I noticed this past week that Roger Dunn and GolfSmith have both dropped prices on the Nike VR sets - as little as $400 (at either location) for a set of 8 full cavity clubs.

With woods and wedges, I see price drops typically right before the next set comes out. But mid-summer seems a very bizarre time to release a new set of irons - you've missed the memorial day / father's day / beginning of summer rush, and are way too early for the Christmas shoppers.

Any idea why these clubs have dropped in price? The mixed set I was considering from them is now under $500 (6 pieces). Will this force me to rush my decision, as I haven't fully decided which set of irons yet?

And does anyone know what this means for custom orders? Because I wasn't planning on getting these with the stock shafts (although I don't quite know what Nike offers).

Perhaps Nike lowered their msrp and dropped their price to the distributors. Then the distributors are passing along the savings

Yes it is often a good thing to plan next years purchases on what you like this year, because next year it may well be significantly less.

Thanks for the info, all.

whats wrong with your MP-57s?

To answer both: My MP-57s are fantastic and are perfectly good irons. However, my swing speed is much faster than it was when I got them, and I'm very close to achieving my goal of being solidly in S-flex area; I was well into R-flex when I go them. I looked into the costs of re-shafting them, and with the shafts, grips, and labor, it is going to cost me not much less per club than it would to buy new. In fact, one of the sets I'm considering is actually getting another set of MP-57s (mixed with others).

About a month ago, I went to a Nike demo day at Golf Galaxy. I got to test-hit the VR Forged split cavity irons, and they worked pretty well on the launch monitor.

In some kind of a special, they were on sale for $495, if I remember right. But, channeling the good influence of Stretch , I told myself, "I have perfectly good irons already." (I didn't buy any.)

Those split cavities would probably work well for me with a slightly lighter shaft.

Probably means one of two things. Either the clubs are about to be replace with newer versions or Tiger's off course activity has damaged sales of the Tiger designed clubs.

I guess that would make sense, right? The Nike Tour and Nike Tour D balls have been discounted over the past month as well.

To hell with that!! I my inner ho came out and splurged for the VR full cavity. Ordered through Golfsmith, custom specs 5 - AW for $349.00. I figured this price drop wouldn't include custom sets, but to my surprise they did.
