I don't ground the club at address, I once heard it helps with a smooth takeaway. Nicklaus never grounded his club so it can't be that far off. What do you do, ground your club or hover the clubhead above the ground?

I dont hover the club particularly because i believe it adds just a little tension in my arms before I begin my backswing, but thats just personal preference, I haven't heard if it actually helps or restricts anything.

I use touching the ground as my key to start my take-away. In other words, I waggle, ground the club, waggle, ground the club, waggle... then slowly lower the club. The instant it encounters some resistance (in the rough, that's sometimes not the ground) I start my takeaway.

With the driver I rarely even go that far down.

So, I can't vote. I technically ground the club but I don't really.

i ground it just so i start my swing the same each time. i like to think i bring the club through the same position i start it at.

I ground the club, waggle, ground the club again, then tap it a 3-4 times (up and down) before starting my backswing.

Now that I see it in print, that looks like a pretty silly routine. Oh well.

i've gotten into grounding the club lately. Partially as a relaxation technique, so i'm not so wound up. It gives me a nice pause to keep me on the right track. I find i get ahead of myself if i don't ground it.

I'm terrible, but i have fun.

I think it would be weird not setting it down, I move my feet a lot but I have to get it grounded.

I ground all of my clubs at address aswell. Guess it's because I want to start my swing about where I want to be when hitting the ball or something. Doesnt make sense when im using my driver tho

Has anyone seen Rocky on the Big Break the past couple of weeks? It looks as though he doesn't ground any of his clubs... on any shot... It looks, from the limited shots I've seen him it, pretty cool. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to try.

I'm a grounder as well. I've tried teeing the ball up higher with my driver and hovering but I can't really get that to feel comfortable.

I ground all of my clubs lightly. Otherwise, my forearms seem too tense at the beginning of the swing.

I can't quite answer the question because I ground my irons, but my driver hovers.

I just started hovering my driver as I noticed with my 460 I was hitting it a bit inside lately. Oddly enough I read this advice online (for 460 drivers) and it worked.
So irons=grounded
driver=hovers

Like some others have posted, I prefer to hover my driver but ground all irons - personally, I feel like hovering my driver promotes a slight upswing at impact (which is what you want for distance & carr) while grounding the irons tends to promote a steeper angle at impact producing a good divot and crisp contact... I am a firm believer that there are two different swing - one for drivers (especially the 460cc's & deep faced ones) and one for irons although all the traditional fundamentals apply

I ground the club..then lift the club ever so slightly..then start the backswing. it should be noted that only a fool would follow this style, as I've not broken 100 thus far...

  • 4 weeks later...
I do both, depends on the shot I expect to hit. for me when trying to hit a draw I always keep the club hoovering otherwise I set the club down, not that it always works but I try.

I ground it when possible. Keeping it hovered causes tension in my arms, killing my consistency on tee shots and causing me to top the ball with irons. It's how I got rid of toppers in fact - I started grounding the club at address.
