing on one thing before it "takes," if not more. I signed up for evolvr over a month ago and I'm still working on my first bit of feedback, straightening the legs and tucking the butt, because it still hasn't set in. Been to the range a ton but I don't feel comfortable with it yet.

Of course, to each their own, and whatever works for you, do it. But I'd bet you'd be better off taking a little more time in between posting and just focusing on one or two swing thoughts until you get them right.

I haven't made any alterations since the last video, but after today's trainwreck of a round I needed to ask:

Nearly ALL of the shots I hit are fat, with the exception of maybe 3 or 4 shots per round. Based on my videos, what's causing this and how can I fix it?
Last 5 Rounds: 103 (+38), 124 (+42), 101 (+36), 104 (+39), 109 (+44)

I didn't read through all the replies, but I saw your swing and it's very outside-in and steep. Here's two drills to help you.

1. Line up three balls diagonally one ball apart and focus on hitting the middle ball. This will help you with the feeling of hitting it from the inside -- out vs outside to in.
2. (not really sure how to describe it... try putting a golf bag behind you and making sure you swing parallel to the bag (meaning don't hit it). Place the bag straight behind you and facing away from you ... i'm not sure if you will get what i'm saying but try it out if you understand.

good luck!

Next time you go to hit golf balls do one thing for me, just one thing, on the takeaway do not roll or cock your wrists for the first foot of your swing and post the vid

i stopped most of the shots on the takeaway because ur cocking ur wrists really early and it looks like your whole swing is really stiff.

relax a bit and stop focusing on hitting the ball. just swing the club freely.

  • 1 year later...

After a two year hiatus, I'm back.  I've been (slowly) improving over the past few years, but I've yet to break 100 or develop any consistency.  I was pretty encouraged by today's session, though.  Here are a few different swings I took:

Last 5 Rounds: 103 (+38), 124 (+42), 101 (+36), 104 (+39), 109 (+44)

Here's another one of my driver from yesterday:

Last 5 Rounds: 103 (+38), 124 (+42), 101 (+36), 104 (+39), 109 (+44)

Basically I'm looking to fix these things in particular: -my slice/fade -posture -my outside-in swing -lack of swing speed/distance Any help is greatly appreciated.
