I think that Phil's playing schedule, aside from the majors, is basically geared towards "avoid playing anything in which Tiger Woods is playing."

Heck, he's even skipping the Grand Slam of Golf. It's a powderpuff four-man event that serves as a great excuse to take your family to Hawaii. He shot 59 two years ago and, last year, was beat down hard by Tiger.

I seriously think it's become a component of his schedule. I think Phil realizes that Tiger usually beats him, and that doesn't play well for Captain America.

can't blame him. after playing like he did last couple of month I'd be avoiding confrontation with David Duval and Michelle Wie.

I'm not sure if he is avoiding Tiger or not. It does sound like it though. It wouldn't surprise me if Lefty played only the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and the four majors each year. The man isn't feeling the golf game right now.

On a sidenote, I'm a much bigger Mike Weir fan than I am of Phil Mickelson. I would rather watch Weir anyway.

Woods + Ogilvy + Furyk + Weir= One of the best Grand Slams ever.

While I do agree that Philbur is a weasel and may well want to avoid Tiger, don't forget that he plays like a hack from mid-August to December. He cares about nothing but family and cheeseburgers after the PGA.

Your assesment might be correct but we've seen Mickelson give up in the fall before.

I don't think this one THING is an example of him avoiding Tiger. I think it's indicative of an underlying theme, though. Phil plays - except the majors - a lot of pretty weak-field events that, historically, Tiger doesn't play at. The AT&T;, the FBR, the Bellsouth, the International, etc. Tiger isn't at those tournaments, and most of the other big names aren't, either.

Clearly Phil has a good game - you don't win three majors without having a great game (though I could argue that winning two proves nothing, Andy North) - but I wonder how many wins he'd have if he played against better competition more often.

Agreed. Though I'd have rather seen Sergio instead of Weir.

Yeah, but he can't make a putt outside 7 feet unless the event is in Europe or has the word "Ryder" in the name.

I'd rather have seen Luke Donald or Camilo Villegas...better yet, Adam Scott.

Fairways and Greens.
