actually mine comes from a bad drive then playing smartly, id take a wedge and lay up, then miss the green on my next shot, chip on and 3 putt, luckily thats kinda rare at the minute

95% of the time, its me missing a green then all hell breaks loose..

For example, i hit a drive into a green side bunker (short par 4), the bunker is crap, mostly muddy sand. Left two in the bunker, than chipped it to far, and three putted.. once again it takes me 1 hit to get with in 20 yards of the green, than 5-6 more strokes to get it in the hole. My classic blow up hole. I also can't tell you the number of times i have just gotten bogey after going OB on a drive. My bane is the short game.

yesterday my meltdown started with a pushed drive on a short par 4. i missed the fairway by probaby 5 yards and ended up in some semi thick rough. i was left with a 40 yard shot over a 6 or 7 foot deep bunker to a pin tucked into the corner of the green and only about 4 or 5 paces on. so instead of going for the hero shot, i just wanted to pitch it to the center and two putt for my par. smart play right? i thought so, until i sculled it about 20 yards over the green into the woods. 1 chip out of the woods rolling down off the heavily sloping green, one chunked chip, a nice lag and a lip out before i finally tapped in for a nice 7

Interesting thread. I probably experienced all of the above.

But nobody mentioned about rushing through the shots. I am in a league that is notorious for slow play. Last time we played, a lady 4-some had to play through us. That's how slow we play.

When I first joined the league, I got accused for slow play. So if I miss a shot, I tend to rush the next shot without considering all the options. So a bad shot tends to result in another bad shot.

On the other hand, if I play solo with strangers, I tend to relax more and rarely blow up holes.

Hitting it OB. I rarely duff the ball around, I usually at least get the ball on the green, so that's not really my problem. But when I hit my tee shot OB or in the woods or in a hazard I get in trouble.

I am a 9 because I seldom have a 'blow-up hole'.

My ball striking is just OK. I don't hit it that far. I don't hit it high. But I play within myself. I don't take crazy chances. I play smart. And I can chip and putt well enough.

You're the kind of golfer that would be good competition, even if my handicap is slightly lower. That double or triple suddenly looks a lot worse on my card when I know the guy I'm playing against is just going to keep playing it smart.

Ironically, I am the kind of player (though not as good a version of one) that I hate watching on TV!

Today I had 14 pars, 2 doubles, and a tripple. There is more than one way to be a 8 or 9 lol.

This is a good fun thread . I can think of 2 scenarios (which sometimes overlap, sadly)

1) I don't get off the tell well and maybe I take a drop, maybe I don't but either way, I don't get much distance or leave myself a punch out. That takes me from hitting an iron into the green to taking a long hybrid. I love my hybrids but I'd rather take a 7-iron than a 200 yard hybrid anyday

2) I'll have a bad chip (or two) that leaves me with a long/tough first putt leading to a lovely 3 putt.

I'm trying hard to get and stay in the upper 80's. I'm good for about 3 blow up holes a round. That makes scoring a bit tough. Friday, I had 8 bogeys and 1 triple on the front 9. On the back, I had some pars and 2 triples.

One word: Trees.

My home course has a lot of them. Never in the fairway, but I never am there anyways.

I swear our trees are 85% tree instead of 85% air.

The other day a routine par ended up in:
-Drive hits fairway
-9 Iron gets pulled left of green, left myself on the opposite side of the green as the pin, but having to land it short or just on and let it roll downhill
-proceed to hit a short flop...only to leave it super short as rough was thick/tall and ball was sitting up .
-Chip....also short, barely rolls on to green
-3 Putt

Today it was:
-Drive goes waaaaaaaaaay right (rare)
-Too dark to find ball (stroke/distance)
-6 Iron into green goes right (anti-hero shot)
-Chip on
-1 Putt

funny enough my blow-up holes start with an amazing drive. I guess that lets me relax and lose focus a little. I usually end up with a short approach that I will duff short or skull way over the green, a few chips and a 3 putt, Easily a triple, sometimes worse on a par 4

My blowup holes happen when i try to be a hero. Yesterday, i thinned my approach shot from the fairway into a greenside bunker, leaving me a pretty sizable up and down. Instead of just getting the ball out onto the green and making a run at par with putter, i tried to muscle the ball 35 yards to the pin. I caught too much ball, flew over the green, and ended up with a double. I should have done no worse than bogey there.

Usually par 3's. Hit my tee off bad, then miss green second shot, then crappy chip and 2 putt or 3 putt.

Par 4's is usually missing the green ( bunker or rough ) then maybe getting on the green, putt 3 putting

Obviosly with a handycap like mine...(not a handycap, just an estimation), my blow up holes come from a multitude of directions. Sometimes I think I just can't stand success. Just the other day I hit a nice drive right down the middle, and followed it up with a nice fairway wood about 10 yards short on a 440 yard par 4. I then proceed to chunk, chunk, chunk, then 2 putt for a 7. I was just so close to a good hole... then it blows up in my face.
