Practicing with blades (MP-60), and use them eventually

Hi,

My handicap is about 18. Currently I am using Mizuno MX-20 irons. They are very forgiving. I have been playing with them for 7 years now. They are still good but suddenly I have the itch to buy some clubs b/c my wife is giving me $500 (out of her bonus) for my birthday to buy clubs.

My current clubs are great but they don't give me much feedback on slight mishits. I am thinking that with blades I have to work on my swing mechanics to hit near the center and that will make me a better golfer. What do you think about the logic? Initially I will practice with the MP-60 but will play with my MX-20 and hope to move to the MP-60 eventually.

I have never play with blades before. I plan to buy a set of MP-60 on ebay and if I don't like it I can always sell it back. I went to Rogers Dunn and They were around $450. I can get them on ebay for about $250.

I went from a 18 to 10 handicap by switching my iron set to blades. You are right in that the blades would force you to make better swings to have good results, and it'll help you in the long run. It took me 3 weeks of practice and tinkering with the swing, before hitting them well consistantly. It's a great feeling hitting a pure iron shot with a blade!

Disclosure: I switched from SGIs to MP-57s when my handicap was in the mid-20s.

There are more recent players' irons than the MP-60s you could look into, but the MP-60 are fantastic clubs. However, at that price, if they fit you and are in reasonable condition , it isn't a bad idea. Especially with Roger Dunn's return policy. I don't even think it would be a bad idea to put some in your bag today, or mix them with the MX series. Maybe get 6-P in a recent players' cavity or muscle back; Mizuno has a ton available (and many of us here can go on at length about them) if you're set on them (and I don't blame you if you are). But the MP-60s you're looking at, again, if they fit you, would be great to throw in.

You might start just hitting some at the range, and eventually put, say, 8-P in the bag and leave ?-7 in the MX series. As you feel your ball striking has improved, the 7 could go in the bag, replacing the 7 from MX, and later the 6.

By the way, if you do this, you won't be the only one mixing MX and MP series. My next set is going to mix MX and MP series (or their equivalents, if I go to another OEM). And last season, Brian Gay won two tournaments on the PGA Tour, one by 5 and another by 10, using a mix of MX and MP series irons, including the MP-60s.

I've been practicing with the 8 and 5 iron of my players irons. I can really tell improvement when I go back to the cavity backs

I use MP57's as a 20 hcap and would say my irons are easily my strongest suit

I still will take my Old Wilson Staff 5 and 7 irons to the range and hit 40-50 balls with them. The reason is the instant feedback on mishits. This allows me to make adjustments as necessary to my swing. However, I still play my 08 Big Bertha's . Just for the fact that they are forgiving and minimize the effects of bad shots. I think it is wonderful that Sean is still hitting that Mac Vip Driver. That stick was the bomb back in the day when I first started playing.

I actually just put it back in the bag on Sunday - got a punch card (10 rounds) at a short course where my PING G10 is too much stick.

I already have the momentus and the medicus. I just don't want to spend another $100 on a practice club. Although I watched the tour striker video and I like it. May be I will buy it next year.

I finally got my MP-60 irons today and I went to the range immediately to try them out.

My first impression is that they seem to be heavier than my MX-20 irons even with the smaller faces. May be because of the sensicore shaft. I lost some distance with the MP-60 irons, may be about 5 yards. The ball flight is also lower with the MP-60. I can tell immediately when I mis hit which was about 50 percent of the time. With my MX-20 irons, these mishits wouldn't be so obvious. When I hit it in the sweet spot with the MP-60 irons, the feel is very nice. I noticed that I have pay extra attention with the contact location on the club face and adjust my aim, stance, and swing accordingly. I was some what care less with the MX-20 irons all these times.
My only regret is that I have made the switch earlier. My handicap has been in the range 12-20 for the last 5 years depending on how much I play. I hope to break in the single digit ranks with better iron play and better short game.

MP-60s are great clubs. Not sure why so many people persist in calling them "blades". They are shallow cavity backs with a fair bit of forgiveness.
