I'll go for anything 225yds and in unless there is a lot of trouble right at the green. If things are open around the green and the worst I'll be in is a greenside bunker, I'll fire a 3wd from 250yds. I think my success rate would be <10%, but as long as I was able to be on the green in regulation I wouldn't consider it too bad.

I can usually get a 3 wood on or around the green from around 250-260

Are you talking carry or carry and role. For me to have a realistic chance at hittting it on I'd say 230. That includes roll. A dead flushed 3W might fly that far, but I'd say an average 3w from the fairway is 220, I thin it usually so I loose a bit.

generally speaking I am going for the green from no further than 200 yards out. That is about the distance of my 5 wood. I will be honest that I probably only land on the green 1 in 5 times with my 5 wood. If I am inside of 150, and have an 8 iron or less, I have much high expectations of my ability and probably hit those greens around 30% of the time.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

3W is a directionally unreliable 250-60, but I love playing that shot despite the odds being against me at my skill level. If I make it on, it feels like found money; if I miss--well, I'm just a hack trying a 3W from the deck, so it's to be expected.

My 20* hybrid is a much more reliable 230ish but not nearly as much fun.

Really depends on the layout of the hole, how the green is protected, etc. Best shot with a fairway wood/hybrid I ever hit was from 245 out with my 16* Baffler DWS-ended up 3 feet from the cup for an easy eagle. It was also a really stupid shot-there was water left and right and entry into the green was narrow. But I got lucky. So depending on the layout, wind, etc., I may or may not go for the green in two when it's about 225-250. Anything beyond 250 and I'm trying to lay up to a safe spot. 205-220 I usually go for it with a 4 iron, 3 iron, or 19*-20* hybrid. Yesterday I dropped one pin high from 215 with a 3 iron, but historically results have been mixed at that distance.

Usually 220-225 is the max for me but only if I don't have to carry a bunker. Monday I used it from 210 all uphill at Oakland Hills #10 and put it to about 8'. I would have to call that a career shot though.

I think a well struck 3 wood from the fairway for me would reach about 220 yards. I'm not really sure if the regular shaft I have hit fitted with suits me very well but I could probably control the shot pretty well.

It depends how big the green is but once I get to 140 yards+ 8i I would expect to land in the fringe a bit more and by the time I get to 190y and my 3 iron I'd say hitting the green is very much 40/60 or lower.

Not a lot of distance but usually a good bit of control.

Problem is how those career shots stick with you-I'll be telling myself for the next 5 rounds "you can make this shot, remember that 3 iron you stuck from 215?" And I'll regret it as I hack my way around the greenside bunkers.

The guys claiming 260+ off the deck with a 3 wood to stick the green is more dumbass than the guys that claim 300 yards off the tee

Totally honest reply; my 3-wood off a fairway goes about 150-175. Off a tee, I can get it about 160-180.

I hear ya. At least I have that to file in the memory bank, and I can tell my grandkids someday how I almost birdied #10 at Oakland Hills. Actually I could have stangled the caddy who said, "This would make a nice birdie on the card." right in the middle of my putting routine, but that is another discussion.

I didn't read a post that claimed that - can you direct me to one?

Honestly, I can only reliably hit a green from under 200 yards. I'd say about 190 or so. If I'm over 215 out from a par 5 I usually lay up. I can hit a 3wood probably 225 (+/- 10 yards) off the deck, but I don't control it very well.

I've only putt for eagle once in my life, and it was when I was 235 yards out from a par 5 and I hit a 3w into the green. It's a shot I would probably rarely play. The par 5 has water that carries all the way up to the hole from about 200 yards and in. I was by myself and having a great round, so I decided to go for it and I hit it. I don't recall going for the green from that distance out since.

If they're claiming they consistently hit and hold the green from 260, then yeah, likely fraudulent. But if they're just saying they go for it, it's plausible. My 3 wood goes a long way off the deck, 260 yds is far from impossible. But hitting it straight from that far way is exceedingly difficult, at least at the level required to hit a green. And it's going to come in really low. So yeah-even for incredibly good golfers it's a super low-percentage shot. I don't doubt that more than a few try it though.

That's a problem I hadn't even thought of-never played with a caddy. But if I did I sure wouldn't appreciate any comments as I'm preparing to putt.

I could be totally wrong, but I think I read something last year that said that PGA golfers stick the green from 200 yds only around 50% of the time, so you and me and the rest of us are in good company. I imagine if I could reliably hit greens from 200 yds I'd only ever need to work on putting to break par.
