there's a course here that i just simply can Not score well on. every time i play there, i fall completely apart for some reason. it's not like the course is any longer than others than i'm used to, and it's not necessarily any tougher. the only obvious difference is the slope is a little steeper, but that alone still shouldn't account for the scores that i post there. case in point, i shot 75 on my regular course saturday. i went to this particular other course sunday and shot a 93 (8 pars, 3 bogeys, 3 doubles and 4 triples). and it's JUST this course - i can play any other course in the area and shoot between 75 and 85 every time, but the minute i set foot on this particular course, 10 strokes get added to my score. anyone else ever have a problem like this?

Yeah - a course where I was a member too! My index was made up of scores from all over - none from that course. Care to wager how well I did in the Club Championship?

Even the pros face this. On the PGA tour, many tournaments use the same course year after year. Some pros regularly skip certain tournaments because they don't play well on the course.

Sometimes it's not the "psychout" factor. The pros know their games, and certain courses don't fit their playing style. Later in his career, Lee Trevino would skip the Masters because it favored players who could draw the ball.

I do now.

I played a course ( hard course 135/72.3 ) around a month ago and shot a 91 and was like WTF because I just couldn't hit the ball.

Went back on Sunday and didn't feel confident from the first tee box and shot 97....so yeah....

I will keep playing it until I shoot low 80's

This is what I was going to say too. Even on my home course where I've played for 35 years, there are holes which my eye just doesn't like. I have trouble feeling good about my aim or alignment, and that discomfort creeps into my swing. I know of one course which I simply don't like to play, but that's an issue I have with the poor design of several of its holes, not just bad scoring.

I def have holes that have psyched me out. This one hole is a 570 par 5 with water starting @ 200yrds out from center green about 100yrds wide so there is plenty of landing room on other side of water. No matter how I play this hole its almost a promise its gonna be a snowman.

Yeah, it happened to me last year in a golf tournament. The course I was playing I had never played before, and everyone told me it's soooo narrow. I usually hit the ball EXTREMELY straight, well let me tell ya, my nerves REALLY GOT TO ME. I missed almost every fairway and shot 89. I was behind trees ALL day punching out.

There's a course near my house called "The Crossings" and every time I've played it I've swore that I'd never return! I just suck at golf there. On the course I play on Wednesday nights, there are are a couple of holes I just can't seem to play. One's a short dog-leg left where you can't take driver off the tee then you have a downhill second shot over a creek to the short side of the green. The others a somewhat short par 4 that I seem to make difficult every time I play it by pushing my drive right into trouble or the trees. They are the 8th and 9th holes and since we play 9, it's frustrating to have a decent score after 7 only to end up in crapsville. Last week I was 6 over on these 2 holes (4 over on the other 7 holes).

What's in my bag?

I have my nemesis course that has been redesigned. It originally opened and hosted a Tour event and was narrow track carved out of a pine tree forest with serious bunkering and undulating greens. I recently went back after it re-opened after a lengthy foreclosure and subsequent remodel and it still psyched me out. I may have to give it another go because they softened up the greens and bunkers, widened the fairways, and lost a ton of trees to the hurricanes and pine beetles so it has lost a lot of its teeth. I could see the changes, but the flashbacks kept coming back.

I used to get owned by this course I played all the time. I could never break 90. I ended up not playing the course for about a year. I played everywhere else and am a much better golfer now. I decided to go back, and my last 4 rounds have been 79,80,81,82....I know what holes Im going to birdie now lol

Psyched out, no, but I do give certain holes/courses respect and play them more conservatively. There are courses that I don't play well do to the conditions. The word cow pasture comes to mind.

Yes, I have one of those. Glen Eagle in Millinton Tn. I absolutely love this course but it hates me. It's not that hard but I can't do it. I've shot 103, 95 and 97. I should shoot in the upper 80's. It's a great course.

    • I think you're saying it's preposterous to think that the areas on this club are anything like what's shown here: 30mm toward the toe or heel loses only 5% distance? Highly, highly doubtful. So a guy who hits the ball there and normally hits the ball about 250… will hit it instead about 238. By missing the sweet spot by about 1.2 inches? Highly, highly doubtful. Heck, the high heel barely gets into the red, and orange is only "up to" 10%! @M2R, I've never heard of "Ask Golf Nut" but I'm dubious of his claims in the video and really, really dubious of what's on his site: "Why AskGolfNut Is the Most Trusted Data-Driven Golf Resource". Hmmmmmm.
