Par 5's. Most of my birdies as well as the two eagles and one double eagle I've had in 21 years of golf happened on short par 5 holes.

Par 3s, pretty good with my irons. More than a bogey is pretty rare.

I've made more birdies in my life on par 4s, but I also play many more par 4s than 5s. I make more birdies per hole on par 5s. I don't usually go for it in 2 but I usually have a guaranteed wedge into the green, so it's easy to put it close. I rarely birdie par 3s because it's usually along iron into the green.

Very simply the more chances at a great shot the higher the par strokes given.

Par 4s for me.

These days I'm better with my driver than with my irons, so that kind of rules our Par 3s. But, Par 5s offer too many chances for me to make a mistake. So, Par 4s get the nod.

Well, par 3's obviously I tend to take the fewest strokes on. In relation to par it's going to be par 5's and will be for basically everyone. 4.7 avg. so far this year.

I'd have to look at some old cards to be sure, but it's gotta be Par 5s. Seems they usually have a larger landing area than Par 4s, and the extra 50-150 yds in length over the average par 4 are more than offset by the extra shot. I've never eagled a par 4, but I get one every so often on a par 5, and while I probably have more birdies on 4s than 5s (just based on the prevalance of Par 4s) I fully expect to get a par on every Par 5, whereas I'm only "shooting for par" on every Par 4. On short Par 5s a duff or topped shot off the tee just leaves you with a normal length par 4...

5s, 3s, then 4s. Some courses in the area have the back tees on par 4s waaaaay back. Most par of our 5s are reachable in 2 (theoretically at least), and par 3s are hit or miss depending on pin placements.

Usually the 5s. On my home course, I usually get a 5 or 6 on each of them. Except last time I played, for some reason I managed to play them in a total of 9 over. I had four blowup holes and three of them were par-5s.

But usually, I'm very happy when I get to a par-5. I can't reach in two, but I'm very comfortable with hitting three controlled shots for a good chance of GIR. Plus, at this course, if you place your second shot intelligently and well, there's a route to the green for the third shot that never involves the ball being over anything except short grass.

Average Scores (over last 12 months)

Par 3: 3.5
Par 4: 4.7
Par 5: 5.5

Par 4's are a bit tougher for me. I'm actually surprised at my numbers as I thought I would score better (relative to par) on Par 5's.

    • Day 21 - 2026-01-10 More mirror work focused on hip.
    • I appreciate that you have taken the time to come back and update. Based on what was previously discussed I feel like the points were; forged, feel good, price, and possibly players distance. If you like the "looks" of those Maxfli irons and if price is a major point, then going straight to the source, Maltby, might make sense. Specifically, the TS3 iron. I was looking into this myself and found some reviews: Fit2YouGolf, Lets Play Thru, and ELITE FIT GOLF. As per your update I found the Maxfli to be ~$1300 fitted the way I wanted. Where the TS3 with the same fitting and assembled by Golfworks was less than $750. I suppose the downside is to actually hit the iron you will need to get lucky and find someone in your golf circle who will let you hit theirs or order a 6 or 7 iron to test. However, the way I look at that is being equivalent to some fittings. If you like the results and buy, then the fitting is free, otherwise the price of the fitting is a sunk cost. If name brand is important, then I submit for your consideration - THE BEST OVERALL IRON of 2024...... FACT !! 😉 A bit tongue in cheek that but also, I feel some good points were discussed.
